Chapter 2028: Chapter 2022: Just Being Playful
"Mom, you’re back! Does that mean we can have cake later?" Yu Chen shouted as he saw his mother just entering the door.
"Yes, you little foodie. Play nicely and I’ll make it after I put away these groceries, alright?" Qin Xue looked at her son’s eager face. How did she end up with such a food-loving child? Hopefully no one ever lures him away with just a snack, or she’d really be devastated.
"Yay! Big brother, we’re going to have cake soon, isn’t that exciting?" Yu Chen exclaimed, boasting a little to his brothers.
"Hmm, I’m reading. You guys go ahead and play." Yu Ze flipped through his father’s book page by page and responded without lifting his head.
"I’m also reading. I don’t want to play." Cohen, holding a book himself, saw that even Yu Ze, who’s younger, was diligently reading and studying; as the eldest brother, he couldn’t fall behind his younger brother, could he?
"Okay then, if you’re not playing with me, I’ll read too." Yu Chen said, though his "book" was a little picture book Qin Xue made for him. It had drawings of fruits, animals, and Chinese characters with English. Qin Xue would teach him to read and recognize words after dinner, so he knew quite a few characters by now.
Seeing his two brothers so focused, he didn’t want to lag behind. He wanted to be a good child, to be great.
After putting away the groceries, Qin Xue made steamed cakes for the kids first, then cooked dinner. She had bought extra ingredients knowing Chu Molin would return, wanting him to have something nice to eat too.
When Chu Molin came home, the first thing he saw was the three kids sitting at the stone table in the courtyard, reading. On the other side, Xue Ling was occupied with her own things. They weren’t disturbing each other, but where had his wife gone?
Not seeing his wife’s figure, Chu Molin glanced around without spotting her. Could she have gone out again? She’d been incredibly busy lately; he wondered if her body could handle it.
Just as Chu Molin was about to ask the kids where Qin Xue was, he saw someone coming out of the kitchen. Wasn’t this his wife, whom he thought had gone out?
"You’re back. Why aren’t you coming inside?" Qin Xue asked as she stepped out, spotting Chu Molin standing at the door, unmoving.
"I just got back too and was about to ask where you’ve been. What’s on the menu today?" Chu Molin asked Qin Xue.
"See for yourself." Qin Xue placed the dishes in her hands in front of Chu Molin for him to look at.
"My wife is the best. You always know how to make my favorite dishes. It’s good to be home." Chu Molin looked at the food his wife made, feeling soft-hearted and completely charmed.
"Heh, quit it, get in and wash your hands for dinner." Qin Xue gave him a playful glare. Honestly, he acted like a different person as soon as he got home.
"Yes, ma’am." Chu Molin said, smiling at Qin Xue.
"You cheeky thing. I wonder how your colleagues would see you if they saw you like this." Qin Xue thought that Chu Molin acted completely differently when he was with her, but she loved this side of him—it made her feel cherished.
Such a family was the softest spot in Qin Xue’s heart. As long as she could keep the family happy and cheerful, that was her greatest pursuit in life.
"Mom, why can’t Dad’s colleagues see him like this?" Cohen asked Qin Xue first.
"Ask your dad." Qin Xue glanced at the gently smiling man, letting him explain however he wanted.
"Dad, why is that?" Cohen looked towards his father, hoping he could clear up his confusion.
