The air inside the spire wasn't just thick—it was alive. Heavy, violet-hued mana clung to the ancient stone walls like velvet mist, pulsing in time with the rhythmic thrum deep within the floorboards.

Mei moved ahead like a shadow detached from its body, her twin daggers drawn in a tight reverse grip. Every instinct honed over three lives screamed that this chamber was a kill box.

"High-concentration mana rot in the air," Mei warned, her voice barely a whisper, yet carrying with absolute authority. "Don't break seal on your breathers."

Behind her, Shane, Elias, and Joshua moved in a tight wedge.

"The core is right through those roots," Joshua whispered, pointing his rifle toward a massive archway woven from petrified bark and glowing veins of crystal. "Readings are off the chart. It’s an Overlord-class."

Before the last word left his mouth, the ground dissolved beneath them.

Thick, thorny vines exploded from the stone floor like striking serpents, snapping toward Elias's boots.

"Up!" Mei snapped.

She didn't retreat. She lunged forward, blade flashing in a razor-sharp arc that sheared through three thick vines in a single fluid stroke. Black, caustic sap sprayed across the stone, sizzling violently where it landed.

From the center of the archway, the Overlord descended.

It was a nightmare of twisted wood and crystalline armor—a towering, four-armed guardian with a glowing violet core pulsing in its hollow chest. It let out an ear-splitting shriek that sent shockwaves through the air, cracking the stone walls.

"Elias, take the front swing! Joshua, suppress the upper limbs!" Shane ordered, drawing his broadsword.

"Too slow!" Mei cut in, her tone sharp as a razor. "It’s gathering ambient mana for a sweep attack—cover!"

The Overlord raised all four arms, a ball of concentrated violet energy gathering at its center.

Elias slammed his tower shield into the ground, locking it with a heavy CLACK. Shane stepped behind him, bracing his shoulder against the shield frame.

BOOM.

A wave of raw, kinetic mana slammed into Elias’s barrier. The kinetic dampeners shrieked, sparks flying from the frame as the sheer force pushed both men back three inches into the stone.

"Mei!" Shane roared through the smoke.

She was already mid-air.

Using the creature's own energy wave as a springboard, Mei vaulted high into the vault ceiling, running along the moss-covered walls with terrifying speed. She didn't feel fear; she felt the absolute, icy clarity of a predator in her element.

The Overlord swung two massive wooden limbs upward to crush her against the stone.

Fsssh-SHHK.

Mei threw her body into a horizontal spin, slicing through the creature’s wrists before the blow could connect. Splintered wood rained down as she landed squarely on the monster's shoulders.

Without a millisecond of hesitation, she inverted her right dagger and slammed it straight down through the creature's collarbone, pinning herself to its frame. With her left hand, she unclipped her last heavy-impact spike.

"Joshua! Eye level!" she barked.

Joshua fired a high-caliber tracer round straight at the Overlord’s face. The creature flinched back, its defensive posture breaking for a fraction of a second—revealing the exposed violet core in its chest.

Mei drove her heel into the creature's neck, using the momentum to swing downward along its front chest, and rammed the heavy spike directly into the glowing core stone.

"Elias! Impact!" she screamed.

Elias sprinted forward, using his massive shield as a battering ram to slam directly into the spike Mei had planted.

CRACK-BOOM.

The Overlord's core shattered into a thousand gleaming violet shards. The massive creature froze mid-motion, its petrified frame instantly hardening into brittle, gray stone before collapsing into a mountain of dust and rubble.

The suffocating pressure in the room vanished in an instant.

Mei landed cleanly on her feet, rolling out of the dust cloud and coming up in a defensive crouch. She stayed motionless for three long seconds, listening for any secondary mana signatures.

Nothing. The Dungeon core was destroyed.

She immediately turned around, her lethal posture vanishing as she rushed back to the team.

"Elias! Your arm!" She grabbed his right gauntlet, her fingers quickly unclasping the scorched metal plating. The dampeners had overheated, scorching the leather beneath. She pulled out a cooling pack from her pouch and pressed it firmly against his wrist, her brow furrowed in fierce concern. "I told you not to let the dampeners redline!"

"It held, didn't it, kid?" Elias chuckled weakly, gritting his teeth through the cold sting of the pack. "Couldn't let the big guy hit you mid-air."

Mei glared at him, but her eyes softening was impossible to hide. She turned to Shane, running a quick visual scan over him, then looked up at Joshua jumping down from the ledge.

"No casualties," Shane said quietly, a proud, tired smile breaking through the soot on his face. "We cleared an Overlord-class sector without losing a single soul."

Mei looked at her soot-stained hands, then at the three men surrounding her. In her past lives, an Overlord hunt meant bodies left behind, sacrifices calculated, and squadmates abandoned as bait.

Here, they were all breathing. All standing.

"Let's get out of here," Mei said softly, her voice carrying a warmth that belonged entirely to this life. "The surface is waiting."
