Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 68: Shattered Stone
The soil beneath their boots vibrated with a low, sub-audible hum. The core of Verdant Reach was feeding.
"Root-stalkers!" Elias roared, slamming his tower shield down just as a wall of spiked, petrified tendrils burst through the earth.
The impact rattled the heavy metal plate, but before the roots could wrap around his armor, Mei was already airborne. She vaulted off the rim of Elias’s shield, her twin blades out and spinning like a cyclone of honed steel. Sever, twist, strike. She shredded the thrashing tendrils into a hail of splintered wood and sap before they could coil around his legs.
"Up!" Mei shouted, landing lightly on a moss-covered pillar. "They're hunting by ground vibration!"
"On it!" Joshua fired his grapple wire into an overhead gantry overgrown with luminous flora, zipping fifteen feet into the canopy. From his perch, he racked his rifle bolt back. "Two heavy mana signatures closing fast at twelve o'clock!"
The foliage fifty yards ahead exploded outward. Two Earth-Hide Brutes—massive, four-legged juggernauts encrusted in jagged granite and petrified oak—charged through the clearing like runaway locomotives. The ground shook with every thunderous stride.
Shane drew his broadsword, stepping up beside Elias to lock shields, but Mei dropped from her pillar directly between them and the charging beasts.
"Don't engage head-on! Their hides reflect physical impact!" Mei called back, her voice an anchor of razor-sharp focus amidst the chaos. "Elias, plant the shield and draw the left one’s eye! Shane, take its flank!"
"What about the right one?!" Shane shouted over the deafening roar of the oncoming Brute.
"Mine," Mei spat.
She didn't sprint away; she charged straight toward the multi-ton monstrosity. As the right Brute dropped its armored head to trample her, Mei planted her right boot into a raised root and launched herself upward, skimming mere inches over its granite-plated skull.
Mid-flight, she unclipped a heavy incendiary charge from her belt—a high-density mana grenade scavenged from their last haul. She drove her short blade deep into the vulnerable seam where the beast's neck met its shoulder, creating a gap in its stony hide, and shoved the explosive directly into the wound.
She kicked off its back, twisting in mid-air. "Joshua! Hit the charge!"
A single, suppressed rifle shot cracked through the roar of the forest. Joshua's round hit the grenade's detonator with absolute precision.
BOOM.
An explosion of fire and shattered rock erupted from the Brute's neck. The beast shrieked, its momentum collapsing into a violent skidding roll that plowed a thirty-foot trench through the underbrush before going limp.
Mei hit the ground in a low roll, coming up instantly with her daggers flared.
Behind her, Elias held the line against the second Brute, his shield flashing with a burst of kinetic light as it absorbed the creature's ramming charge. Shane darted in from the side, plunging his broadsword through the weakened joint behind its front leg, dropping the second monster with a heavy, dust-raising thud.
The clearing went dead quiet, save for the crackle of burning foliage and the rapid breathing of the squad.
Mei whirled around, her lethal focus instantly shifting into frantic, silent evaluation. She swept her eyes over Elias's armor—checking for hairline fractures in the kinetic plate—then flashed a glare toward the canopy where Joshua hung.
"Joshua! Status!" she barked.
"Unscratched, Captain!" Joshua called down, sliding down his wire and landing with a light tap of his boots. "Gantry held fine."
Mei marched straight up to Elias, grabbing the edge of his massive shield and yanking it aside to inspect his forearms. Her fingers pressed into his gauntlets, probing for fractures or crushed joints from the heavy kinetic recoil.
"You took that impact too close to the chest," she grumbled, her voice tight with a fierce, protective edge that completely betrayed her cold exterior. "Your dampeners are glowing hot, Elias. If you crack a wrist, I'm not carrying your shield."
Elias let out a deep, booming laugh that rattled his chest, looking down at the small, dead-serious assassin fussing over his gear. "Understood, kid. I'll let the metal do more of the work next time."
"Make sure you do," she muttered, her hands lingering for just a fraction of a second to ensure his bracing straps were tight before she let go.
She turned back to face the dark, cavernous entrance of the inner spire, where the deep blue pulse of the Dungeon core illuminated the fog like a beating heart. Her eyes hardened once more, the cold, merciless killer returning to the front.
"The boss chamber is just past this archway," Mei said, her hand tightening around the hilt of her blade. "No mistakes. Stay tight, stay alive."
