The air grew heavier as they pushed deeper into the eastern artery, shifting from the sharp, metallic tang of Skarn hemolymph to the acrid reek of ozone and scorched copper.

Above them, the ceiling pulsed. Veins of iridescent azure stone—unmistakable Spire corruption—crawled through the reinforced concrete like glowing mold, casting long, twisted shadows along the narrow passage.

Mei led the vanguard, but her eyes were hyper-focused on the path ahead.

Her breath came in measured, silent draws. Every muscle in her body was coiled, her eyes sweeping the claustrophobic space. Ten feet ahead, Lucien was a ghost in the dark, his footsteps entirely noiseless. Behind her, the steady thud of Joshua’s heavy boots provided an anchor she was still trying not to rely on.

"Up ahead," Lucien’s voice drifted back from the gloom, barely louder than a whisper. "The tunnel dead-ends at a blast door. Primary lock is slagged, but the seal is broken."

Shane stepped up beside Mei, shifting his hammer to his shoulder. Its weighted head clanked faintly against his armor as he took in the scene with a commander’s eye. "Slagged by who? Skarn don't use plasma."

"They don't," Elias muttered from the middle of the stack, his fingers flying across the glowing diagnostic screen strapped to his forearm. "Which means whatever opened that door came from the deeper levels. Or..." He paused, his voice dropping an octave. "It was Ethan's vanguard."

The name hit the tight corridor like a dropped blade.

Shane’s gaze flicked briefly to Mei, registering the subtle hitch in her shoulders and the way her hand instantly tightened on her hilt until her knuckles turned marble-white.

Three lives. Three cycles of watching Ethan turn every shared victory into a trap.

"He's ahead of us," Mei said, her tone devoid of emotion. Cold. Flat. The assassin’s armor slamming shut. "He knows the Gate layout as well as I do."

"He doesn't have our unit," Shane corrected firmly, his deep voice leaving no room for argument. "And we're not walking into his trap blindly." He turned to face the group, his posture rock-solid. "Elias, keep your eyes on that thermal readout. Lucien, scout the high angles. We breach on my mark."

Mei swallowed her instinct to cut in and take control. In her past lives, she would have pushed ahead alone, ignoring the chain of command to eliminate threats on her own terms. But Shane was the Captain. His authority kept Team Blaze grounded, and for the first time, she forced herself to respect it rather than treat it as a vulnerability.

They reached the threshold. The massive steel blast door was warped outward, its central mechanism melted into a gloopy mass of slag. Beyond it lay the Central Conduit—a colossal, multi-tiered chamber dominated by a shattered elevator shaft that plummeted into the abyss below.

Suspended over the center of the pit was a massive, floating crystal spire, humming with volatile energy.

And around its base, the shadows were moving.

Not Skarn.

Humanoid shapes, draped in tattered tactical gear, their limbs unnaturally elongated and skin fused with jagged, glowing Spire glass. Puppet-stalkers—vanguard soldiers who had succumbed to the Gate’s mana corruption, their corpses reanimated by the core's pull.

"Eight targets," Lucien reported quietly from a high ledge above the doorway. "Guarding the descent platform."

"Ethan's leftovers," Shane growled, his eyes scanning the layout. "He left them to choke the choke-point. Here's how we play it. Elias, shock-burst the gantry to break their cluster. Lucien, drop the snipers from above. Joshua, you and I take the main landing and hold the breach. Mei—" Shane looked at her, his expression grim. "You cover our flanks. Keep anything from circling around behind us."

"Understood," Mei said softly.

In the past, being assigned "flank duty" would have felt like an insult—or a sign that she was being pushed out. But as she watched Shane move into position, she realized the truth: Shane wasn't sidelining her. He was entrusting her with the team's blind spot. He was trusting her to keep them alive while they pushed forward.

"Move out!" Shane ordered, swinging his hammer high as he led the charge onto the platform.

Elias hurled a flash-puck, blinding three of the corrupted vanguard as Shane brought his hammer down like a thunderbolt, shattering the concrete beneath their feet. Lucien plummeted from the rafters, a streak of silver steel cutting down two snipers in a heartbeat.

Joshua slammed his shield into a lunging creature, holding the front line alongside Shane.

Then Mei saw it.

High on the shattered scaffolding above Shane's head, a ninth puppet-stalker—stealthed by the Spire's blue radiance—was raising a jagged glass blade, creeping directly toward Shane’s exposed back while he was locked in combat with two hostiles.

Shane couldn't see it. Joshua was pinned down.

Her body didn't hesitate.

She didn't call out a warning and hope Shane would react in time. She didn't retreat to save herself.

Mei sprinted across the upper catwalk, launched herself off a broken pillar, and intercepted the creature mid-air. Her blade bit deep into its neck seam, dragging it down away from Shane just as its weapon slashed through empty air.

They hit the metal gantry hard. The creature thrashed, but Mei twisted, driving her dagger through its core plate until it went still.

Shane glanced back, his eyes widening slightly as he saw the dead stalker at his heels, inches from where he had been standing.

"Got your back, Captain," Mei panted, her boots catching her weight as she pushed herself up, instantly scanning the shadows for the next threat to her team.

Shane let out a low, grim chuckle and raised his hammer in a silent nod of acknowledgment. "Good eye, Mei. Keep pushing!"

For the first time in three lives, Mei didn't feel like a weapon being used. She felt like a shield—protecting the people who had chosen to stand beside her.
