Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 61: One Step at a Time
The silence hit like a physical blow.
One second the ruins were a screaming meat grinder—collapsing concrete, screeching chitin, teeth tearing through dark. The next, absolute zero. As if a titan’s hand had reached down the shaft and choked the life out of the earth.
Mei slammed her back against the broken archway, hand pinned to her ribs. Warm red dripped through her fingers.
The silence pressed in, heavy and suffocating.
Drip. Drip.
Water. A dying generator humming beneath the floorboards. Dust raining down from pulverized beams.
Nothing else.
And that was wrong. The ruins were never empty. Even after a slaughter, there was always something dragging its half-mangled body through the rubble.
Then came the sound.
Shhhk. Shhhk.
Not machinery. Jagged obsidian plates dragging over bare stone.
Skarn.
Mei snapped her gaze up.
Across the kill-zone, Joshua yanked a tourniquet tight around his forearm, teeth bared. Shane leaned hard on his warhammer, eyes darting through the dust haze. Lucien had already evaporated into the gloom. Elias crouched behind a fractured pillar, desperately recalibrating what little gear they had left.
Four survivors. Alive.
Because they had refused to leave her behind.
Mei tore her eyes away before the thought could take root. It felt dangerous—a soft, weak pulse aching behind her ribs. Gratitude was a luxury that got assassins killed. She had been carried by people she never intended to need.
Shhhk-shhhk.
Closer. Eastern tunnel. Jointed, armored legs flexing in the dark.
Mei’s knuckles turned white on her hilt.
"You're bleeding through," Joshua said, stepping toward her.
"I'm fine."
"That's three times you've lied."
"I adjusted my balance."
Shane let out a breathy snort. "Right. Falling flat on your face is an advanced balance technique."
Mei shot him a look sharp enough to draw blood. Shane instantly found a sudden interest in inspecting his hammer’s warhead.
Joshua stopped three feet short. He didn't reach for her. He didn't crowd her space. He just extended a roll of heavy gauze.
"Wrap it."
Mei stared at his open palm. Three lives of muscle memory screamed that a free hand was a distraction for a concealed dagger. Ethan had taught her that. Fei had carved it into her soul: Trust is just a knife waiting for an spine.
"I don't need help," she hissed.
"I know," Joshua said smoothly. "You don't have to prove it every five seconds."
The words struck harder than a blade. No control. No condescension. Just an offer.
Mei snatched the cloth. "Thank you." The words tasted foreign, metallic.
Joshua’s lips twitched. "You're welcome."
CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK!
The floor shuddered.
A high-pitched, grinding screech shattered the quiet as the darkness in the eastern tunnel violently burst wide open.
"CONTACT!" Lucien roared from the shadows.
BOOM!
The structural wall exploded inward. A colossal Skarn tore through the masonry, black chitin glistening, its razor-edged mandibles snapping like hydraulic shears. Two more swarmed over its back, serrated scythe-limbs carving deep trenches into the concrete floor.
"Formation!" Joshua yelled.
Mei’s eyes swept the room instantly. Four on the deck—
Screeech!
She snapped her head up. "Ceiling! Two overhead!"
Shane didn't hesitate. He planted his boots, pivoted, and drove his hammer upward with raw, explosive power. The Skarn dropping from the rafters met two hundred pounds of reinforced steel mid-air.
CRUNCH!
Hemolymph and shattered black shell rained down as the beast was blasted straight into the ceiling beam before crashing hard.
The second ceiling hunter lunged straight for Elias’s throat.
"Behind!" Elias yelled, ducking blindly.
Shadows folded. Lucien materialized on the monster’s back, twin daggers plunging simultaneously into the soft membrane behind its head-plate. The beast hit the floor dead, skidding to a halt inches from Elias’s boots.
"Three advancing!" Elias screamed, hurling a shock-puck into the center of the room. "DOWN!"
BLAM!
Violent arc-light detonated across the chamber. The advancing Skarn seized, their nerve-clusters frying as electric currents locked their armored limbs in place.
Now.
Mei exploded into motion.
No thought. Pure, lethal instinct.
Forward step. Slip the reach. Drive the blade.
She darted beneath a thrashing scythe-limb, driving her dagger deep into the soft seam under the Skarn’s jaw. Green gore spattered her face as she yanked the steel free, turning—
A fourth Skarn, breaking free of the arc-flash, struck from her blind spot. Its serrated arm whistled straight for her neck.
Mei tried to twist—too slow, her ribs burning—
CLANG!
Joshua was there.
He slammed his armored gauntlet straight into the Skarn’s maw, shattering its mandibles and forcefully shoving the fifty-pound beast off-balance.
Mei’s heart slammed against her ribs. He had covered her blind spot.
Old rage flared instantly—the instinct to snarl, to push him away, to brand it as interference before he could turn on her. But the Skarn was already recovering, lunging again. Joshua hadn't stolen the kill. He’d bought her two seconds of life.
She swallowed the poison.
"Left!" Mei barked.
Joshua read her instantly. He threw his weight left, driving his gauntlet into the monster’s shoulder, forcing its chest wide open.
Mei lunged into the opening, lunging forward to drive her blade straight through its sternum core.
The Skarn went limp.
"Two more breaking right!" Lucien’s voice cut through the chaos.
Shane wheeled around, sweeping his hammer in a brutal, low arc that shattered the lead Skarn’s primary leg joints. "Keep 'em pinned!"
Elias fired a concussive round point-blank into the second monster's thorax. The blast rocked it backward straight into Mei's path. She ducked under a wild swipe, carved through its knee joint, and let its own momentum crash it face-first into a stone pillar. Before it could rise, Lucien dropped from above, driving a blade straight through the base of its skull.
The chamber turned into a rhythmic, terrifying meat grinder.
Shane held the frontline like an anchor of solid steel. Elias kept the swarm disoriented with flash-bursts. Lucien stalked the outer darkness, cutting off every flank. Joshua filled every gap before it could break.
And Mei—
Mei stopped trying to fight alone.
When Shane flushed a beast from cover, she didn't jump in early—she waited, letting him drive it straight onto her blade.
When Lucien vanished, she didn't waste a split-second looking behind her—she trusted the shadow was covered.
When Joshua yelled "DUCK!", she didn't question it. She dropped instantly.
A razor-sharp carapace arm sheared the air an inch above her hair. Mei rolled off her knee, drove her weapon up through the creature's throat, and ripped it sideways.
The final Skarn scrambled over the pile of its slaughtered kin, lunging wildly for Elias.
"Mine!" Joshua surged forward, catching the monster's pincers in a lock-jaw grip with his gauntlets. "MEI!"
She saw the strike line.
Shane had broken its stance. Elias had blinded it. Joshua held its weapons.
Mei cleared the distance in a single leap, driving her blade straight through the center of its head plate.
The Skarn twitched once, then collapsed into a lifeless heap.
Silence plunged back over the chamber.
Mei stood panting, blood dripping from her blade, her chest heaving.
Not from terror.
From the terrifying, electric realization of what had just happened.
A unit. A single, breathing weapon.
Joshua walked over, wiping dark hemolymph from his visor. "You still intact?"
Mei looked across the room. Shane was grinning through a bloody nose. Lucien nodded once from the shadow of a pillar. Elias was already breathlessly swearing at his burnt-out battery packs.
They were all alive. Because she had trusted them. Because they had covered her.
Her thumb traced the blood on her palm. Joshua’s gauntlet had been inches from her neck during the fight. He could have ended her three times over. Instead, he had bled to keep her standing.
Ethan’s face flickered in her memory. Fei’s cold voice echoed in her mind.
They were wrong.
Dependence wasn't weakness. Trust wasn't a blindfold. It was choosing who got to stand in your guard while you carved through the dark.
Joshua held out a hand to help her over the rubble.
Mei stared at it.
The old ghost whispered: He'll cut you.
The new voice, small and razor-sharp, whispered: Let him try.
She reached out and gripped his hand.
The contact was quick, solid, and entirely her choice. She didn't let him pull her weight; she just felt the steady, unyielding warmth of a teammate holding the line.
Joshua blinked in genuine shock.
Mei dropped her hand immediately, her jaw setting into sharp steel. "Don't get used to it."
Joshua’s grin broke wide. "Wouldn't dream of it."
Shane burst out laughing. Lucien let out a rare, quiet chuckle.
Mei turned toward the black tunnel ahead, her hand tightening on her hilt. She was still an assassin. She was still lethal, paranoid, and damaged.
But as Joshua fell in on her left, Shane locked down the rear, Lucien melted into the forward shadows, and Elias fell into step behind them—
Mei didn't pull away.
She matched their stride.
One step. Then another.
Into the dark, together.
