The rock wall exploded inward in a shower of golden sparks, and the creature wearing her face stepped through the fire.

Mei didn't flinch. She pivoted into a low stance, her daggers raised, eyes locked onto the duplicate's every movement. Beside her, Elias calmly slipped his pen into his coat pocket, his thumb resting over the clasp of his leather ledger.

"Elias Voss," Mei said, her voice dropping into an icy, measured rhythm that cut through the ringing in their ears. "If you're going to stand there cataloguing my death again, at least make yourself useful."

Elias adjusted his charcoal coat, his pale eyes tracking the hairline fractures spreading across the golden threshold behind the duplicate. "I am an archivist, Mei. I observe, I document, and I calculate structural probabilities. For instance, I can tell you that the golden seal behind your doppelgänger is operating on a three-second resonance pulse."

Shane wiped blood from his brow, his heavy hammer humming as he stepped up to Mei's flank. "Is that supposed to help us kill it?"

"It means," Elias said smoothly, stepping half a pace back into a pocket of safe ground, "that every thirty seconds, the spatial weight in this chamber shifts. If you strike on the odd pulse, your physical force will be reduced by half. Strike on the even pulse, and the dungeon's own gravity will amplify your blade."

The duplicate smiled, that empty, unmarred face tilting slightly as golden light flared along its arms. "You always were clever, Voss. But numbers won't save her from what she is."

Mei caught Elias's eye for a fraction of a second. No words passed between them—just the sharp, mutual understanding of two people who had survived the end of the world once before.

"Thirty seconds," Mei muttered, her fingers tightening around the cold hilts of her daggers. "Count it down, Archivist."

"Starting now," Elias replied, opening his notebook to a fresh page. "Try not to die. It ruins the historical record."

Pulse One.

The duplicate moved. It didn't run; it simply ceased to be where it was and reappeared four feet in front of Mei, its hand thrusting forward like a golden spear.

"Odd pulse!" Elias called out, his voice sharp and unhurried over the grinding stone. "Half force!"

Mei didn't try to overpower the strike. As the duplicate's hand shot toward her throat, the heavy air dragged at her arms—exactly as Elias had warned. She deflected the strike with the flat of her left dagger, letting the reduced kinetic energy slide off her blade rather than absorbing it.

The golden palm scraped past her cheek, the sheer heat scorching her skin. Mei lunged under the duplicate's guard, driving her right blade straight toward its sternum. The steel hit an invisible wall of dense gravity, penetrating only an inch before halting completely.

He wasn't lying, Mei logged instantly. Odd pulse dampens output.

She kicked off the duplicate's thigh, vaulting backward to reset her footing.

"Ten seconds," Elias droned, his pen flying across the paper as he calculated the dungeon's spatial decay. "Joshua, the ceiling above the arch is load-bearing. If you hit it now, you'll destroy our exit."

Joshua lowered his raised shield, sweat cutting clean lines through the dust on his face. "Then what do I hit?!"

"Wait for my mark."

The duplicate turned slowly, its empty, unblemished face fixing on Mei. Golden runes swirled beneath its skin, illuminating the terrifying purity of a life that had never been broken by war, loss, or betrayal.

"You fight so hard for a world that traded you away," the duplicate whispered, its voice resonating directly inside Mei's skull. "They chained you. They erased your name. They turned you into a lock."

"I don't fight for the world," Mei spat, blood warm in her mouth. She dropped low, muscles coiling in her legs. "I fight because I'm still breathing."

"Five seconds," Elias announced. "Four... three..."

Shane shifted his weight, his knuckles white around the grip of his hammer. "Mei!"

"Two... ONE!" Elias shouted. "EVEN PULSE! STRIKE!"

The heavy pressure in the air vanished, replaced by an intoxicating surge of downward gravity.

Shane roared, slamming his heavy hammer into the stone deckplate. The shockwave didn't just crack the floor—amplified by the dungeon's even pulse, the force erupted forward in a localized tremor, shattering the duplicate's stance and buckling its knees.

Lucien blurred past Shane's shoulder, his twin blades carving two purple arcs through the air that sheared straight through the duplicate's defensive aura, severing the golden light along its arms.

Mei didn't scream. She didn't hesitate. She moved with the cold, absolute precision of a finished contract.

She closed the distance in a heartbeat, capitalizing on the gravity surge. Her left dagger drove straight through the duplicate's right shoulder, pinning its limb, while her right dagger swept up in a lethal arc aimed directly for the ocular nerve.

The duplicate caught Mei's wrist an inch from its eye.

The force of the grip bruised bone, but the creature wasn't looking at Mei's blade. It was looking into her eyes.

"You think you're the survivor," the duplicate whispered, a thin crack of golden light splitting its jaw. "You're just the shell left behind when the Seal closed."

"Then watch the shell kill you," Mei snarled.

Instead of trying to pull her trapped hand free, Mei released her grip on the dagger, letting it drop into her waiting left hand beneath the duplicate's guard. With a brutal upward thrust, she drove the blade clean under the duplicate's jaw, straight through to the roof of its skull.

A blinding flare of white-hot mana detonated from the wound.

The duplicate stiffened. The flawless skin fractured into a million spiderwebs of golden light. It didn't bleed; it began to dissolve into shimmering, volatile ash.

"Odd pulse approaching," Elias warned calmly, not looking up from his ledger. "Five seconds before spatial collapse."

Mei ripped her dagger free, kicking the disintegrating body back toward the glowing threshold. The duplicate collapsed onto its knees, its eyes locking onto Mei one last time as the ancient archway behind it began to crumble.

"The Void Heart... still remembers you..." the duplicate rasped, its voice fragmenting into static before its form shattered into a cloud of gold dust.

The entire vault shuddered violently. Massive boulders rained down from the ceiling as the ancient spell-array holding the chamber together finally broke.

"The exit!" Shane yelled, pointing toward a narrow fissure opening in the far wall. "Move! Now!"

Lucien and Joshua sprinted for the fissure, Shane covering their rear with his shield raised against the falling debris.

Mei turned to grab Elias, but the Archivist was already moving—stepping methodically across the fracturing stone, taking precise, measured strides that completely bypassed the collapsing stress points.

"You're remarkably fast for a historian," Mei muttered, matching his pace as they dove through the narrowing fissure just as a fifty-ton slab of stone slammed shut behind them.

They tumbled out into a quiet, shadowed ruin, choking on gray dust and gasping for air.

Behind them, the vault was completely buried.

Shane collapsed against a broken pillar, breathing heavily, while Joshua sank to the ground, his cracked shield clattering against the floor.

Mei stood up slowly, wiping the mixture of sweat, ash, and blood from her forehead. She sheathed her daggers with a quiet, metallic clack and turned her cold gaze toward Elias Voss.

The Archivist stood near the edge of the ruin, calmly blowing a layer of stone dust off his leather notebook before snapping it shut.

"The duplicate is destroyed," Mei said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "Now finish what you were saying before we were interrupted."

Elias adjusted his charcoal coat, meeting her gaze with unsettling clarity.

"The Eternal Seal wasn't built to contain the Void Heart's energy," Elias repeated, his voice echoing softly in the quiet ruins. "It was built to keep you from waking up. And now that you're back... every gate in the Ashen Sector is going to open."
