Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 52: The Door Beneath the Abyss
The node shattered beneath Mei's dagger in a blinding, violet explosion, sending a violent shockwave of raw black energy ripping through the dungeon's stone network. Crystalline tendrils tore free from the walls with a sickening, wet screech. Crimson symbols burst apart like dying embers, and the creature let out a deafening, bone-rattling roar as its connection to the dungeon vanished.
Mei didn't waste a second admiring the blast—she immediately dropped her gaze to the floor, her assassin's mind calculating the disaster in real time. The destroyed node had been holding the entire lower structure together. Without it, spiderweb fractures were shooting across the chamber at terrifying speed. The left side was already sinking into a gaping, hollow abyss, while the right remained barely supported by ancient stone. Between them stretched a narrow, crumbling bridge leading toward the lower levels.
"We're going to use the collapse!" Mei barked, her cold voice cutting straight through the thunderous noise. "Shane, draw it toward the unstable section! Lucien, get Joshua across and cover him! Joshua, keep your eyes on the ceiling—blast any tendril that tries to anchor ahead of us!"
Shane didn't question her. With a fierce battle cry, he slammed his shield against his chest plate, drawing the enraged monster straight onto the spiderwebbed floor. Lucien grabbed Joshua's arm, dragging him toward the narrow bridge while Joshua fired precise bursts of light upward, shattering crystalline tendrils before they could anchor the ceiling. Mei sprinted along the edge, her eyes tracking the deep stress fractures spreading beneath the creature's immense weight.
The second the monster committed its full weight to the weakened section, Mei lunged forward, drove her dagger deep into an existing foundation crack, and twisted the blade with everything she had.
CRACK-BOOM.
The support collapsed. Half the chamber floor dropped into the abyss, taking a massive chunk of stone with it and forcing the creature back. A wave of blinding dust and rock debris choked the air, blocking the monster's path just long enough for Team Blaze to reach the bridge.
Lucien shoved Joshua onto solid ground on the far side while Shane kept the monster's focus locked on him. Mei crossed last, her sharp eyes spotting a critical stress fracture right beneath the bridge's main anchor.
"Joshua!" Mei screamed over the deafening roar of falling stone. "Break that support when I give the word!"
The creature clawed its way out of the dust cloud and surged onto the narrow bridge, its heavy boots shaking the crumbling structure. Mei stood her ground at the edge, her heart hammering against her ribs, waiting... waiting... until the beast reached the dead center.
"NOW!"
Joshua struck the damaged support with a thunderous blow. The stone gave way instantly. The bridge sagged violently beneath the creature's weight, sending it sliding toward the drop. Team Blaze scrambled onto solid ground while Mei waited until the very last second for Shane to clear the edge—then she kicked off the collapsing stone and leapt across the gap.
The bridge folded into the darkness, carrying the roaring creature and tons of shattered rubble down into the void.
They regrouped on the ledge, panting, covered in gray dust and sweat.
Lucien stared down into the endless pit, his hands trembling slightly as he wiped blood from his brow. "Did that... did that actually kill it?"
Mei watched the shifting shadow and grinding debris far below. "No," she said, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. "We only bought time."
Down in the dark, a massive, black crystalline hand burst through the pile of broken stone.
But as the dust settled, the collapse revealed something far stranger buried directly beneath the floor.
A blinding, brilliant golden light spilled upward from an enormous, ancient doorway buried in the deep earth. Its polished surface carried glowing markings—completely different from the crimson symbols of the Sovereign or the black corruption of the monster.
Mei approached the threshold, every nerve ending in her body on high alert.
The moment her shadow crossed the threshold, the glowing markings shifted and rearranged themselves with a soft, humming resonance.
Mei froze. Her breath caught in her throat, her pulse spiking.
The symbols reformed into an ancient dialect she had seen only once before—carved into the Void Heart during her agonizing death in her first life.
Then, the glowing script formed a single, undeniable word:
MEI.
Shane stepped beside her, his hand resting on his shield, his brow furrowed in deep concern. "Mei? What is it? What does it say?"
Mei stared at the door, her throat so dry she couldn't speak.
Before she could form an answer, the golden seal unlocked with a heavy, mechanical rumble. The ancient doors slowly swung inward, revealing a figure standing quietly in the soft light beyond.
Mei's daggers slipped inches from her grasp. Her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror.
She knew that face. She knew every line of it. She had held them as they bled out, watching the life drain from their eyes in her first timeline.
The figure stepped forward, looking directly at her with a gentle, terrifyingly familiar expression.
"You finally came back."
For the first time since her rebirth, Mei had no tactical answer. No contingency. No escape plan.
Because the person standing beyond the golden door wasn't supposed to exist.
