Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 39: Shadows We Leave Behind
The heavy oak doors of the Eternal Seal Guild Hall swung open beneath Shane's iron shoulder, yielding to the weight of Team Blaze.
Inside, the scent of expensive incense and vintage wine was quickly cut by the sharp tang of rain and monster blood trailing off their armor. Adrian bypassed the foyer, his fingers casually drawing a series of green runes across the doorframes to seal the spatial wards from the inside out.
"The Central Council's scrying grid is completely blinded," Adrian said, his voice quiet, steady. "We have three hours before an auditor realizes the perimeter went dark."
Lucien stepped toward the long mahogany table, uncorking an unopened bottle of aged wine with a soft pop. He poured a splash into a silver goblet, his thin smile flashing in the dim light. "Three vaults, a high-tier alchemy lab, and fifty thousand gold in unallocated bonds. Not a bad haul for a single night's work."
Mei didn't look at the wine or the velvet banners hanging from the vaulted ceiling. She unbuckled her weapon harness, letting it hit the table with a heavy, metallic clatter. Her heart rate had finally slowed, but the deep ache under her collarbone—where a falling boulder had grazed her skin—stung with every breath.
She reached for her salve, old assassin instincts screaming at her to patch the wound in secret, away from prying eyes.
A hand reached down first.
Joshua picked up the small glass vial from the table, unstoppering it without a word. He didn't ask for permission, nor did he force her. He simply stood there, steady as bedrock, waiting for her to make the choice.
Rule One broken.
Rule Three broken.
Mei didn't pull her blade. She didn't flinch. Slowly, she tilted her head back, allowing him to press the cool, magical salve against her torn shoulder. The magic seared through the burning ache, closing the laceration in seconds.
"Better?" Joshua asked softly.
"Acceptable," Mei muttered, though a strange, unfamiliar warmth settled in her chest.
Shane leaned against a marble pillar, crossing his massive arms with a low grunt. "Alright. Now that our assassin isn't going to bleed out on the rugs, who's opening the main vault?"
Lucien tossed a set of heavy iron keys into the air, catching them with a smirk. "Allow me."
Mei picked up her twin daggers, sliding them into their scabbards with a crisp, final click. She stepped toward the inner staircase leading down into the stronghold's core, her shadow merging with the four men falling into formation beside her.
For the first time in two lives, Mei wasn't running from a ghost in the dark.
She was leading the storm.
