Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 36: Echoes of the First Life
The Void Gate swallowed them whole. Ozone, ash, dried marrow. No light. No horizon. Just black stone trembling beneath their boots.
Grade-S dungeon. Zero room for error.
Mei counted three seconds. In her past life with Team Shadow, she would have already been thirty meters ahead—used by Ethan as disposable bait to draw the horde's aggro before they locked the gates behind her. That was Shadow's doctrine: calculate the sacrifice, purge the asset, secure the prize.
She almost bolted out of pure muscle memory. Then Captain Shane's iron boots ground firmly against the stone behind her.
She stayed.
The cavern detonated.
Iron-Hide Crawlers burst through obsidian walls, eight eyes glinting, mandibles snapping like giant shears.
"TWELVE O'CLOCK!" Shane slammed his tower shield down, his taunt flaring crimson and dragging three massive beasts straight into his armor.
He's exposed. Left flank open. Move. Kill.
In Team Shadow, an exposed flank was a trap designed to test her reaction speed. But Mei lunged, and Shane glanced back—not out of panic, but to hand her the angle. He wasn't setting her up to be collateral. He was creating a launchpad.
Mei planted one boot on his shield, the next on his shoulder, and vaulted over the frontline. Midair, a Crawler snapped at her ribs.
A violet hex shattered its leg joint. Kael.
"Joints compromised!" he shouted over comms. No cold evaluation of her worth. Just hard, actionable data.
Mei drove her dagger through the weakened socket, ripping downward as black blood sprayed her face. The beast buckled.
A shadow surged in her blind spot. Her old assassin instincts screamed betrayal—expecting the cold bite of a teammate's blade silencing her to cover an retreat, just like Ethan had done at the Eternal Seal. Instead, a silver sword intercepted the mandibles inches from her spine.
Joshua. The heavy kinetic impact drove him back half a step. "Keep moving! I've got your back!"
She didn't freeze to question his motives. She trusted the steel behind her. Dropping her bound dagger, Mei whipped out her stiletto, slid beneath a second beast's underbelly, and gutted its unarmored core. It collapsed into ash.
Joshua caught her hand, pulling her up. Back-to-back, breathing in sync. No math. No trade-offs.
Then the cavern ceiling buckled.
The Dungeon Alpha rose—a towering blight of twisted bone and liquid darkness, its chest glowing with an unstable wide-area mana pulse.
Mei charged, intent on ending it herself before anyone could trade her life for time.
"MEI, STOP! IT'S A TRAP!" Ryan's voice cut through the roar over the comms.
She skidded, tearing grooves into the bedrock.
"If you hit the head, the chest collapses and detonates the floor!" Ryan yelled, his scanner parsing the mana flow. "Left shoulder! Break the flickering rune!"
In Shadow, they would have let her trigger the trap if it guaranteed the Alpha's death. But Ryan was reading the telemetry to keep her alive.
"Shane! Thirty degrees left! Drive it!" Mei barked.
Shane grinned behind his visor, slamming his shield into the Alpha's knee. "Finally giving orders!"
"Kael, debuff the arm! Joshua, hold the perimeter!"
Hexes snapped. Joshua held the flank. The opening cleared.
Mei sprinted up a dead Crawler's back, launched into the gloom, and twisted past the Alpha's sweeping claw. Angle. Trajectory. Precision.
She drove steel directly into the shoulder rune.
Light exploded. The Alpha shrieked, cracks spiderwebbing across its body before it disintegrated into black ash.
Silence slammed into the cavern. Mei landed in a low crouch, blades bared.
Shane lowered his shield, panting. "Damn."
Kael brushed ash from his coat. "Efficient."
Joshua wiped his sword, his eyes locking onto hers with quiet relief. Ryan gave a single, firm nod through his visor interface.
When Team Shadow cleared a room, Mei was already fading into the dark, nursing her wounds alone while they logged the loot. Here, she sheathed her steel and stayed put.
Shane heavy-handed her shoulder. She didn't flinch. "Welcome to Blaze, assassin."
"I was already on the team."
"Yeah," Shane smirked. "Now you're acting like it."
The floor shuddered. A low, abyssal roar echoed from the deep dark—something vastly worse than the Alpha awakening.
Mei's hands dropped to her hilts. Team Shadow had abandoned her to the dark. Team Blaze stood shoulder-to-shoulder beside her.
She didn't step forward alone. She waited for them to move together.
