Nightfall swallowed them into the Iron Wastes. Behind the mountains, the sky's crimson wound still bled through the clouds—Astraea watching from afar. For once, no gunfire. After days of relentless slaughter, the silence felt like a trap.

Team Blaze breached an ancient subterranean forge. Half-collapsed stone, thick cover, one main entrance, and a tight breach to the east. Mei cleared both before dropping to the dirt.

Kael sparked a fire. Ryan primed proximity sensors around the threshold. Captain Shane Williams vanished, reappearing seconds later loaded with impossible rations.

Mei sat near the embers, obsessively wiping down a spotless shadow-blade while the Heart of the Apocalypse pulsed violet under her ribs. Restless.

"Most people relax when nothing's trying to kill them," Joshua said, dropping beside her.

"I am."

"You've scrubbed that same spot four times."

"Bad light."

"Sure," Joshua smirked. "Sleep, Mei."

"You first."

"I don't have an apocalyptic relic trying to rewrite my insides."

"You don't know what it's doing."

"I know enough."

A beat. The corner of Mei's mouth twitched upward.

"There," Joshua said.

The smirk vanished instantly. "There what?"

"You smiled."

"Imagined it."

Captain Shane looked over from his gear check, grinning. "Did Mei just smile?"

"Don't," Mei warned.

"Confirmed," Kael called from the fire.

Ryan adjusted his visor. "Data confirms."

"Traitors," Mei muttered.

"When we met, I thought you'd gut me," Shane laughed, tossing dried meat at Joshua.

"You stole my ammo," Mei snapped.

"And you noticed!"

"I notice everything."

Kael leaned back. "Remember the bridge collapse? Two hundred meters."

"No," Mei shot back.

"You tried to jump it!"

"I made it."

"You missed!"

"Objective was reached," Mei insisted.

"Through three buildings," Kael barked.

"Four," Ryan corrected. "The fourth sustained structural damage."

Joshua stared at her. "How are you alive?"

"Practice."

Laughter hit the room. Mei shook her head, letting the moment hang.

Exhaustion took them fast. Shane passed out first, then Kael, then Ryan. Joshua held on, but his eyelids were heavy.

Mei stood. "Watch duty. Sleep."

Joshua hesitated, then slumped back. "Fine."

Midway to the threshold, gravel shifted outside. Mei's hand locked on her hilt. A pebble rolled higher up the ridge. Deliberate. She froze, watching the shadows. The wind picked up, scattering loose grit. False alarm—or just the slope settling. She'd sweep the perimeter at first light.

She turned back, noticed Shane had kicked his blanket off, pulled it over his shoulder, and headed for the fire instead of the cold outer ledge.

Joshua looked up. "Changed your mind?"

"No. Still watching." She sat beside him and threw half her heavy cloak over his shoulders.

"Thought you were cold," he murmured.

"I am. You're worse."

"Thanks."

Mei focused on the dark entrance. Her chest throbbed once, heavy and warm. Five alive. Five breathing. Still here.

Then her instincts screamed.

The wind died instantly. Zero breeze.

Ryan's sensors were silent, but outside, a freshly dragged line cut through the gravel. Someone had bypassed the perimeter without tripping a single trace.

Her hand clamped around her hilt.

"Mei?" Joshua whispered, sensing the shift.

She didn't answer.

Above the ridge, the crimson sky flickered. A shadow detached from the rocks—moving away, not toward them.

Mei's jaw set hard. They had been watched. And whoever was out there had just seen enough.

That was so much worse.
