Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 31: The Sky Descends
The violet sparks off Mei's arm-blades had barely died into the sulfurous mist when the sky reacted.
It wasn't a sound at first, but a sudden, violent drop in air pressure that made the team's ears pop in unison. The bleeding wound in the firmament—the tear leading back to Astraea—began to pulse with a sick, blinding silver light. The shattered sky was no longer just open; it was descending.
"Perimeter's burning!"
Kael burst through the low-hanging fog, his boots leaving charred, sparking footprints on the frozen stone. Black lightning leaped wildly across his blade, arcing toward the sky in desperate, erratic bursts. "Mei! Spatial fold incoming—top of the ridge, three seconds!"
Joshua didn't hesitate. He slammed his shadow-forged shield into the mouth of the narrow pass, anchoring his boots into the basalt. "Ryan, move!"
Ryan scrambled up the jagged spire, his tactical visor digging into the stone for traction as he calibrated his remaining micro-charges. Down below, his UI was still a glitching mess of dead system text, but his instincts were sharper than any mini-map. "I see them!" he shouted through the gale. "Three vanguard spheres—no, four! They're dropping out of the fold without warp thrusters. They're using the planet's own gravity against us!"
The silver spheres hit the cliffside like fallen meteors. Stone shattered; steam and superheated copper air roared through the pass.
"Shane, now!" Mei barked, her black-and-violet wings flaring to catch the thermal draft as she launched herself directly into the fog.
From the dark beneath the cliff, Captain Shane Williams didn't even blink. He adjusted the setting on his sidearm, aligning his shot with the erratic rhythm pulsing in Mei's chest. Decay frequency calibrated. He pulled the trigger.
A beam of heavy energy tore through the mist, striking the lead sphere just as its thermal cannons spun up. The high-tech Astraean armor didn't explode—it simply lost its cohesion, turning to a harmless spray of metallic dust in mid-air.
"It works!" Shane shouted, already cycling the next shot. "Their density is unstable down here!"
Mei hit the second sphere like a falling star. Her blades, burning with the power of the Heart, unraveled the silver hull in a single, sweeping arc. Black lightning from Kael's sword finished the third, grounding the kinetic blast into the rock before it could reach Joshua's shield line.
Within moments, the ridge fell silent again, save for the crackle of dying spatial pressure and the heavy breathing of Team Blaze's survivors.
Mei landed heavily beside the smoking wreckage, her shadow-wings folding back into her shoulders. Her chest throbbed, a terrifying, beautiful heat spreading from the Heart of the Apocalypse through her entire body. The system was gone. The farm was broken.
She looked back at her team—bruised, battered, but standing unbroken against the cold light of an alien Empire.
"We move through the pass," Mei said, her voice ringing clear against the dead iron sky. "They know we can bleed them now. Next time, they'll send a fleet—and we'll be waiting."
