Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 2: When Reality Buckles
The static in the air hit Mei first—a sharp, copper-and-ozone tang that made the hair on her arms stand up. Then came the smell: scorched iron, ozone, and fresh blood.
His blood.
Mei's heart slammed against her ribs with the violence of a trapped bird. The Obsidian Vaults of the Abyssal Reach. In her first life, she had arrived ten minutes too late—finding only a shattered core, a wall painted crimson, and Joshua Chen's cold, lifeless body.
Not this time.
She blurred down the crumbling granite stairwell, silver spatial ether wrapping around her boots to deaden her footsteps. The air grew heavier, thick with the suffocating pressure of an overcharged dungeon core.
Through the dense veil of lingering smoke, she saw him.
Joshua stood alone beside the pulsing, erratic amber glow of the Core Fragment. He was already battered—his tactical vest scorched, a jagged cut bleeding freely over his left brow, dripping down his jaw. Yet his posture remained rock-solid, his boots planted firmly into the buckling stone as his fingers flew across his hand-scanner with frantic, disciplined speed.
God, he's alive. A sudden, sharp wave of relief surged through Mei's chest, hot and dizzying, almost knocking the wind out of her.
"Core integrity dropping!" Joshua barked into his comms, his deep voice carrying that familiar, stubborn authority that made Mei's throat tighten with phantom grief. "Seventy percent and plummeting! Team Blaze, complete the evacuation! I'll hold the containment field!"
Always the selfless idiot. Always standing between the meat grinder and everyone else.
Behind him, concealed in the dense shadow of an overhead archway, a faint shimmer rippled in the air.
Mei's eyes narrowed into lethal slits. Fei.
The Team Shadow assassin was already in position, holding venom-coated stilettos, waiting for the core to destabilize just enough to mask Joshua's murder. In the original timeline, Joshua never even heard the strike coming.
Mei didn't hesitate. She didn't call out. She folded space.
Pop.
The air displaced with a sharp, vacuum hiss directly behind Joshua.
Joshua's combat instincts flared—he spun on his heel, pulling his sidearm with terrifying speed, his amber eyes wide with sudden shock and defensive fury. "Who—?!"
Before he could pull the trigger, Mei stepped into his personal space, grabbed his tactical vest, and yanked him backward with ruthless strength.
Clang!
Fei's poison-dripping blade sliced through the empty air where Joshua's neck had been a millisecond prior, striking the stone floor and spraying yellow sparks.
Joshua gasped, the cold realization of the ambush hitting him as he stared at the cloaked assassin who had just tried to end him. "A phantom strike...?"
Mei didn't give Fei a second chance. She brought her boot up in a lethal, space-boosted front kick that caught Fei squarely in the ribs. Bone splintered with a sickening crack, launching the Team Shadow agent fifty feet back through the smoke and smashing her into a stone pillar.
Silence fell over the small alcove, save for the rhythmic, pulsing roar of the dying core.
Joshua staggered back half a step, his sidearm still raised, his chest heaving as he stared at Mei. His amber eyes swept over her unknown face, her cold, lethal posture, and the silver spatial energy still crackling faintly around her knuckles. Confusion, adrenaline, and intense curiosity warred across his features.
"You..." Joshua breathed, his voice rough with shock and raspy from smoke. "Who are you? You're not on Team Blaze's roster."
Mei slid her daggers into her hip sheaths with a crisp, metallic clack. She met his gaze dead-on, her heart steadying as she looked at his living, breathing face—no blood spilling from his chest, no ash in his eyes.
A razor-thin, dangerous smirk touched her lips.
"Consider me your unscheduled emergency union representative, Vice-Captain," Mei said, her eyes flashing with wild, protective fire. "And I'm here to make sure you actually survive your shift."
