Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 1 : Beyond the Blueprint
Damp stone. Stagnant rot. The iron reek of hot blood.
Drip.
A single drop struck the flags, cold and heavy.
Drip.
Mei Nguy froze. Her pulse slammed against her throat like a trapped bird, every sense dialled to absolute crisis. Leather bit into her palm as her fingers locked around her sword hilt. Dark eyes slashed through the gloom, tracking the twitches of shadows that shouldn't be moving.
She knew this hell down to the marrow—eleven agonizing hours spent bleeding out in her first life after Team Shadow drove a blade into her spine. She could still taste the warm iron choking her lungs as the dark took her.
Time had snapped backward, dumping her gasping into her younger skin. She was supposed to hold all the cards: every trap, every dead end, every dirty trick Ethan and Fei would throw at her.
Twenty paces ahead, certainty shattered.
A barefoot girl in a white dress stood under the archway, matted hair dripping pond-scum moisture. No kid had ever been in this dungeon before.
The girl's head jerked up with a sick, wet POP. Half her face was missing—raw gray bone flickering like broken glass, shedding black ash onto her collarbone. Beneath the empty socket stared a single, monstrous, blood-red eye.
No killing intent. No strike coil. Worse.
The girl's pale hand shot out, pointing frantically behind Mei.
Don't turn. Turning is dying.
The girl's jaw split—a horrifying KRRRK of tearing bone. Black tar spilled over her lip, smelling of old graves. Cold frost bit through Mei's boots, pinning her to the stone.
Mei drawn steel. The blade sang in the dead air.
The girl lunged, slamming freezing palms into Mei's chest. The impact set her lungs on fire. Mei dug her heels in, boots skidding through the mud. In the girl's massive eye, there was no malice—only raw, suffocating terror.
SCRAPE.
Heavy iron dragged across granite, spraying yellow sparks into the gloom.
Ethan stepped out of the shadows—six-and-a-half feet of brutalized muscle in dented plates, reeking of sulfur, sweat, and dried gore. Beside him slunk Fei, Team Shadow's dagger specialist, her twin blades dripping dark venom. The exact two monsters who had left Mei to rot in her past timeline.
Mei knew Ethan's reload down to the millisecond, and she knew the lethal rhythm of Fei's blades. But neither was looking at her. Ethan's bloodshot eyes were wide with genuine shock, locked on the ghost.
"...That's new," Ethan rasped, his voice a gravel-thick rattle.
Fei's arrogant smirk faltered, her grip tightening nervously on her hilts. "That wasn't in the briefing."
The girl vanished. Absolute, abrupt nothingness.
Knuckles white on her hilt, Mei's heart hammered against her ribs. Her entire hard-earned timeline had just cracked wide open.
She rammed her blade home with a sharp clack, her back firmly turned toward her future murderers. "Then we move."
She walked. Clack. Clack. Clack.
Ethan's heavy boots and Fei's light, sweeping steps fell into exact, suffocating rhythm behind her.
Mei didn't look back, even as cold sweat trickled down her spine. She surged forward; the footsteps matched. She slowed; they slowed.
Dim, flicking torchlight bled ahead—the temporary Team Shadow staging camp. Mei burst into the light, spinning like a viper to cover her rear.
Empty dark.
The spirit hadn't attacked—it had warned her. Something terrifying enough to make bloodthirsty predators like Ethan and Fei sweat had entered the board.
Her jaw locked. The foresight she had died for was gone, replaced by a blank, lethal void. But panic didn't touch her. It ignited into a vicious, burning thrill.
Her fingers bit into her pommel. Ethan and Fei were right behind her, waiting for the perfect moment to slip a knife between her ribs just like last time. But now, the dungeon itself was changing the rules.
A razor-sharp smile cut across Mei's face, dark eyes hardening to glass as she met Fei's suspicious glare.
"Fine," Mei whispered, silver spatial energy crackling silently around her knuckles. "If the future broke, I'll kill whatever broke it—and I'll kill you two right after."
