Old Madam Han had no intention of letting such a dog-like man inside her house. What if he suddenly went mad? She was so old already and could not afford to get bitten!

"What are you talking about? He is not my grandson-in-law!" Aunt Li’s face flushed red, and she could not help but speak shrilly. What did Old Madam Han mean by these words? She clearly did something nice, and the old woman was losing her temper with her. As a married woman, how long could Han Xuehan stay with the Han family? She had to return sooner or later. It was good enough that her husband had come looking for her; this way, Han Xuehan did not have to worry about lowering her head, and she could easily take a step down. What more did these people want from Qiao Tingyan?

Hearing this, Old Madam Han snorted. "So you also know that he is my grandson-in-law. From the way you were so eager to please him, I thought that he was your grandson-in-law."

"You..." Old Madam Li was speechless. What was this? Usually, when a son-in-law came to visit his wife’s natal home, his in-laws would definitely treat him like their ancestor. Why was the Han family different? Old Madam Han was looking at Qiao Tingyan as if he were her enemy.

Was this the gaze with which one looked at their in-laws?

"Old Han, what is the matter with you? No matter what, Qiao Tingyan is your grandson-in-law; you should invite him inside and have a decent chat with him. So what if your Xuehan had a fight with her husband? The two of them are husband and wife in the end; even if they have some internal conflicts, you should let them solve it on their own." Old Madam Li not only loved gossiping, but she also liked poking her nose in the matters of others.

What was more, she looked down on Old Madam Han in her heart. Both of them were blessed with two sons, but in the end, it was Old Madam Han whose son ended up making it big. While her two sons ended up becoming common fishermen. Fortunately, Han Yichen married that muddleheaded Meng Yunhan, and that was enough to bring peace to her mind.

And when she found out that Han Xuehan’s husband was actually just a pauper, the contempt in her heart turned even greater. So what if the Han family had money? In the end, they were not good at judging the character and backgrounds of their in-laws.

As she spoke, she turned to look at Qiao Tingyan and said to him, "You too, Tingyan. Why are you standing there like a mute? Should you not greet your grandmother-in-law? In the end, she is your elder; even if she is in the wrong, you should treat her with respect! As a junior, how can you be rude to her?"

Qiao Tingyan was quite displeased with Old Madam Han’s attitude. He was still her grandson-in-law; what kind of attitude was she showing to him? However, even though he was upset with her, he continued to smile and politely bowed in front of Old Madam Han. "Grandmother, how are you doing? Is Xuehan inside? Can you call her? Please tell her that I am here to take you back home—"

No sooner had he finished speaking than Old Madam Han raised her hand and smacked the man on his cheek right away.

SLAP.

Qiao Tingyan had never expected that the old woman would slap him straight. By the time he realised what was happening, he was already slapped. His cheek was burning with shame and embarrassment as he raised his hand and touched the slightly swollen cheek that had been slapped by Old Madam Han. This old hag!

"Grandmother, what is the meaning of this? Why did you slap me for no reason?" Qiao Tingyan was so angry that the flesh on his face was tingling. He tried to restrain his temper, but how could he? After being slapped on the face by his in-law for that?

Old Madam Han did not feel scared when she was glared at by her grandson-in-law; if anything, she felt a little satisfied. She sneered at the rotten man. "Did I slap you for no reason? Qiao Tingyan, let me ask you. How did my Xuehan let you down? When you married her, you promised that you would take care of her after you married her. But what did you do? You not only beat her up countless times, but you even made her serve your family like a slave, and I don’t even want to start on what you did just recently."

Old Madam Han did not want to escalate the scene too much lest Han Xuehan wanted to go back home; then it would be problematic if she ended up beating Qiao Tingyan too hard. It was better for her to just give this man a warning and be done with it. Who knows what he might even do to her granddaughter if she were to return with him?

Of course, she would like it if her granddaughter stayed with her, but there was a limit to which Old Madam Han could interfere in Han Xuehan’s life.

"Grandmother, I know that I was wrong." Qiao Tingyan panicked when he saw Old Madam Han bringing up the past feuds one after another. He was worried that the old hag would tell everyone that he even brought a woman home to have a son and immediately rushed to stop her. Though Qiao Tingyan did not feel that he had done anything wrong, he knew that only a few people would agree with him. After all, the matter of borrowing a womb was not something that was widely accepted.

He lowered his head dejectedly and accepted his fault. "I know I shouldn’t have hit Xuehan, and it was all my fault. But we are husband and wife; no matter what we should at least sit down and discuss these matters."
