Fu Mingxue finished eating quickly.

Her stomach finally felt much better.

She then remembered something.

"Oh, right. Did Director Wang end up taking care of the neighbor’s kid?"

Mrs. Fu immediately recounted what had happened that morning.

Fu Mingxue: ...?

’Wait a minute, something feels off here.’

"Mom, are you saying that Cui Meihong had already bought her train ticket in advance, and then after dumping the kid on Director Wang, she just left?"

"I was at the hospital then, wasn’t I? That’s what Wang Xiang from next door said."

Fu Mingxue instantly figured out what was wrong.

She was so angry she had to laugh.

"Mom, I think we’ve been played!"

Mrs. Fu looked at her, confused. "Played? How?"

"Her initial target probably wasn’t us. Of course, it would have been even better for her if we had agreed to watch her child back then. But she probably knows our personalities and was sure we wouldn’t agree to it."

"She put on that whole act just to get Wang Xiang to take her to Director Wang. With an outsider there, it would be harder for Director Wang to refuse. If she had gone by herself, Director Wang definitely wouldn’t have taken her son in."

And since it was Mingxue who had made the suggestion, the whole thing had played right into Cui Meihong’s hands.

If it ever came up, Cui Meihong could just say it was Mingxue’s idea.

Mrs. Fu: ...?

She thought it over, then thought it over again.

Her face immediately darkened.

She gritted her teeth. "So you’re telling me that woman, Cui, has been playing her little tricks on us?"

And to think, she had actually felt quite sorry for Cui Meihong.

’With such a nasty mother-in-law at home, being the young wife in that family must be so pitiful.’

Ha! Turns out the woman is sharper than she looks!

What she hated most in life were insidious, scheming people.

After all, she would never scheme against others herself.

Fu Mingxue looked at her mother. "Alright, Mom, don’t be angry. It’s not worth getting worked up about. We’ll just have less to do with her from now on."

But Mrs. Fu was still fuming. "No wonder Director Wang specifically brought the child over to our house! She must be angry about the suggestion we gave. Back then, weren’t you just making a casual comment?"

Fu Mingxue’s tone was nonchalant.

"Who cares what she thinks! Besides, isn’t Director Wang always the first to meddle in other people’s business? No, I mean, isn’t she the one who loves helping families in the compound resolve their difficulties? Well, someone’s child having no one to look after them is a difficulty, isn’t it?"

She didn’t want to continue the topic. "Mom, I’m heading to the hospital in a bit. I’ll be back late tonight."

"Since you’re not working overtime, you should go. Otherwise, people will start to gossip."

Fu Mingxue: ...?

’What could other people possibly gossip about? Isn’t work important?’

She didn’t rush off, though.

First, she spent some time playing with her two children, and only then did she wheel out her bicycle and head for the hospital.

When Fu Mingxue arrived at the hospital room, Qin Wenhao was the only one there.

Qin Wenhao saw her, his face lighting up with a pleasant surprise. "Honey, what are you doing here? Aren’t you working overtime?"

"Nope. Where’s Comrade Zhao?"

"He just stepped out." Qin Wenhao’s eyes never left Fu Mingxue. "If you’re not working late, you should be at home getting some proper rest. You didn’t need to run all the way over here—"

Fu Mingxue raised an eyebrow. "What, are you not happy to see me? Or do you not want me to come?"

Qin Wenhao immediately replied, "Of course I want to see you. I just feel bad for you, that’s all. You work so hard every day."

Fu Mingxue walked over and sat on the edge of the hospital bed. "How are you doing? Are you feeling any better?"

"Much better." And indeed, the color had returned to Qin Wenhao’s face.
