Fu Mingxue heard the angry roar from next door again.

She was speechless.

’What’s all the fuss about now?’

Just then, a very loud knock came from the door outside.

"Who could that be—I’ll get it." Mrs. Fu got up and went to open the door.

When she opened it, she saw a soldier with an anxious look on his face.

Before she could ask what was the matter, he asked urgently, "Excuse me, is Qin Tuan’s wife here?"

When Mrs. Fu heard he was looking for her daughter, she immediately nodded. "Yes, yes, she is."

Turning her head, she called into the house, "Mingxue, come out here! Someone’s here for you."

Then she turned back to the soldier. "Young man, please come in."

Hearing her mother call that someone was there for her, Fu Mingxue, who had been in the middle of her meal, immediately got up and went out into the courtyard.

She saw the soldier, his face anxious and beaded with sweat.

A sense of dread washed over her.

"Ma’am, please come with me to the hospital right away. Qin Tuan is in the hospital undergoing emergency treatment."

At the soldier’s words, the color drained completely from Fu Mingxue’s face.

Mrs. Fu was also stunned, her face etched with worry. "Wenhao’s been hurt? Is it serious?"

"They’re working on him now. Ma’am, please come with me to the hospital immediately."

The soldier said nothing more.

Fu Mingxue managed to steady her nerves.

She nodded sharply. "Let’s go."

Mrs. Fu wanted to follow.

Fu Mingxue stopped her. "Mom, you stay home and look after the children. I’ll go to the hospital."

She hurried out of the courtyard.

A car was waiting at the gate.

Fu Mingxue quickly got in.

Once she was settled, the soldier got into the driver’s seat and sped away.

Mrs. Fu watched the car disappear into the distance, her heart tight with worry.

’Oh, heavens, please protect my son-in-law. See him safely through this, let him be alright.’

’If something were to really happen to him, she didn’t know what she would do.’

"Auntie, what’s going on? Did something happen to Qin Tuan?" Wang Xiang from next door had heard the commotion, as she lived so close.

Mrs. Fu shook her head. "It’s nothing serious, he was just injured. My daughter has gone to the hospital."

"Ah, injured?" Wang Xiang immediately realized her tone was inappropriate and quickly added, "Auntie, don’t you worry. It’s inevitable they get a little banged up on missions. I’m sure he’ll be fine."

"Mm." Mrs. Fu wasn’t in the mood for small talk. "The two children are eating. I should go check on them."

With that, she turned and went back into the courtyard.

As the main gate closed, it shut out the prying eyes that the commotion had drawn.

Before long, news that Qin Wenhao was seriously injured had spread throughout the entire military family compound.

As the rumor spread, it even morphed into whispers that Qin Wenhao was on the verge of death—

Of course, Mrs. Hao heard these rumors as well.

She was absolutely thrilled.

She started gossiping with an old crony of hers. "That Qin Tuan getting hurt... it has to be because of that mother and daughter. They’re a jinx! Look, the old one’s husband died because of her bad luck, and now isn’t the daughter doing the same to her own man?"

"I’m telling you, you have to marry a woman who brings good fortune. If you marry an unlucky one, you’ll lose your money and your life."

"How else do you explain it? People don’t just drop dead in other families, but it happens in hers!"

The other old woman was so startled by her words that she quickly glanced around. Seeing no one, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.

She immediately tried to quiet Mrs. Hao. "You shouldn’t be saying such things. You can’t talk like that here in the family compound. Besides, Qin Tuan isn’t dead, he’s just injured."

"There’ll be hell to pay if someone hears you."

Mrs. Hao grumbled sheepishly, "I’m only telling you, aren’t I? It’s not like I’m going to tell anyone else. Besides, that mother and daughter are jinxes. I’m not wrong about that."

"Alright, that’s enough of that. You should hurry on home!" The other woman was starting to wish she’d never started this conversation.

’How can she just run her mouth like that, saying whatever she wants?’
