Chapter 52: Chapter 52 : The Predator Beyond the System

Ash continued staring toward the distant mountains long after the enormous creature had disappeared into the storm.

The ancient observatory had fallen silent again, but the silence no longer felt peaceful. A strange pressure seemed to remain in the air, as though the mountains themselves had witnessed something they had not seen for thousands of years. The Moonfang stood several steps away, its dark-silver fur moving gently in the cold wind that entered through the broken opening of the observatory.

Aren was still watching the horizon.

Kael, however, had not moved.

The elderly Silver Lynx’s expression remained unusually grim as he stared at the ancient map beneath his paws. The migration symbols, the forgotten continents and the appearance of a creature that even the System could not identify had completely changed the meaning of everything they had discovered.

Ash should have been frightened.

He should have been thinking about returning to the Blackfang settlement, warning the elders and preparing for whatever disaster might come next.

Instead, something strange was happening inside him.

He felt excited.

The feeling was not the wild excitement of a reckless cub that had forgotten the danger surrounding him. It was deeper than that. It was the excitement of someone who had just discovered that the world was much larger than he had ever imagined.

For most of his life, Ash had been surrounded by limits.

The Blackfang territory had been a limit.

The Frostfang Mountains had been a limit.

The strongest beasts he knew had been a limit.

Even the Dreadborn, terrifying as they were, had eventually become something Ash could understand. They could be studied. Their movements could be predicted. Their attacks could be analyzed.

But that creature was different.

It existed beyond his understanding.

And for the first time, Ash realized that there was still an enormous distance between what he was and what he could become.

His eyes slowly brightened.

A small smile appeared across his face.

Aren noticed immediately.

The Silver Lynx turned toward him with confusion. "Why are you smiling?"

Ash looked back toward the enormous tracks disappearing into the snowy valley. His tail moved slowly behind him as his mind replayed the sight of the creature rising above the snow.

"Because I think I’ve finally found something worth chasing."

Aren stared at him.

Kael slowly turned his head.

Neither of them seemed to know how to respond.

Aren eventually stepped closer. "That thing was taller than an Ice Bear."

"I know."

"Its footsteps caused an avalanche."

"I saw it."

"The Moonfang was afraid of it."

Ash glanced toward the mysterious predator.

"I noticed that too."

Aren’s ears flattened slightly. "And even your System couldn’t identify it."

Ash’s smile remained.

"Exactly."

Aren stared at him for several seconds before shaking his head. "You really are strange."

Ash did not disagree.

He looked once more toward the mountains and felt something inside his chest burning with determination.

"I don’t want to attack it blindly," he said. "But if something is stronger than me, shouldn’t I learn how to defeat it?"

Aren’s expression became serious.

"There is a difference between becoming stronger and throwing yourself into the jaws of something that could crush you without noticing."

Ash nodded.

"I know."

His voice was calm.

"I’m not going to chase it today."

That answer surprised Aren.

Ash looked down at the black relic hanging against his chest.

"I’m going to understand it first."

Before Aren could respond, the relic suddenly became hot.

Ash’s expression changed.

The familiar blue light surrounding the black stone vanished.

A different color appeared.

Dark crimson.

Then gold.

The air around Ash seemed to tighten.

A sharp sound echoed through the observatory.

DING!

Ash froze.

Kael’s ears immediately rose.

The System interface appeared before Ash’s eyes.

But this time, it was completely different.

The familiar blue interface had disappeared.

A dark crimson window surrounded by thin golden markings floated before him.

Ash’s heartbeat accelerated.

The first message appeared.

[HIGH-PRIORITY TASK DETECTED.]

Ash stared.

A second message appeared beneath it.

[Classification: High Priority.]

His ears slowly lifted.

Then came the third message.

[Target: Unknown Species.]

Ash’s eyes widened.

His gaze instinctively moved toward the mountains.

The System was talking about the enormous creature.

Another notification appeared.

[Ancient Entity Detected.]

Ash swallowed.

The next message took several seconds to appear.

When it finally did, even Ash stopped breathing for a moment.

[HIGH-PRIORITY TASK]

[Objective: Devour the Unknown Species.]

Ash stared at the words.

The system window remained motionless.

He read them once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Aren noticed the strange expression on Ash’s face. "What happened?"

Ash didn’t answer.

Another line appeared.

[Requirement: Successfully hunt and consume the unidentified ancient entity.]

Ash’s eyes narrowed.

Then came the next message.

[Failure: Unknown.]

Kael’s face changed.

The old Silver Lynx could not see the System itself, but he could see Ash’s reaction.

"What did it show you?"

Ash finally looked toward him.

"The System wants me to hunt that creature."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"It wants you to what?"

"Devour it."

Silence fell.

Aren looked at Ash as though he had suddenly grown another head.

"You cannot be serious."

Ash looked back toward the mountains.

"I wish I were joking."

Another notification appeared.

[Reward: ?????]

Ash’s excitement disappeared for a moment.

He stared at the five question marks.

"What?"

He waited.

Nothing happened.

Ash frowned.

"What is the reward?"

The System remained silent.

He tried again.

"System, display the reward."

No response.

Ash’s expression became increasingly confused.

"System?"

The interface flickered once.

Then another message appeared.

[Reward information is currently unavailable.]

Ash’s eyes widened.

That had never happened before.

Every quest he had received in the past had come with a reward that could be understood. Sometimes it had been a skill, sometimes Bloodline Points, sometimes an ability or an ancient item.

But this was different.

The System itself didn’t know.

Or perhaps it knew but refused to tell him.

Ash stared at the question marks.

A strange thrill moved through him.

"What kind of reward can’t even you display?"

The interface remained silent.

Then a smaller notification appeared beneath the task.

[Warning: Target exists outside current database authority.]

Ash stopped smiling.

He read the message carefully.

Outside current database authority.

The words were more disturbing than the unknown creature itself.

Until now, Ash had unconsciously believed that his System understood this world.

It had identified species.

It had recognized ancient relics.

It had detected the Guardian.

It had analyzed the Dreadborn.

It had even interpreted fragments of ancient history.

But now the System had encountered something beyond its own database.

Ash’s eyes narrowed.

"System, identify target."

The response appeared immediately.

[Target Classification: Unknown.]

Ash tried again.

"Origin?"

[Unknown.]

"Evolutionary lineage?"

[Unknown.]

"Threat level?"

The interface flickered.

[Unable to determine.]

Ash stared.

Then one final recommendation appeared.

[Recommended Action: Devour.]

A slow grin returned to Ash’s face.

Kael noticed it.

The old Silver Lynx’s expression became increasingly concerned.

"You are enjoying this."

Ash looked at him.

"Maybe a little."

"Ash."

Kael’s voice was firm.

"That creature may be beyond anything we have ever encountered."

Ash nodded.

"I know."

"You don’t understand what you’re dealing with."

"I know that too."

"Then why are you smiling?"

Ash looked toward the snowy horizon.

"Because for the first time, I don’t know where my limit is."

Kael fell silent.

Ash continued speaking quietly.

"I’ve spent so long trying to survive that I started thinking survival was the same thing as strength. It isn’t."

He touched the relic against his chest.

"Every time I thought I understood this world, something else appeared. The Dreadborn. The Guardian. The covenant. The Primordials."

His eyes hardened.

"And now this."

Aren looked at him carefully.

Ash wasn’t speaking like a cub hungry for battle.

He was speaking like someone who had finally discovered how much farther he had to go.

Kael’s expression softened slightly, but his concern remained.

"Strength without wisdom will only shorten your life."

Ash nodded.

"Then I’ll gain wisdom too."

Before Kael could answer, the Moonfang moved.

The mysterious predator stepped away from the wall and approached Ash.

Its paws made almost no sound against the ancient stone.

Aren immediately became alert.

But the Moonfang did not attack.

It stopped in front of Ash and looked directly into his eyes.

Ash remained still.

The relic began glowing.

The Moonfang’s markings responded immediately.

Thin silver-blue patterns appeared around its eyes.

The System activated again.

[Ancient Bloodline Resonance Increasing.]

Ash’s expression changed.

Another notification appeared.

[Moonfang Recognition Response: Positive.]

The Moonfang slowly lowered its head toward the relic.

Ash watched carefully.

Then the System displayed another message.

[Warning: Moonfang possesses information regarding target.]

Ash’s eyes widened.

"You know what that creature is?"

The Moonfang did not answer.

Of course, it couldn’t.

But its eyes shifted toward the northern mountains.

Then back toward Ash.

Aren understood the gesture too.

"It knows where it went."

Ash’s excitement returned.

He looked toward the mountains.

"Then perhaps it can lead us to it."

The Moonfang’s ears moved.

For a brief moment, its expression seemed almost human.

Not fear.

Not hostility.

Recognition.

Then it turned toward the northern passage.

Ash followed its gaze.

The unknown creature was gone.

But its tracks remained.

And now Ash had a reason to follow them.

Not immediately.

Not recklessly.

But eventually.

He would hunt it.

He would discover what it was.

And if the System demanded that he devour it, Ash intended to find out exactly why.
