Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 51 : The Unknown Species
Chapter 51: Chapter 51 : The Unknown Species
They left the observatory quickly.
Snow whipped across the mountains as they climbed toward the outer ridge. The wind had intensified without warning, dragging loose powder across the cliffs and turning the distant valley into a white haze.
The Moonfang moved ahead of them.
It did not run.
It walked with deliberate caution, repeatedly stopping to listen.
Ash followed closely behind.
The creature had not attacked them, but its behavior had changed completely. Every few moments it looked toward the northern horizon, as though something was approaching from beyond the mountains.
Aren’s ears remained raised.
"I can hear something."
Ash listened.
At first, there was nothing.
Then the ground vibrated.
A low tremor traveled through the frozen earth.
Snow slipped from the cliffs.
Far across the valley, a cloud of powder rose into the air.
Something was moving.
Ash narrowed his eyes.
A huge shape emerged through the snowfall.
His first thought was simple.
Ice Bear.
The creature was enormous, pale and broad.
But then it stood.
And kept standing.
Ash’s mouth slowly opened.
The creature rose far beyond the height of any Ice Bear he had ever seen. Its four primary legs were thick enough to resemble tree trunks, while two smaller limbs emerged near its chest, moving with strange precision.
Its body was covered in overlapping pale scales that resembled natural armor.
Its neck was long and heavily muscled.
Its head was unlike anything Ash had ever encountered.
The front of its face possessed the rough shape of a wolf, but the jaw and ridges around its skull resembled an ancient reptile.
Two dark horns curved backward from the top of its head.
Its eyes were small compared with its enormous body.
Yet even from this distance, Ash could see that they were watching the surrounding landscape.
The creature took another step.
The valley shook.
A section of snow collapsed from a nearby slope.
Ash instinctively backed away.
A system window appeared.
[Unknown Species Detected.]
Ash stared.
Another message appeared.
[Identification: Failed.]
His heart began beating faster.
[Threat Classification: Unable to Determine.]
Ash’s ears rose.
Then the final message appeared.
[Known Species Database: No Match.]
For several seconds, Ash simply stared at the glowing text.
The system had identified wolves.
Bears.
Lynxes.
Dreadborn.
Ancient relics.
Guardians.
It had even recognized bloodline energy and ancient covenants.
But now it had nothing.
No name.
No classification.
No estimate.
Nothing.
Ash looked toward Kael.
"Have you ever seen something like that?"
Kael did not answer.
"Aren?"
The Silver Lynx shook his head.
The Moonfang was already hiding behind a large rock.
That frightened Ash more than the creature itself.
Kael noticed.
"The Moonfang is hiding."
Ash looked at him.
"You said they were legendary predators."
"They are."
"Then what is that thing?"
Kael’s gaze remained fixed on the enormous creature crossing the valley.
"I don’t know."
The words sounded almost unnatural coming from him.
Kael had spent decades studying the ancient history of the Silver Lynxes. He knew forgotten symbols, extinct species, lost territories and stories that had disappeared from every other surviving record.
Yet now he stood completely uncertain.
The enormous creature continued walking.
It did not attack.
It did not even seem interested in them.
It simply crossed the valley.
Each step pushed snow outward.
The creature’s tail dragged a deep line through the frozen ground.
Ash watched it disappear slowly into the northern storm.
Only after the creature was several hundred meters away did the Moonfang cautiously emerge from hiding.
Kael stared at the creature’s disappearing silhouette.
"There are records."
Ash turned toward him.
"About that species?"
"Not specifically."
Kael took a slow breath.
"About creatures like it."
He pointed toward the ancient mountains.
"Before the First Awakening, before the Blackfang Pack formed its first territory, before the Silver Lynxes recorded their earliest history, there were creatures that already ruled these lands."
Ash remained silent.
"They were called Primordials."
The word seemed to settle over the mountains.
"Primordials?"
Kael nodded.
"Ancient beasts that existed before the current age. Some were predators. Some were herbivores. Some may have been intelligent. Their bodies, bloodlines and abilities were unlike anything most modern species possess."
Aren stepped closer.
"Are they extinct?"
"Some are."
Kael looked toward the northern horizon.
"Some may still exist."
Ash’s eyes followed the direction.
"And that creature?"
Kael shook his head.
"I don’t know whether it is a Primordial."
The answer was frustrating.
"But if it is," Kael continued, "then we have just witnessed something that should not exist according to every surviving record."
Ash looked down at his relic.
The black stone was glowing faintly.
He remembered the enormous eyes beneath the northern mountain.
He remembered the voice from the ancient vision.
He remembered the warning.
If the seal fails, the Dreadborn will not be the ones who awaken.
Perhaps the creature they had just seen was not connected to that warning.
Or perhaps it was.
Ash did not know.
And for the first time, uncertainty felt more frightening than any enemy he had actually fought.
Kael returned toward the observatory.
"Come."
Ash followed.
Inside the ancient chamber, Kael stood beside the map again.
"The world is much older than the histories we inherited."
His paw moved across Frostfang.
"The Blackfangs think this continent is their entire world because this is where their ancestors survived."
He moved toward the Verdant Continent.
"The Verdant species have their own histories."
Then Emberfall.
"Emberfall has creatures that evolved under conditions our species could never survive."
Then the Abyssal waters.
"And the oceans have beings that may never even see the surface."
Finally, his paw stopped over the Forgotten Continent.
"And somewhere beyond all of them is a land where nobody knows what survived."
Ash stared at the map.
"Why didn’t the Blackfangs know about these continents?"
Kael looked at him.
"Because knowledge dies when nobody carries it forward."
He paused.
"Your ancestors were concerned with survival. Winters. Territory. Predators. Food. Rival packs. When generations spend their entire lives fighting to survive one season, the rest of the world becomes a story."
Ash lowered his head.
That explanation felt painfully understandable.
He thought about the Blackfang settlement.
The cubs.
The hunters.
The families rebuilding after the First Great Crisis.
They were not explorers.
They were survivors.
Yet now the world had begun moving around them.
The Guardian was awakening.
The Dreadborn had returned.
Aren’s tribe had been hiding for generations.
Ancient seals were weakening.
And now creatures from unknown territories were appearing in their mountains.
Ash looked at Kael.
"If these continents are real, why haven’t they come here before?"
Kael’s expression became uneasy.
"We don’t know."
The Moonfang suddenly raised its head.
Its ears pointed toward the ocean.
Ash noticed.
"What is it hearing?"
Kael looked toward the eastern horizon.
Then his face slowly changed.
He moved toward a smaller section of the ancient map.
There, beneath the ocean markings, several symbols had been carved.
Ash had noticed them earlier but assumed they were decorative.
Now Kael looked terrified.
"What does that symbol mean?"
Kael did not answer.
Ash stepped closer.
"Kael?"
The old Silver Lynx finally spoke.
"It means migration."
Ash frowned.
"Migration?"
Kael nodded.
"Not seasonal migration."
His voice was almost a whisper.
"Ancient migration."
A distant rumble rolled across the mountains.
Then the ocean moved.
From the high cliffs, Ash could see the distant waters.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then a massive dark shape passed beneath the surface.
It was so enormous that the water above it rose like a moving hill.
Ash froze.
A second shadow followed.
Then a third.
The Moonfang stared toward the sea.
Aren stepped beside Ash.
"What are those?"
Kael’s face had lost its color.
"I don’t know."
Ash looked toward him.
"You said those symbols meant migration."
"They do."
"Then what is migrating?"
Kael slowly looked back toward the ancient map.
"The ancient beasts."
The system activated.
[Global Species Migration Detected.]
Ash’s heart began pounding.
[Multiple Apex-Level Entities Changing Territories.]
[Cause: Unknown.]
The message remained for several seconds.
Then another appeared.
[Frostfang Continent has entered an Ancient Migration Route.]
Ash stared.
He read the sentence again.
The enormous creature in the valley.
The tremors.
The strange ocean shadows.
The Moonfang’s fear.
None of it was random.
They were connected.
The giant creature had not come to hunt them.
It had not come for the Blackfang Pack.
It had not even noticed Ash.
It had simply been traveling.
Ash looked toward the northern valley.
The creature was already disappearing beyond the mountains.
"If that thing was only passing through..."
His voice faded.
Kael finished the thought.
"Then it may not be the only one."
Silence filled the observatory.
Ash looked again at the map.
The world that had once seemed like a frozen wilderness now looked completely different.
The continents were enormous.
The oceans were deeper than he could imagine.
There were beasts he had never seen.
Civilizations he had never heard of.
Species that had vanished from history.
And somewhere beyond the horizon were creatures powerful enough to make a Moonfang hide.
Ash suddenly understood something.
Becoming Alpha of the Blackfangs would not make him master of this world.
It would barely make him strong enough to enter it.
A soft movement caught his attention.
The Moonfang had approached.
It stood several steps away.
Its glowing eyes were fixed on him.
Ash slowly lowered himself so that he would not appear threatening.
The creature moved closer.
One step.
Then another.
Aren watched silently.
Kael did not interfere.
The Moonfang stopped directly in front of Ash.
The black relic began glowing.
Blue light spread across the ancient stone.
The Moonfang’s markings illuminated in response.
Ash felt a strange warmth move through his chest.
The creature lowered its head.
Not submission.
Not obedience.
Something different.
Recognition.
Ash could feel it.
The Moonfang knew something about the relic.
Perhaps it knew something about the ancient bloodline.
Perhaps it remembered something that even the Silver Lynxes had forgotten.
But before Ash could reach toward it, the system appeared again.
[Unknown Species Interaction Detected.]
[Ancient Bloodline Resonance: Confirmed.]
Ash’s eyes widened.
A final warning appeared beneath the others.
[Warning: Something has noticed the heir.]
The blue light disappeared.
The Moonfang lifted its head.
Far beyond the mountains, something roared.
The sound carried across the frozen horizon.
Ash stared toward the distant wilderness.
For most of his life, the world had been a collection of forests, mountains, rivers and territories.
He had thought the greatest dangers were the predators he could see.
Then came the Guardian.
The Dreadborn.
The ancient seal.
The mysterious entity beneath the mountains.
Now he knew the truth was far larger.
Frostfang was not the center of the world.
It was only one corner of it.
And beyond the frozen horizon waited continents filled with beasts that had evolved under different skies, oceans hiding creatures larger than mountains, ancient civilizations buried beneath forgotten lands, and species whose names did not exist inside his system.
Ash looked once more at the Moonfang.
The mysterious predator remained beside him, silent and watchful.
For the first time, Ash no longer felt that the world was simply a frozen wilderness he had to survive.
It felt enormous.
Ancient.
Unpredictable.
And very much alive.
Somewhere beyond the horizon, something had begun to move.
And whatever it was, the ancient world had finally noticed him.
