Chapter 37: Chapter 37 : The Ruins Beneath the Snow

Morning arrived quietly over the hidden valley, bringing with it another layer of fresh snow.

The settlement looked peaceful from a distance, with smoke rising from the dens and hunters moving between the storage shelters, but Ash felt none of that peace.

He had barely slept.

Elder Mira’s words from the previous evening continued circling through his thoughts, especially the statement that the strange symbol had existed before the first Blackfang Alpha.

Ash sat outside his den with the black stone resting between his paws. The surface looked ordinary again, dark and smooth beneath the pale morning light.

Yet Ash knew there was something hidden inside it. He had seen the blue symbol appear, felt the strange warmth of the pendant, and witnessed the system identify a connection to the Blackfang ancestral legacy.

The questions were becoming impossible to ignore.

If the symbol belonged to a time before the Blackfang Pack had even existed, then who had created it? Why did a Silver Lynx possess a matching relic? And why had Elder Mira looked frightened when she recognized it?

Ash eventually stood.

He knew where he needed to go.

The northern forest was quiet when he reached its edge. Snow covered the familiar trail, but Ash soon noticed a set of fresh Silver Lynx tracks leading between the trees. He followed them carefully until the forest opened into a small clearing.

Aren stood on the opposite side.

The young lynx watched Ash approach but did not retreat.

Ash smiled.

"You came back."

Aren tilted his head.

Ash had slowly learned that the lynx understood certain words, particularly his name. Their communication was still primitive, built mostly from gestures, expressions, and repeated sounds, but the distance between them had already begun to disappear.

Aren turned and started walking.

Ash followed.

They traveled farther north than they had the previous day, climbing through a narrow passage between two enormous rocks. The opening was almost completely hidden by snow and tangled roots, and Ash would never have noticed it without Aren guiding him.

Beyond the passage was a steep slope.

Aren descended first.

Ash followed carefully.

At the bottom, they reached the ruins of the old Silver Lynx settlement.

Aren walked past the collapsed dens without stopping.

He continued toward the far end of the valley, where a wall of stone rose from beneath the snow.

There was no visible entrance.

Aren placed one paw against the wall.

Then he looked at Ash.

Ash approached.

"Is there something here?"

Aren moved a layer of snow aside.

A narrow crack appeared.

Ash crouched and looked inside.

Cold air flowed through the opening.

Aren pushed against a loose stone.

The rock shifted.

A dark passage opened beneath them.

Ash stared into the darkness.

"You’ve been here before."

Aren nodded.

Together, they entered.

The passage descended gradually into the earth.

The temperature became strangely mild the deeper they went, despite the winter outside. Ash could hear water dripping somewhere in the darkness. Their footsteps echoed softly against the ancient stone.

After several minutes, the passage opened into a large underground chamber.

Ash stopped.

The walls were covered in paintings.

Unlike the faded carvings in the ruins above, these images were surprisingly well preserved.

The first painting showed a vast forest beneath a brilliant celestial tree.

Wolves stood beneath its branches.

Silver Lynxes occupied the rocky slopes.

Ice Bears were depicted near frozen rivers.

Great Eagles flew above the mountains.

Other creatures stood among them, some familiar and others completely unknown.

Ash stepped closer.

"They lived together."

Aren remained silent.

Ash continued studying the walls.

The different species weren’t separated.

They were shown hunting together, traveling together, and guarding what appeared to be the same sacred location.

At the center of the largest painting stood an enormous figure.

Ash couldn’t identify its species.

Its body was surrounded by blue lines, while several smaller creatures stood around it.

But something was wrong.

The central figure had been deliberately damaged.

Someone had scratched away the face and much of the body.

The stone beneath the painting had been gouged deeply.

Ash ran a paw along the marks.

"This wasn’t natural."

Aren approached.

His expression changed.

He seemed to recognize the damage.

Ash looked at him.

"You’ve seen this before?"

Aren didn’t answer.

Instead, he moved toward another section of the wall.

There, several Silver Lynxes were shown standing before the same celestial tree.

One of them carried a pendant.

Ash immediately recognized the shape.

It was identical to the relic Aren had given him.

Ash’s heart began beating faster.

He pulled the pendant from beneath his fur.

The symbol on it remained dark.

Then Aren removed his own broken piece.

The two relics were close enough to touch.

The moment they came together, blue light erupted across the chamber.

Ash stumbled backward.

The ancient paintings illuminated one after another.

Lines that had been invisible for centuries suddenly appeared beneath the dust.

Aren stepped away, but Ash couldn’t move.

The light became brighter.

Then the chamber disappeared.

Ash found himself standing somewhere else.

He was no longer inside the cave.

Snow covered an enormous battlefield.

The sky was dark.

Mountains surrounded the valley, but they looked different from the mountains he knew.

They were taller.

Younger.

Unbroken.

In front of him stood a massive black-furred wolf.

The wolf wore no crown, yet Ash somehow knew he was a leader.

Beside him stood a Silver Lynx with silver-white fur and bright amber eyes.

The two creatures stood shoulder to shoulder.

They weren’t enemies.

They were allies.

Behind them stretched an army unlike anything Ash had ever imagined.

Blackfang wolves stood beside Silver Lynxes.

Ice Bears formed defensive lines along the frozen river.

Great Eagles circled above.

Other ancient beasts moved between them.

Ash could barely breathe.

This was not a legend.

It was a memory.

The ancient wolf turned toward the mountains.

Something was coming.

The ground began shaking.

A crack opened between the mountains.

Darkness emerged from beneath the earth.

Ash couldn’t see the creature clearly.

Its enormous body remained hidden beneath clouds of dust and snow.

Only portions of it appeared.

A massive limb.

A long ridge of armor.

Eyes that glowed faintly beneath the darkness.

The ancient alliance charged.

Wolves attacked from the front.

Silver Lynxes moved along the creature’s flanks.

Ice Bears struck the ground with enormous force.

Eagles descended from above.

The battle shook the mountains.

Ash watched helplessly.

He wanted to move.

He couldn’t.

The enormous creature released a sound that seemed to come from beneath the earth itself.

The vision suddenly fractured.

Ash saw the celestial tree.

He saw the ancient wolf.

He saw the Silver Lynx leader.

Then everything disappeared.

Ash collapsed.

---

When he opened his eyes, Aren was beside him.

The lynx was pressing his paw against Ash’s shoulder.

Ash took several breaths before sitting upright.

His head hurt.

His body felt strangely heavy.

The chamber had returned to normal.

The paintings were dark again.

Only the two relics remained faintly warm.

Ash stared at the pendant.

"That wasn’t a story."

Aren watched him.

Ash shook his head.

"It was a memory."

He didn’t know whether Aren understood.

But the lynx seemed to sense the seriousness of what had happened.

Aren moved toward another wall.

He touched a carving depicting several Silver Lynxes.

Then he pointed toward the northern mountains.

Then he pointed toward himself.

Ash understood.

Aren’s people had known about this place.

They had known about the ancient alliance.

Perhaps they had been guarding the ruins for generations.

Ash followed Aren’s gesture.

Then he pointed toward the damaged central figure.

Aren’s expression immediately darkened.

He looked away.

Ash didn’t press him.

Instead, he sat beside him.

For several moments, neither spoke.

The silence between them was no longer uncomfortable.

It felt like understanding.

---

Part 2 – The Survivor’s Truth

Aren eventually began communicating through gestures.

He pointed toward the northern mountains again.

Then toward the ruined settlement.

He touched his chest.

Then he raised one paw several times, indicating many individuals.

Ash understood.

There had once been many Silver Lynxes.

Aren was not simply a wanderer.

He had belonged to a tribe.

Aren then lowered his head and pointed toward the ground.

He moved one paw across the snow as if showing tracks.

Then he suddenly raised his head and imitated something enormous with both paws.

Ash recognized the meaning immediately.

The creature.

Aren nodded.

He pointed toward several empty places in the snow.

One by one, he lowered his paw.

Ash felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather.

People had disappeared.

Aren’s tribe had begun losing members.

Ash touched the scar on Aren’s shoulder.

Aren looked at it.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

Then he slowly nodded.

The scar had come from the creature.

Ash finally understood why Aren reacted with such fear whenever the enormous predator appeared.

He had not simply seen it.

He had survived it.

Aren pointed toward the ruins.

Then toward the mountains.

Then he made a gesture of running.

His tribe had fled.

Ash imagined the scene.

A group of Silver Lynxes abandoning their ancestral home beneath the cover of darkness, carrying whatever they could while something ancient hunted them through the mountains.

He wondered how many had escaped.

Aren’s expression answered him.

Not many.

Perhaps none besides him.

Ash looked down.

He remembered the Blackfang survivors leaving Moonveil.

He remembered cubs being carried through the ancestral passage.

He remembered Elder Mira telling them that a home was not simply land.

Aren had lost his home too.

Maybe that was why Ash had trusted him so quickly.

They were different species.

But they carried the same wound.

"You don’t have to tell me everything," Ash said quietly.

Aren looked at him.

Ash placed one paw over his own chest.

Then he pointed toward Aren.

"We’ll find out."

Aren stared at him.

Ash pointed toward the ruins.

Then toward the mountains.

Then toward himself and Aren.

Together.

Aren remained still for several seconds.

Then he lowered his head.

He touched his forehead against Ash’s.

The gesture was small.

But Ash understood it.

It was trust.

Not complete trust.

Not yet.

But enough.

Enough to continue walking together.

Aren turned toward the chamber’s far wall.

He moved several loose stones aside.

Behind them was a narrow opening.

Ash looked inside.

A small stone tablet rested within the darkness.

The same celestial tree had been carved into its surface.

But beneath the tree was another symbol.

A massive claw surrounded a smaller blue mark.

Ash’s expression tightened.

The symbol seemed familiar.

He touched it.

The system appeared.

Ancient Historical Record Detected.

Blackfang–Silver Lynx Alliance: Confirmed.

Historical Event: The First Awakening.

Data Corrupted.

Warning: Do Not Awaken the Guardian.

Ash froze.

Aren stared at him.

"Guardian?"

Ash didn’t know whether the lynx understood the word.

He looked at the carving.

Something about the warning disturbed him.

The system had never used language like this before.

It wasn’t telling him to become stronger.

It wasn’t giving him an objective.

It was warning him.

Before Ash could think further, the ground moved.

The entire chamber shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

A stone struck the ground beside Ash.

Aren immediately backed away.

Another tremor followed.

Then came the sound.

BOOM.

Ash’s heart stopped.

A second impact traveled through the earth.

BOOM.

Aren’s ears flattened.

The third strike came harder than the first two.

BOOM.

The sound was no longer distant.

It was beneath them.

Ash looked at the floor.

A thin crack appeared across the stone.

Blue light began shining through it.

Aren grabbed Ash’s fur.

They moved toward the exit.

The crack widened.

Stone fractured.

Ash looked down.

Something was moving below.

He couldn’t see its body.

Only darkness.

And within that darkness, something enormous shifted.

Aren pulled harder.

They ran.

---

At the same time, far away in the Blackfang settlement, Rowan returned from the western forest.

His expression immediately told Elder Mira that something was wrong.

"How many?" she asked.

Rowan looked toward the hunters behind him.

"Four sets of tracks."

"Predators?"

"No."

He paused.

"Something much larger."

Elder Mira stepped closer.

Rowan described the footprints.

The enormous depth.

The strange claw arrangement.

The direction.

But most importantly, the trail didn’t wander.

It followed an old path through the valley.

A path that led toward the Frostfang Mountains.

And beyond them stood the ruins of Moonveil.

Elder Mira’s expression hardened.

"How old was the trail?"

"Fresh."

"How fresh?"

"Less than a day."

Silence spread through the group.

One of the younger hunters asked whether they should send a warning party.

Elder Mira didn’t answer immediately.

She looked toward the western mountains.

The wolves had entered this valley believing it was a refuge.

Now they were beginning to understand that the land had never truly been empty.

It had belonged to something long before they arrived.

Rowan lowered his voice.

"Mira, you recognize the tracks."

She looked at him.

"I recognize the pattern."

"From where?"

"An old record."

Rowan’s expression changed.

"The records from Moonveil?"

Elder Mira nodded.

"The ones that were supposed to remain forgotten."

---

Back beneath the northern ruins, Ash and Aren reached the narrow passage.

The ground shook again.

The opening behind them collapsed partially.

Ash squeezed through.

Aren followed.

They climbed toward the surface as quickly as they could.

Snow poured through the cracks above them.

Ash slipped once.

Aren caught him.

They continued upward.

When they finally emerged from the hidden cave, the entire valley seemed strangely quiet.

Ash turned.

Nothing followed.

The entrance remained hidden beneath the snow.

For a moment, everything appeared normal.

Then the mountain behind them moved.

Not enough to cause an avalanche.

Just enough to remind them that something beneath it was awake.

Aren stared toward the distant peaks.

His expression was filled with fear.

Ash stood beside him.

"What is it?"

Aren didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

His eyes remained fixed on the mountains.

Ash looked in the same direction.

Far beyond the trees, a faint blue glow appeared beneath the clouds.

It lasted only a few seconds.

Then disappeared.

Ash touched the pendant.

The system remained silent.

That silence frightened him more than another warning would have.

He and Aren began their journey back toward the settlement.

Neither spoke.

There were too many questions.

The ancient alliance.

The lost Silver Lynx tribe.

The First Awakening.

The Guardian.

And the creature that had begun moving through the valley.

Yet one thing had become clear.

The creature wasn’t wandering randomly.

It was following a route that existed long before the Blackfang Pack entered the valley.

A route that connected the northern ruins to Moonveil.

And whatever lay beneath those mountains had begun moving again.

---

Night eventually fell over the valley.

Ash returned to the settlement exhausted.

Elder Mira immediately noticed the pendant around his neck.

She walked toward him.

Her eyes settled upon the blue symbol.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked toward the western mountains.

Ash knew she recognized it.

"Mira," he said quietly, "what is the Guardian?"

The elder’s face became pale.

Rowan, who had been standing nearby, immediately turned toward them.

Elder Mira closed her eyes.

"I hoped that name would never return."

Ash waited.

She opened her eyes again.

"The first Blackfangs did not build Moonveil alone."

Ash’s expression changed.

"They worked with other species."

Mira nodded.

"Species that existed before our oldest stories. The Silver Lynxes were among them."

Ash looked toward Aren’s pendant.

"What happened?"

"We don’t know everything."

Her voice became quieter.

"That is why the records were hidden."

Ash looked toward the mountains.

"And the Guardian?"

Elder Mira hesitated.

"We believed it was a protector."

"Protector of what?"

Mira didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly at Ash.

"That is the question I am most afraid of you asking."

---

Far away from the settlement, Aren stood alone on a snowy ridge.

He looked back toward the forest.

Then toward the ruins of his former home.

Then toward the mountains.

The wind moved through his silver fur.

He could smell something unfamiliar.

Ancient.

Cold.

He had smelled it once before.

The night his tribe disappeared.

Aren lowered his head.

For several seconds, he remained completely still.

Then he heard it.

Three enormous knocks.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

His amber eyes widened.

But this time, the sound was different.

It was closer.

Much closer.

Aren looked toward the Blackfang settlement.

He knew what he had to do.

He turned and began running.

---

Beneath Moonveil, the ancient blue crystal suddenly illuminated the entire chamber.

The light traveled across the walls.

Ancient paintings appeared.

The celestial tree.

The wolves.

The Silver Lynxes.

The Ice Bears.

The Eagles.

And the enormous figure that had been deliberately erased from history.

For the first time in centuries, a faint outline began forming around the damaged carving.

Something was awakening.

Not fully.

Not yet.

But enough to make the mountains tremble.

Deep beneath the stone, two enormous eyes slowly opened.

They remained hidden in darkness.

Watching.

Waiting.

Remembering.

And somewhere above them, unaware of how close the ancient past had come to the present, Ash looked toward the snow-covered horizon.

The future of the Blackfang Pack had once seemed simple.

Survive.

Rebuild.

Find a new home.

Now Ash understood that survival would require something far greater.

He would have to uncover a history that his ancestors had deliberately buried.

He would have to understand the species that had once stood beside the Blackfang wolves.

And eventually, he would have to discover what had caused those ancient allies to turn against the darkness beneath the mountains.

For now, however, there was only one certainty.

The past had awakened.

And it was coming back for the living.
