Chapter 36: Chapter 36 : The Name Beneath the Snow

Ash followed.

They approached the abandoned settlement slowly.

Aren stopped beside one of the collapsed dens.

He touched the snow-covered stone with his paw.

Then he looked toward Ash.

He pointed toward the ruins.

Then toward himself.

Then he made the shape of several lynxes with his paws.

Ash understood.

There had once been many.

Now there was only him.

Ash looked around.

He couldn’t imagine surviving alone after losing an entire family or tribe.

"Aren..."

The lynx looked at him.

Ash placed one paw against his own chest.

Then pointed toward Aren.

"You don’t have to be alone."

Aren didn’t understand every word.

But he understood the gesture.

For the first time, the Silver Lynx stepped closer without hesitation.

He lowered his head.

Ash gently touched his forehead against Aren’s.

Neither moved.

The moment was quiet, almost fragile.

A friendship had begun without promises, without shared language, and without either of them fully understanding what the other had survived.

Aren eventually turned toward the ruins again.

He led Ash to a small stone structure partially buried beneath snow.

Inside, several old carvings remained visible.

They showed Silver Lynxes standing beneath the same celestial tree Ash had seen in the ancient ruins.

Ash’s heart began beating faster.

The symbol was everywhere.

On the pendant.

On the black stone.

On the ruins.

And now in Aren’s lost home.

There was a connection.

He simply didn’t know what it was.

Aren returned to the entrance and removed the broken pendant from beneath his fur.

He held it out.

Ash hesitated.

"You’re giving this to me?"

Aren pushed it closer.

Ash accepted it carefully.

The moment his paw touched the pendant, the blue symbol illuminated.

A faint warmth spread through his paw.

The surrounding carvings responded.

For a heartbeat, several ancient lines beneath the snow glowed blue.

Ash stepped backward.

The light vanished.

Aren stared at the pendant.

Then he looked toward Ash.

Neither understood what had happened.

Ash heard a familiar voice inside his mind.

The system appeared.

Ancient Relic Detected.

Origin: Unknown.

Connection identified: Blackfang Ancestral Legacy.

Synchronization incomplete.

Ash stared at the words.

He had never seen the system behave like this.

There was no reward.

No ability.

No numerical increase.

Only a warning.

The relic was connected to his ancestry.

But why?

How could something belonging to the Silver Lynx be connected to the Blackfang lineage?

Ash looked toward Aren.

The lynx was staring at him with the same confusion.

Ash suddenly realized that perhaps Aren didn’t know either.

He closed his paw around the pendant.

"We’ll find out."

Aren watched him.

Ash pointed toward the ruins.

Then toward the pendant.

Then toward the mountains.

Aren seemed to understand.

They would return.

Together.

But before leaving, Ash noticed something else.

Several deep marks crossed the stones near the edge of the ruined settlement.

They were not old.

Snow had fallen over most of them, but the exposed grooves were fresh.

Ash crouched.

The marks were enormous.

Aren immediately noticed them too.

His body became rigid.

He backed away from the ruins.

Ash followed his gaze toward the forest.

Nothing moved.

Yet something had changed.

The birds had stopped calling.

The wind had become strangely quiet.

Aren grabbed Ash’s shoulder.

They left the ruins without another word.

---

They returned to the Blackfang settlement shortly before sunset.

Ash entered quietly, hoping Elder Mira wouldn’t immediately notice the pendant.

She noticed it within seconds.

The old wolf was speaking with Rowan near the central fire when her eyes fell upon the object hanging around Ash’s neck.

Her expression changed completely.

The warmth disappeared from her face.

Her eyes widened.

She walked toward Ash slowly.

"Where did you get that?"

Ash hesitated.

"Aren gave it to me."

Elder Mira looked at the pendant again.

She touched it with one trembling paw.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Rowan noticed her reaction.

"Mira?"

She didn’t answer him immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the western mountains.

Ash had never seen fear in Elder Mira’s eyes before.

Concern, yes.

Grief, certainly.

But not fear.

"What is it?" Ash asked.

Elder Mira slowly lowered her paw.

"That symbol existed before the first Blackfang Alpha."

Ash stared at her.

"What does it mean?"

Mira looked at Rowan.

The veteran hunter understood immediately that she was deciding how much to reveal.

Finally, she spoke quietly.

"There are parts of our history that were never passed down to the young. Some knowledge was deliberately buried because the elders who possessed it believed that remembering certain things could bring danger back to us."

Ash’s grip tightened around the pendant.

"Was Aren’s tribe connected to us?"

Mira didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Ash understood that the question had touched something much deeper than he had expected.

"Then why didn’t anyone tell us?"

"Because sometimes," Mira said gently, "survival requires people to forget what once brought them together."

Ash frowned.

"That doesn’t make sense."

"No," Mira replied. "It doesn’t."

She looked toward the mountains again.

"And that is exactly why I am afraid."

---

That night, the settlement eventually became quiet.

The fires burned low.

The younger cubs slept beside their families.

Hunters rested after another long day of patrols.

Ash lay awake inside his den, staring at the pendant.

Too many questions filled his mind.

Who were the creatures that created those ruins?

Why did the Blackfang ancestors share a symbol with the Silver Lynxes?

Why had the elders erased parts of their own history?

And most importantly, what had happened to Aren’s people?

Ash eventually stepped outside.

The moon illuminated the snow-covered valley.

He looked toward the northern forest.

For a moment, he wondered whether Aren was watching.

He didn’t know that the young Silver Lynx was already there.

Far beyond the settlement, Aren stood on a snowy ridge.

He looked down at the wolves.

For the first time, the Blackfang settlement didn’t appear entirely foreign to him.

He had watched them before.

He had studied them.

He had feared them.

But now one of them had saved him without asking anything in return.

Ash had given him food.

He had respected his silence.

He had not demanded to know what happened to his tribe.

Aren lowered his head.

Perhaps the stories he had heard about wolves were wrong.

Then the forest behind him became silent.

Aren’s ears rose immediately.

He turned.

The trees stood motionless beneath the moonlight.

No wind moved through the branches.

No rabbit crossed the snow.

No bird called from the darkness.

Aren’s breathing slowed.

He knew that silence.

He had heard it before.

Something had entered his territory.

His amber eyes widened.

Between the distant trees, something massive moved.

Aren backed away.

The creature did not approach him.

It simply stood among the shadows.

Then its enormous head slowly turned.

Not toward Aren.

Toward the distant Blackfang settlement.

Aren’s fur rose along his spine.

For the first time since arriving in the valley, he understood something that frightened him more than the creature itself.

It wasn’t interested in him anymore.

It was interested in the wolves.

Aren looked toward Ash’s settlement.

Then toward the creature.

His instincts told him to run.

But another feeling held him there.

Ash.

The wolf who had treated him like something other than a monster.

Aren remained on the ridge.

He would not abandon him.

Far away, beneath the ruined chambers of Moonveil, something answered the ancient presence.

The blue crystal that had remained dormant for generations suddenly illuminated the entire chamber.

Its light traveled through cracks in the ancient stone.

Old carvings emerged from the darkness.

A symbol appeared.

The same symbol carried by Aren’s pendant.

The same symbol connected to the Blackfang lineage.

And somewhere beyond the ruined chamber, something shifted beneath the earth.

The mountain trembled once.

Then again.

The ancient crystal burned brighter.

For several moments, the entire chamber seemed to breathe with an energy that had been sleeping for centuries.

Then the light disappeared.

The darkness returned.

But the silence was no longer peaceful.

It was waiting.

Back in the settlement, Ash stood beneath the stars, unaware of what was happening beneath the mountains.

He looked at the pendant hanging against his chest.

He thought about the Alpha.

He thought about Moonveil.

He thought about Aren.

And for the first time, Ash realized that his journey was becoming much larger than becoming strong enough to protect the Blackfang Pack.

There was an entire world beyond the mountains.

There were forgotten peoples, ancient ruins, lost histories, and creatures whose stories had never reached the wolves.

Perhaps survival would require more than strength.

Perhaps the future the Alpha had entrusted to him would depend on whether he could understand those who were different from him.

Ash closed his paw around the pendant.

Somewhere beyond the northern forest, Aren remained beneath the moonlit sky.

Neither of them knew what the coming days would bring.

Neither knew why their histories were connected.

Neither knew what had awakened beneath Moonveil.

But one thing had already changed.

They were no longer strangers.

And in a world where old fears could turn neighboring species into enemies, that small bond might become the first thread in something far greater than either of them could imagine.

The snow continued falling over the valley.

For the Blackfang Pack, it was another cold night in an unfamiliar home.

For Ash, it was the beginning of a journey.

And beyond the frozen horizon, the world was waiting.
