Wei Wu remained by Wu Yun’s side, also acting as a precision marksman to provide support for Da Xiong and Caviar.

For a moment, the entire desert expanse seemed to fall silent.

Da Xiong and Caviar confidently jogged toward the Mexicans’ convoy, soon arriving less than thirty meters away.

The two found cover behind some rocks, dropping into a prone position and working to steady their heart rates, which had quickened from the run.

"Da Xiong is in position!"

"Caviar is in position!"

Hawkeye immediately piloted the drone over the convoy and began reporting the precise locations of the surviving Mexican Gang members.

"Oh, right! Be advised, there’s another man hiding under the black SUV next to the pickup truck."

Wei Wu continued, "Poison Thorn, prepare to fire on the man under the vehicle. Once you’ve taken the shot, you two can move in!"

"Roger!"

BANG! After the gunshot, Da Xiong saw a spray of blood erupt from underneath the black SUV Hawkeye had just pointed out.

"Go!" Da Xiong and Caviar split up, flanking from opposite sides.

They moved silently, taking cover at the front of the outermost vehicles and using the tires to conceal their feet from view.

Holding his light machine gun in one hand, Da Xiong made an attack signal toward the drone.

The drone immediately flew forward, pulling up slightly.

BOOM! Another massive explosion rang out.

A mangled torso, still clad in tattered clothing, was flung into the air and slammed heavily onto the roof of an SUV.

The sound was followed by the agonized screams of men on the ground.

"One KIA, two heavily wounded!" Hearing Hawkeye’s report in his earpiece, Da Xiong tightened his grip on the light machine gun.

"Seven more are still combat-effective! They’re at..."

Just then, one of the men snapped. He leaped to his feet and began firing his rifle wildly at the drone in the sky.

Before he could empty his magazine, his head exploded like a smashed watermelon.

This stopped anyone else who might have followed his lead cold. They suppressed their own desperate impulses as fear and bewilderment flooded their minds.

With practiced synchronicity, Da Xiong and Caviar each pulled out an offensive grenade. They pulled the pins, let the safety levers pop, counted two seconds, and then swiftly tossed the grenades toward their intended targets.

The two grenades detonated at nearly the same instant.

Da Xiong sprang up and rounded the back of the vehicle. Before the Mexicans there could react, his machine gun roared to life.

DAKKA-DAKKA-DAKKA!

Da Xiong didn’t bother with three-round bursts; he just let loose with a full-auto spray.

Caught between the onslaught of Da Xiong’s machine gun and Caviar’s shotgun, the remaining Mexicans were quickly gunned down—including the heavily wounded men still writhing on the ground.

Da Xiong and Caviar carefully swept the battlefield, leaving no stone unturned. They checked under the vehicles and inside them, missing nothing.

"All targets eliminated!"

Hearing their report, Hawkeye had the drone climb rapidly to scan the surroundings. After a few sweeps, he reported back, "Perimeter is clear. You can call in the cleanup crew!"

Wei Wu engaged the safety on his rifle before asking, "Boss, are we waiting for the cleanup crew here?"

Wu Yun had never seen a real battlefield. He felt it was necessary to go take a look, to steel his nerves and broaden his horizons.

"Let’s go take a look together," Wu Yun said, his expression firm.

Wei Wu nodded and spoke into the comm channel, "Hawkeye, Poison Thorn, maintain your positions and remain on overwatch."

Wei Wu was still wary of the cleanup crew, so he had Wang Hao drive the pickup to follow behind the G-Wagen, creating the impression that their entire team was on site.

It had to be said, the tactics and site selection of Wei Wu’s team were superb.

The night before departing, Wei Wu and his team had used Google Maps and GPS to select this very location: a wide, flat stretch of desert far from any roads, with excellent lines of sight.

They had even devised three separate tactical plans centered on this Little Stone Mountain. As it happened, the Mexicans had been cooperative enough to walk right into the first one: long-range sniping combined with aerial harassment to shatter the enemy’s morale, leading to their ultimate annihilation.

Before leaving Las Vegas, Hawkeye had used an untraceable phone to contact the cleanup crew, telling them to arrive near the coordinates in two and a half hours.

By his calculations, they were probably about ten minutes out.

Soon, their two vehicles pulled up and parked beside the Mexican convoy.

The moment Wu Yun stepped out of the vehicle, he was hit by the thick stench of cordite, mingled with the coppery tang of human blood and the nauseating odor of piss and shit.

Rounding the front of a vehicle, a scene from hell unfolded before Wu Yun, Wang Hao, and Wei Wu.

At least, it was for Wu Yun and Wang Hao. More than a dozen bodies lay scattered all around them, most of them far from intact.

Splattered blood and white brain matter were everywhere. Wang Hao saw one man whose head was missing from the bridge of the nose upward. Another had a small hole in his forehead, while the entire back of his skull was blown out, the blossoming mixture of red and white a shockingly vivid sight.

"Urrgh—" Wang Hao couldn’t hold it in any longer. He turned, braced himself against the tailgate of the pickup, and started vomiting.

As he steadied himself, his hand landed on something slick and greasy. After a moment, Wang Hao lifted his hand and saw it was a clump of red and white matter. His stomach, which had only just begun to settle, immediately revolted again.

Wu Yun wasn’t faring much better. ’I thought I had a strong stomach,’ he reflected, but seeing so many grotesquely mangled corpses, he couldn’t stop the color from draining from his face.

Forcibly suppressing the urge to vomit, he stared at the bodies of the gangsters who had died for their greed. ’They died because of me,’ Wu Yun thought, ’but I don’t feel any guilt. Only relief.’

He looked at the guns scattered on the ground and the mangled RPG launcher. ’If I had fallen into the hands of these desperados,’ he realized, ’they would have squeezed me for everything I was worth and then killed me. There would have been no escape.’
