Tossing aside the complaints, Alice Turner still answered the call from Charlotte Shaw. Although she had already guessed the purpose of the call, she still asked, “Charlotte! Is there something you need from me?”

“Alice! Do you have time this morning? Benjamin is being discharged today. If you have time, please come over.” Charlotte Shaw was much more direct than her mother Isla Lane, going straight to the point and saying what was on both their minds.

Alice Turner glanced at the man beside her, who also looked back at her, and they shared a knowing smile. She withdrew her gaze, “Charlotte! I have time this morning.”

“That’s wonderful. You must come earlier; Benjamin is leaving the hospital at nine.” Hearing Alice Turner say she had time, Charlotte Shaw was thrilled and eagerly urged Alice to come over early even before she confirmed it.

Compared to Charlotte Shaw’s excitement, Alice Turner appeared very calm, calmly repeating the response she’d given to Isla Lane earlier, “I know.”

“Okay, I won’t disturb you then. We’ll see you later.” Charlotte Shaw, too excited to notice Alice Turner’s indifference, said goodbye and hung up the call.

As soon as Charlotte Shaw hung up, Isla Lane grabbed her, “Did Alice say she would come?”

Having stood by the whole time, she heard the entire content of the call and just wanted to double-check with her daughter to ensure she hadn’t misheard.

“Yes, she said she’ll come soon.”

Charlotte Shaw nodded confidently, confirming it for her mother.

Relieved it wasn’t a mistake, Isla Lane was delighted and eager to say more when she suddenly saw Benjamin Shaw walk in from the bathroom and immediately closed her open mouth.

Benjamin Shaw glanced at both Isla Lane and Charlotte Shaw and walked over to sit down on the sofa without a word, listening to the commotion his mother and sister had just caused outside.

He smiled bitterly to himself; his mom and sister were beyond worried about him, but their efforts were in vain.

She had long since married, living happily with his good friend, and he was utterly sidelined now.

“Benjamin! Are you sure you’re feeling okay? If there’s anything wrong, please tell me.”

Seeing Benjamin Shaw silently sit down on the sofa, Isla Lane and Charlotte Shaw hurried over to sit near him.

Soon after sitting down, Isla Lane anxiously looked at her son, her face, engraved with age, filled with concern.

Benjamin Shaw shook his head, feeling stifled inside and unwilling to speak. He leaned back against the sofa, closed his eyes, and waited quietly for the doctor to clock in and handle the discharge paperwork.

Seeing his behavior, Isla Lane frowned, wanting to ask something, but noticing Benjamin Shaw’s unwillingness to be bothered, she opened her mouth only to close it again.

Charlotte Shaw also noticed something amiss with Benjamin Shaw. Looking at him with his eyes closed, she turned to Isla Lane, silently asking: What’s wrong with Benjamin?

I don’t know!

Isla Lane understood Charlotte Shaw’s inquiry, shaking her head to silently inform her daughter that she also didn’t know.

Although mother and daughter didn’t know what had happened, they both unanimously believed it wasn’t because Benjamin Shaw was feeling unwell, but rather because of someone—his ex-wife, Alice Turner.
