Raising the Villain in Wrong Way
Chapter 452: Drunken Stupor
"Tell me what I have to do. I will chop a thousand cords of petrified wood. I will clean every magma vent in this mountain with a toothbrush."
Ignis looked down at her glowing silver hair and the fierce, burning passion in her silver-flecked eyes.
The Chief Forgemaster grinned, a smile of pure brotherhood.
"There is no need for chores, Brother!" Ignis roared happily. "The Heart Fire cannot be taught to just anyone! It requires a constitution capable of withstanding immense internal pressure, and a soul that understands the rhythm of the flame!
You already possess the foundation! Your understanding of the Maillard reaction proves your spirit is ready!"
He tossed an incredibly heavy, thick leather blacksmith’s apron at her.
"Tie your hair back, Vanguard Leader!" Ignis challenged, picking up a massive iron forging hammer. "We skip the meditation! The Iron-Stone way is to learn by burning! We are going to teach you how to swallow the flame, and then we are going to cook a feast that will make the volcano erupt with flavor!"
Ji’an caught the heavy leather apron.
She didn’t hesitate. She threw off her oversized white silk outer-robe, tied the heavy leather securely around her waist, and used a scrap of cloth to tie her cascading silver hair into a tight, messy bun at the back of her head.
"Show me the heat, old man," Ji’an smirked, grabbing her cast-iron spatula, her entire body buzzing with the thrill of discovering a new technique.
For the next six hours, the Grand Kitchens of the Iron-Stove Monastery became a laboratory of chaotic, explosive, high-temperature culinary science.
Ji’an was a prodigy.
Her newly forged Body Fusion core was incredibly resilient, effortlessly adapting to the brutal, internal pressure of the Heart Fire technique.
Under Ignis’s booming guidance, she learned how to draw the ambient geothermal heat of the volcano into her meridians, compress it, and channel it precisely through her fingertips.
It wasn’t easy.
She accidentally flash-vaporized three pots of broth before she mastered the throttling mechanism, resulting in massive clouds of savory steam that left the entire kitchen smelling like roasted garlic.
But she adapted with terrifying speed.
By midnight, Ji’an was standing at the obsidian prep station, her face smeared with soot, sweat pouring down her forehead, a brilliant, unhinged smile on her face.
She held a raw, massive shank of Desert-Ox in her left hand.
She didn’t use a pan. She channeled the Heart Fire directly into her right palm, her skin glowing a faint, translucent cherry-red.
She slapped her glowing hand directly against the meat, utilizing a rapid-fire searing teqnique that perfectly caramelized the exterior while locking the juices inside.
"YES!" Ji’an cheered, tossing the perfectly seared shank onto a platter. "The crust is immaculate! The heat transfer is instantaneous! This is the greatest technique in the universe!"
"A NATURAL FORGEMASTER!" Elder Cinder cheered, slamming her tongs against an anvil in approval. "She cooks with the fury of an erupting caldera!"
Sitting in a carved stone chair in the corner of the chaotic kitchen, ignored by the sweating, screaming, meat-searing blacksmiths, was Yan Zhaoge.
The Overtime Boss had his legs crossed, his chin resting on his hand, completely mesmerized by the scene.
He wasn’t looking at the perfectly seared meat.
He was looking at Lin Ji’an.
He watched the way the orange light of the magma vents danced across her soot-stained, delicate features.
He watched the way her silver-flecked eyes burned with an intense, pure passion that had nothing to do with orthodox politics, sectarian rivalries, or cosmic conspiracies.
She wasn’t pretending to be a young master here.
She wasn’t playing the aloof Vanguard Leader.
She was just a Chef, entirely in her element, laughing loudly and high-fiving a seven-foot-tall blacksmith over a perfectly rendered piece of animal fat.
’She is spectacular,’ Yan Zhaoge thought, a rare, genuine, completely unguarded smile touching his lips. ’Jiu Zui, you fool. You tried to hide a sun inside a dusty wine cellar.’
He knew he was playing a dangerous game.
He knew taking her to the Stargazing Tower could trigger a cataclysm that would unravel the very fabric of the Azure Empire.
But watching her now, laughing as she accidentally set a cutting board on fire with her bare hands, Yan Zhaoge realized he didn’t care about the consequences.
The machinery of fate was boring.
The glitch was fascinating.
"Ji’an!" Elder Ignis roared over the din of the kitchen, tossing her a massive, heavy iron flagon. "You have mastered the basic ignition! Now, we celebrate! Drink the Molten-Core Ale! It will temper the fire in your belly!"
Ji’an caught the flagon.
She was exhausted, covered in soot, and her arms ached from channeling the intense thermal Qi. But she had never felt more alive.
She popped the cork.
She didn’t care that she hated wine. This wasn’t a stuffy, passive-aggressive toast at a diplomatic banquet. This was a victory drink with her new kitchen brigade.
She raised the flagon high.
"To the Heart Fire!" Ji’an roared, tapping into the boisterous, Viking-like energy of the room. "And to the supreme, undisputed supremacy of a perfect sear!"
"TO THE PERFECT SEAR!" the blacksmiths bellowed in unison, slamming their hammers and ladles against the obsidian tables, the sound echoing like thunder through the volcano.
Ji’an tipped the flagon back and took a gulping swallow.
The "ale" was not ale.
It was a highly concentrated, volatile, and thermally infused spirit brewed from fermented fire-lotus and volcanic ash.
It didn’t burn her throat; it exploded in her stomach, sending a shockwave of pure, liquid heat straight to her brain.
Ji’an slammed the flagon down on the table, gasping for air, her eyes watering.
"Holy... that is strong," Ji’an wheezed, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, feeling a sudden, intense buzz hit her system instantly.
"It puts hair on your chest, Brother!" Ignis laughed, slapping her on the back.
Ji’an giggled.
A loud, entirely not-so-young-master-like, slightly drunken giggle.
The Heart Fire training, combined with the extreme heat, the physical exhaustion, and the sudden influx of hyper-potent alcohol, completely obliterated her remaining filters.
She turned around, leaning heavily against the obsidian prep table, a goofy, flushed smile on her soot-stained face.
She looked across the kitchen and locked eyes with Yan Zhaoge.
"Hey! Overtime Boss!" Ji’an called out, her voice loud and slurred, pointing a greasy finger at him.
Yan Zhaoge raised an eyebrow, highly amused by her sudden intoxication. "Yes, little intern?"
Ji’an stumbled slightly, abandoning her spatula, and walked unsteadily across the kitchen toward him.
She stopped right in front of his stone chair, leaning down until her face was inches from his, her silver hair falling over her shoulders.
She smelled of smoke, roasted meat, and the sweet, potent fire-lotus ale.
"I decided," Ji’an whispered loudly, tapping him on the nose with her soot-covered finger. "I decided that you are not a complete garbage person. Your arrays are okay. And your kitchen is very cool. So... I am going to make you the best damn snack you have ever eaten in your entire immortal life. Because I am the Apex Anomaly, and my pastries defy physics."
Yan Zhaoge didn’t push her away.
He looked into her hazy, silver-flecked eyes, his amber gaze darkening with intense, quiet gravity.
"I look forward to it, Chef," Yan Zhaoge murmured softly, reaching up to gently, casually wipe a smudge of soot from her cheek with his thumb.
Ji’an didn’t flinch away from the touch. She just offered a sleepy, drunken smile, her eyelids drooping.
"Gonna make you a soufflé," Ji’an mumbled, her body swaying dangerously. "A magma soufflé. Don’t tell Wangchen. He gets... he gets so weird about the temperature..."
And with that final, incoherent promise, the alcohol and the exhaustion completely shut down her biological servers.
Lin Ji’an’s eyes rolled back in her head, and she collapsed forward, passing out, falling directly into the Sovereign of the Iron-Stone Monastery’s lap.
Yan Zhaoge caught her effortlessly, his arms wrapping around her waist to stop her from sliding to the floor.
The chaotic, roaring noise of the Grand Kitchens seemed to fade into the background.
Yan Zhaoge looked down at the ethereal, silver-haired girl sleeping soundly against his chest, completely vulnerable, completely trusting in her drunken state.
He carefully brushed a stray lock of silver hair from her face, a slow, deeply fond smile touching his lips.
