Chapter 1465: Chapter 439: Knowledge Changes Destiny
Chapter 439 [Knowledge Changes Destiny]
When Chen Yan walked out of the sea of sand, nine days had already passed.
On the ninth evening, Chen Yan reached the edge of the desert alone and finally arrived at the side of a highway.
He then released his RV, got into the vehicle, and started driving south.
At night, the car arrived at a small village.
This village appeared rather small; you could see from one end to the other at a glance.
There was a rundown gas station at the village entrance... The shed seemed to be casually built with wood and leather.
As for an oil storage facility, there was none, just a few large barrels piled up.
Inside was a dilapidated house—though it was called a house, it was actually converted from the shell of an old bus, looking more like a sheet metal shelter.
After glancing at it, Chen Yan parked the car by the roadside and slowly walked towards that sheet metal shelter.
The door was the original bus door; after gently pulling it open, Chen Yan bent over and walked inside, finding it quite narrow.
However, some bricks were placed under the metal shelter to lift the height a bit, allowing one to walk upright without hitting the ceiling.
A pile of junk formed a counter, and the shelf behind it was filled with various items.
There was quite a variety. Chen Yan glanced over and even found Coca-Cola.
Just in time, he had finished the Coke from his supply stockpile.
But after looking at the shelf... the Coke turned out to be the American version.
Chen Yan immediately dismissed the impulse to buy a can.
This American version of Coke is most likely smuggled... Although it isn’t really smuggling, usually it’s the local US Army base, where the logistics team sells it out.
Yet... even though Chen Yan is a seasoned "Coke enthusiast," he still politely declines the American version.
The American Coke tastes awful! The sugar content is nearly lethal! Moreover... the taste is a bit odd because the American version uses corn syrup.
Behind the counter sat a seemingly dirty teenager.
His face was smudged with dirt, or perhaps he hadn’t washed in days, looking both dark and greasy, and his hair was similarly greasy, clumped together.
Upon seeing Chen Yan enter, the teenager immediately lifted his head. Chen Yan noticed he was holding a mobile phone, seemingly playing something.
The teenager said something initially, but Chen Yan didn’t understand.
Soon after, the teenager gestured an action of refueling with a nozzle and stiffly uttered a single word: "GAS???"
Chen Yan understood and shook his head: "NO! GAS, NO!"
The teenager seemed a bit disappointed. Without refueling, there wasn’t much profit for him.
Chen Yan casually picked a few items from the shelf: some locally packaged food that he couldn’t understand, possibly chocolate and cookies.
The teenager seemed unwilling, bursting out several words in a questioning tone.
Though the accent was strange, Chen Yan managed to understand.
The teenager asked three questions.
Hotel?
Food?
Or, want women?
Chen Yan didn’t need a hotel; he had an RV.
In this rundown village, the hotel conditions couldn’t possibly be more comfortable and cleaner than his RV.
As for food... His supply of food was still ample.
And in such a remote place, Chen Yan wasn’t interested in sampling the local food that looked anything but sanitary.
And women... ha-ha.
Chen Yan mentioned a city’s name, which was his intended destination.
He wanted to ask directions—because in this unfortunate location, the navigation map was useless.
Upon hearing the city’s name, the teenager understood.
The teenager quickly grasped Chen Yan’s intention and excitedly spewed out a bunch of local language while gesturing wildly, pointing toward the direction of the highway outside.
His fingers motioned left and right.
Regrettably, Chen Yan didn’t understand a word.
Soon, the teenager realized that Chen Yan didn’t understand his language.
Yet, the teenager’s English was limited—he only knew a few words related to items his shop offered.
Beyond those, he knew little about numbers—the numbers he couldn’t express might be written down.
Watching the teenager’s enthusiastic demeanor left Chen Yan feeling disappointed.
Never mind, the lack of directions didn’t matter; he was aimless anyway and could roam about regardless.
The destination city wasn’t that important to him.
Seeing the teenager’s big eyes looking a bit embarrassed, Chen Yan smiled kindly.
He fetched a ten US Dollar bill from his pocket, tossed it onto the counter, and lightly said thank you.
In any case, it was like giving a tip.
Just as Chen Yan was about to step out, the teenager suddenly slapped his head and exclaimed.
He circled out from behind the counter and blocked Chen Yan, snatching the US Dollar and stuffing it into his filthy clothes pocket.
Then he retrieved a ballpoint pen and a piece of cardboard from the counter.
The cardboard seemed to be packaging from some unidentifiable item.
The teenager shouted something at Chen Yan, which Chen Yan roughly understood.
This was to draw a map for him.
The teenager then scribbled on the cardboard with the pen, and Chen Yan roughly figured it out.
The kid was clever, first drawing a car and then pointing to himself and Chen Yan, gesturing a few times.
