Chapter 1355: Chapter 404: Ordinary and Unremarkable
After combing his hair neatly, he tucked a handgun at his waist under his clothes, grabbed a canvas bag, and walked out of the church.
After walking a street, Chen Yan opened a roadside sedan that looked very old.
It was a Citroën hatchback, an old model, but the car was kept very clean.
This was Chen Yan’s backup car placed here.
Chen Yan got into the car, ignited the engine, and checked his appearance in the mirror again.
He looked like a clean and simple Asian, and he took out a pair of non-prescription glasses and put them on, nodding with satisfaction.
Then, he drove out of this neighborhood.
·
After driving for about twenty minutes, Chen Yan arrived at a neighborhood inhabited by Chinese.
The streets here were very narrow, but noticeably bustling.
However, it seemed most were from the Cantonese area.
Chen Yan parked his car by the roadside at the bottom of a building.
The shop downstairs was a convenience store, and next door was a Chinese restaurant. However, both were quite old and small, clearly not the kind of fake Chinese restaurant targeting foreigners, but rather catering to the Asians within this neighborhood.
Chen Yan had eaten once at this Chinese restaurant, checked the menu, and confirmed there was no nonsense like "General Tso’s Chicken" - this "famous Chinese dish," then he understood.
It was still night, the Chinese restaurant had long closed, and Chen Yan went upstairs via a narrow stairway next to it; the second floor was an apartment he rented.
It was small and simple, with just one room and a toilet.
And the bedroom had no windows! There was only a small air vent in the toilet.
But at least it was clean.
And, the price was cheap.
Of course, when renting, Chen Yan used fake documents — it was Mandy who helped find the way to make fake IDs.
The reason for renting in the Chinese neighborhood was, naturally, because Chen Yan himself was a Dragon Country person and could better hide here.
At the same time, Chinese are generally thrifty, many rent privately without going through real estate agencies to save money and taxes.
Homeowners, when renting out, just simply check the tenant’s documents without registration.
This gave Chen Yan room to exploit loopholes.
This place was secretly rented by Chen Yan himself, Mandy doesn’t know. Consider it a safehouse prepared for himself.
Chen Yan entered the room, confirmed the door lock hadn’t been pried open.
After entering, he felt a leather paper package hidden inside the ceiling - a gun, a clip, and two bundles of cash inside were all still there.
Chen Yan nodded with satisfaction.
He locked the door and lay down on the single bed in the room, covered himself with a blanket, and gently fell asleep.
A few hours later, Chen Yan was woken by the smell of fried food from the Chinese restaurant seeping into his nose.
He turned over, stretched hard, and let out a long breath.
Noises came from downstairs.
Chen Yan got up, washed up, and went downstairs to the Chinese restaurant.
Though called a Chinese restaurant, it’s more like a Cantonese-style café.
Chen Yan walked into the narrow shop and sat down, shouting to the boss: "Uncle Wu, a serving of fried noodles, and a cup of Yin-Yang."
A middle-aged man, whose face distinctly bore Cantonese features, peeked out at Chen Yan: "Northern Lad, found a job?"
"Found one, washing dishes in a restaurant run by foreigners." Chen Yan replied casually.
Uncle Wu mumbled: "Washing dishes, washing dishes... washing for foreigners, might as well stay here and wash for me."
"You pay too little, that bit of money isn’t enough to cover the rent you’re charging." Chen Yan retorted with a smile.
This line shut boss Uncle Wu up.
Yes, that apartment upstairs, Uncle Wu is the landlord.
Chen Yan savored the fried rice noodles, drank a cup of milk tea, and leaned comfortably against the chair, relaxing.
From the back of the shop, a young girl came out, sat at an empty table, and used a makeup box to touch up her makeup.
At this hour, there were no other guests in the shop, the girl deliberately sat at a table across from Chen Yan to put on makeup, occasionally sneaking glances at Chen Yan with a small mirror.
This girl is Uncle Wu’s daughter, although she doesn’t seem to be an only child, since Uncle Wu is often heard on the phone scolding someone, scolding a "rotten kid", so this fellow probably has an older son too.
This younger daughter inherited Uncle Wu’s traits in appearance, with slightly high cheekbones, a typical Cantonese facial structure.
But a young girl can still be quite bright and charming, with better grooming generally not ugly — unless the basis is really too poor.
This girl has had some words with Chen Yan, her name seems to be Angie or Annie, Chen Yan didn’t remember.
Sixteen years old, but in temperament very different from Uncle Wu — the girl has a distinct ABC vibe, her style of dress and makeup is also very ABC.
Let’s put it this way, in terms of makeup techniques, actually Dragon Country’s makeup techniques are stronger than those in North America.
Chen Yan privately thinks, given this girl’s looks foundation, using the popular makeup techniques from Dragon Country could elevate her attractiveness a notch.
The girl likes to chat with Chen Yan, but after a few attempts and sensing Chen Yan faking dullness not engaging much, the girl couldn’t be bothered to speak more.
Still, she likes to secretly glance at Chen Yan — because Chen Yan has a handsome face, and he stands tall and straight.
"How about it?"
The girl suddenly looked up at Chen Yan, asking a question out of the blue.
Chen Yan was caught off guard: "What?"
"Me, am I pretty with this makeup?"
Chen Yan responded with an oh: "Uh, looks good."
"You didn’t even look carefully." The girl rolled her eyes in dissatisfaction, then packed up her makeup kit: "There’s a party tonight, with free drinks and snacks, want to come?"
"Got work tonight." Chen Yan smiled, politely declining.
"Boring!" The girl rolled her eyes again: "You’re very dull."
"Not working, no pay, and without pay, no money to pay rent to your dad." Chen Yan answered with a smile.
"I invited you because you have a car, hoping you’d drive me, not because I fancy you."
The girl stood up, rolled her eyes at Chen Yan once more, and turned to leave.
Chen Yan glanced at the girl’s back shadow, hey, no manners.
But he then withdrew his gaze, as Uncle Wu walked over.
Seemingly witnessing Chen Yan not picking up on his daughter’s hint, Uncle Wu’s attitude towards Chen Yan improved somewhat.
He even tossed Chen Yan a cigarette, and sat across from him.
"Northern Lad, really going to wash dishes for foreigners?"
"Yep, that’s right." Chen Yan smiled, picking up the cigarette to light, taking a puff: "But need to find another job, just dish-washing isn’t enough. Planning to pick up another gig."
"Car washing, ever done it?" Uncle Wu smiled and asked.
"Never done, but can learn, car washing isn’t hard."
"Hmmm." Uncle Wu chuckled, pulled out a piece of paper, picked up a pen, and wrote down a phone number: "Call this number, say I introduced you, they might take you in. Pay is not much, but they’re dependable, at least they won’t scam or cheat you."
Chen Yan smiled.
Is this a thank you for not flirting with his daughter?
But, it’s a kind gesture.
"Northern Lad, your documents are fake, better be careful in the foreign restaurant, they might spot it and not say anything, and when payday arrives, renege on your salary. You wouldn’t dare call the police."
Uncle Wu leisurely took a drag on his cigarette, squinting as he smiled at Chen Yan: "Many foreign restaurants fleece people like this, some even call immigration to have you caught."
Chen Yan didn’t even blink, quietly smiled: "You old one actually noticed my document is fake?"
"Bah, your document, craftsmanship is quite average, I could tell at first glance." Uncle Wu shook his head.
Chen Yan chuckled: "Then you dare rent to me?"
"You don’t seem like a bad person." Uncle Wu grinned: "I can read faces, and your face isn’t bad."
Can read faces?
Chen Yan chuckled: "Well, I thank you then."
This Uncle Wu, whether or not he can read faces, and if he’s in the same line, Chen Yan isn’t sure.
But he checked Uncle Wu’s fate.
How should I put it...
This fellow appears ordinary, but actually has an aura of Evil Qi in his destiny! He has been involved in killings, and quite a bit!
This seemingly unremarkable restaurant owner, if the deaths under his hands are less than two hands full, Chen Yan dares to write his name backward!
