Primordial Heir: Nine Stars
Chapter 488: The mysterious beast within
The evening descended upon the pocket world, its artificial moon casting a pale, silver glow across the twisted forest. Nero stood at the edge of a small clearing, his eyes scanning the terrain. He had found a spot sheltered by ancient trees, their branches forming a natural canopy overhead. The ground was soft, covered in moss and fallen leaves, a perfect place to rest.
He raised his hand, and the earth beneath him began to shift. With a focused will, he commanded the Law of Earth, shaping the soil into a deep, circular pit. The edges were smooth, the bottom even, a perfect basin. He called upon the Law of Water, and a stream of clear liquid flowed from his palm, filling the pit. The water was cool at first, but he summoned his Law of Fire, a gentle warmth spreading through the water, heating it to the perfect temperature. Steam rose from the surface, curling into the night air.
He had created his own private onsen, a sanctuary in the heart of the wilderness.
He undressed slowly, his movements unhurried. The black adventure gear fell away, revealing the sculpted muscles beneath. His body was a testament to his training, every muscle defined, every line sharp. The mysterious tattoo that ran from the back of his neck down his spine was vivid, its intricate patterns gleaming faintly under the moonlight. Countless small scars dotted his skin—remnants of battles fought, monsters slain. He had never healed them with his regeneration. They were reminders, marks of his journey.
He stepped into the water, the heat seeping into his muscles, relaxing his body. He sat down, the water rising to his chest, and leaned back against the edge of the pit. His eyes closed, those ominous red lids hiding the power within. His dark blue hair shone under the artificial moon, the strands catching the light, framing his handsome features.
His expression remained cold, calm, unreadable. But beneath the surface, a sense of peace settled over him. The tension of the hunt, the constant vigilance, the relentless pursuit of power—all of it melted away in the warmth of the water. He felt his body relax, his mind quieting. His gut feeling told him something interesting was about to happen soon, but he pushed the thought aside. For now, he would rest. He would prepare.
The steam rose around him, carrying the scent of earth and water. The forest was quiet, the only sound the gentle crackle of the fire he had used to heat the water. He let himself drift, suspended in the warmth, his senses dulled, his thoughts still. It was a rare moment of pure relaxation, a gift he rarely allowed himself.
After a long, languid bath, he rose from the water. His skin was flushed from the heat, his muscles loose and supple. He dried himself with a cloth from his spatial ring and dressed in clean, comfortable clothes. He sat on a flat stone near the pit and set up a small grill.
He had brought various ingredients from his spatial ring—meat, vegetables, herbs, spices. He arranged them on the grill, the fire crackling beneath. The aroma of cooking food filled the clearing, mingling with the scent of the forest. He turned the skewers with practiced ease, the meat sizzling, the vegetables softening.
He poured himself a glass of wine, the dark red liquid catching the moonlight. He took a sip, the taste rich and smooth, warming his chest. He ate slowly, savoring each bite, allowing himself to enjoy the simple pleasure of a good meal.
The night was calm, the moon bright, the stars scattered across the sky like diamonds. Nero sat in the quiet, his wine glass in his hand, his body relaxed, his mind at ease. He had no words for this moment, no need for them. He simply was.
He finished his meal, extinguished the fire, and retreated into his tent. The night was still, the forest silent. He lay down, his eyes closing, his breathing slow and steady.
•••
Sleep refused to come.
Nero lay in his tent, his eyes open, staring at the canvas ceiling. The quiet of the pocket world pressed against him, the distant sounds of the forest a muted symphony. His body was tired, his muscles heavy from the day’s battles, but his mind was restless, refusing to settle. He rose from his sleeping mat and stepped outside, the cool night air brushing against his skin. The artificial moon hung low in the sky, casting silver light across the clearing.
He sat cross-legged on a flat stone, his hands resting on his knees, and closed his eyes. His breathing slowed, deepening into the familiar rhythm of meditation. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. The ambient prana of the pocket world flowed into him, cool and calming, filling his cores, steadying his thoughts. He focused his will, and his consciousness slipped from his body, descending into the depths of his inner world.
The universe unfolded around him, vast and eternal, a cosmos of swirling energy and distant light. The nine stars hung in the sky, each one a beacon of power, a law waiting to be awakened. Four of them shone with brilliant intensity, their light pouring across the void.
The red star blazed with fiery heat, its surface churning with molten energy. The Law of Fire, destructive and consuming.
The golden star crackled with celestial lightning, arcs of electricity dancing across its surface. The Law of Lightning, fast and relentless.
The brown star pulsed with a deep, steady rhythm, its glow warm and grounding. The Law of Earth, solid and unyielding.
The blue star shimmered like a vast ocean, its light cool and fluid. The Law of Water, adaptable and enduring.
The remaining stars hung in the sky, their light dim, their surfaces covered in thick black chains. Nine chains wrapped around each, sealing their power, keeping them dormant. But the fifth star—the green one—had changed.
Many of its chains were broken, their links shattered, fragments floating in the void. More than half of the seals had been undone, proof that the powerful monsters he had slain had contributed their essences, accelerating the awakening process. The green star was regaining its color, a faint emerald glow beginning to pulse from its core. It would not be long now. The Law of Wind was close to awakening.
Nero’s soul form floated in the void, his translucent figure suspended above the stars. He observed the green star with quiet anticipation, a sense of curiosity stirring within him. Another law, another power to master. He looked forward to it.
He tore his gaze away from the stars and looked down. Below him, at the center of the inner world, the vortex churned. It was a mass of condensed prana, a swirling maelstrom of energy that pulsed with a life of its own. It was vast, ancient, and within it, something was sealed. Something dangerous.
Nero’s expression remained calm, but his instincts sharpened. The vortex radiated power, raw and untamed, a presence that pressed against his awareness. He had grown stronger since he had first discovered it. He was now a Red Knight, one step away from the top, his mastery over his laws expanding with each passing day. Yet, he knew—instinctively, irrevocably—that the thing within the vortex was beyond him. He could not confront it. He could not identify it. He could not even investigate it. To do so would be to invite death.
He turned away from the vortex, his decision made. He had not come here to stir the beast. He had come to assess his progress, to see how many chains he had broken. Satisfied, he began to withdraw, his soul form ascending, preparing to return to his body.
As his consciousness began to fade, something stirred deep within the vortex. Two eyes opened, blood red, identical to Nero’s own ominous gaze. They stared upward, watching his retreating form with an ancient, inscrutable intensity. The stars in the sky, both sealed and unsealed, trembled violently, their light flickering as if in protest. The vortex pulsed once, twice, then settled back into its steady rhythm.
The eyes closed.
The disturbance passed unnoticed by Nero, his soul already returning to the world of the waking. He did not see the trembling stars, nor the brief, silent awakening of the thing within the vortex. He felt nothing of the ancient presence that had watched him depart.
The inner world fell silent once more, its secrets untouched, its mysteries waiting.
