Chapter 957: Chapter 1174: Sub-Ultimate treasure
"Coach, you can even tell that just by looking—you're really amazing!"
Gemma looked at Julian with admiration. She had only seen him give her Steelix a simple checkup, yet he could accurately tell that her Steelix had eaten some kind of treasure.
That was just too incredible—after all, even Pokémon hospitals would find it hard to detect something like that.
"I don't know whether to say you're lucky or unlucky."
Julian sized up Steelix. Under his gaze, Steelix's entire body stiffened, becoming extremely nervous.
Steelix: 'This human is so scary… so scary.'
If its trainer wasn't standing beside it, Steelix felt like it would have already been scared to tears by Julian.
Just a single glance from this human made it unable to move.
"Coach, what do you mean? Don't tell me that the treasure had a problem?"
Gemma wasn't stupid—she immediately caught the implication in Julian's words.
"Mm."
Julian nodded. "What it ate was a sub-Ultimate treasure. I don't need to tell you how rare those are—most Elite-level trainers might never see one in their entire lives."
"A sub-Ultimate treasure?!"
Gemma couldn't help but gasp.
Although her family background was indeed quite good, something like a sub-Ultimate treasure was still beyond her reach—at least for now, she wasn't qualified to access such things.
Now, her ace Pokémon, Steelix, had accidentally eaten one. How could she not be overjoyed?
"Coach, then what did you mean by 'unlucky'?"
She already understood the lucky part, but Julian had also mentioned unlucky.
"Because the Typing of that sub-Ultimate treasure doesn't match its own. That treasure was probably of the Normal-typing, so Steelix can't absorb its energy."
"As a result, the energy from the treasure keeps surging chaotically inside its body. That's the main reason your Steelix hasn't been able to break through to the pseudo-Elite tier."
Hearing Julian's explanation, Gemma's face immediately turned anxious. As a professional trainer, she knew very well how serious the consequences could be if a Pokémon ate a treasure that didn't match its Type.
The worst-case scenario was, of course, death.
"I've told you not to eat random things! Now look at the trouble you've caused!"
Gemma kicked Steelix, then immediately clutched her own foot, tears welling up from the pain.
Steelix, meanwhile, looked back at its trainer with an utterly innocent expression.
When someone cared too much, they became flustered. Julian didn't blame her.
'Maybe Steelix line just really likes to eat?'
His own Steelix was a glutton, and this one—eating a treasure that didn't even match its Type—was probably also a glutton. A rather foolish one at that.
But Pokémon were very sensitive to energy fluctuations.
And treasures could generally be divided into two types: those that emitted some kind of energy and those that didn't.
Treasures that emitted energy were the easiest to find. Pokémon could also judge, based on the energy emitted, whether the treasure suited them.
And most treasures actually emitted energy—it was just a matter of how strong that emission was.
Only a very small number of treasures concealed their energy. And if the energy was hidden, you wouldn't even know whether it was a treasure, let alone think of eating it.
"Coach, please save my Steelix!"
Gemma grabbed Julian's hand, her face full of worry and urgency.
"Don't worry. It ate a Normal-type treasure, which is actually pretty lucky. Normal-type energy is the mildest, and it's already been half a year. If something was going to happen, it would have happened by now."
"Now, as long as the energy of the sub-Ultimate treasure inside its body is completely used up, it will be fine."
"Not only that, but because the energy has been surging around inside its body, it's actually been tempering Steelix's internal organs, making them stronger."
"You could even say it's a blessing in disguise."
Hearing that everything was fine, Gemma immediately let out a sigh of relief and released Julian's hand.
Julian: 'Heh, women.'
But the very next second, his hand was grabbed again.
"Then, Coach, how long will it take for Steelix to use up all that energy?"
"About half a year," Julian said.
"Ah? Then before the League, Steelix won't be able to break through to pseudo-Elite?"
Gemma looked disappointed. Although she was happy that Steelix was fine, achieving a good result in the League was also one of her current goals.
If her ace couldn't break through to the pseudo-Elite tier, it would be hard for her to get a good ranking—unless she got lucky.
Lucky enough to run into weak opponents, or opponents whose main Pokémon were heavily injured in previous matches, letting her take advantage.
Otherwise, she'd be looking at a one- or two-day run in the League.
"Since I agreed to help you, of course I have a way."
As he spoke, a Poké Ball at Julian's waist opened.
"Luca~"
Lucario appeared.
"Lucario!"
Gemma shrieked at the sight and immediately lunged toward it, but Lucario dodged out of the way.
Julian looked at Gemma. 'Why does she look like some kind of obsessive fangirl?'
"Coach, I didn't expect you to have a Lucario! Are you a Fighting-type trainer?"
Gemma asked excitedly, eyeing Lucario as if she were about to pounce again.
"I'm a Steel-type specialist," Julian said.
Lucario had restrained its aura, so Gemma couldn't judge its strength or level from its presence.
But for some reason, she felt that it was even stronger than her father's Elite-level Pokémon.
"Coach, you're a Steel-type too!" Gemma grew even more delighted.
Wasn't this fate?
"Coach, what did you bring Lucario out for? Are you going to have it spar with my Steelix?"
Steelix immediately shook its head frantically.
This human was a monster—his Pokémon must be monsters too.
'Are you trying to get me killed so you can replace your ace Pokémon?'
Steelix looked at Gemma with a resentful expression.
Unfortunately, Gemma's attention was entirely on Lucario.
"Use Drain Punch. Draw out all the Normal-type energy inside its body," Julian said.
"Luca~"
Lucario nodded.
Then it punched Steelix. The moment their bodies made contact, there was almost no sound.
The fist stayed pressed against Steelix's body for about three seconds before Lucario pulled its arm back.
As it withdrew, Gemma could clearly see a stream of gray energy being drawn out of Steelix's body.
Lucario compressed that energy into a crystal about the size of half a fist.
It then handed the crystal to Gemma.
"For me?"
"This is the residual energy from that Normal-type sub-Ultimate treasure. Since it's been inside Steelix for half a year, only about this much remains."
"It no longer counts as a sub-Ultimate treasure, but it's still quite good among Normal-type treasures."
"The market price is probably around 50 million."
At that value, it was already considered a very decent treasure—enough to spark competition within a small circle.
