Chapter 406: Mossdeep City Gym Challenge
After handing over the Team Magma members and Archie to Officer Jenny to claim the reward, Ash’s group hitched a ride on a boat directly to Mossdeep City.
Mossdeep City is an island city in the eastern part of the Hoenn region, and because it houses the Mossdeep Space Center, the residents here are quite obsessed with rockets, space, and related culture.
The Mossdeep Gym is also different from other Gyms; it is built directly inside the Mossdeep Space Center, and the Gym Leaders are a pair of twins: an older sister named Nan and a younger brother named Feng.
The battle rules are also quite different; the two siblings enter the field simultaneously, each commanding one Pokemon, while the challenger must send out two Pokemon at once to battle.
This is a special Double Battle; for Ash, it is not very difficult, but for May, it might be rather tricky.
On the first day of arriving in Mossdeep City, Ash’s group was very lucky and happened to witness the Mossdeep Space Center preparing to launch a manned rocket.
In order to witness the rocket launch, Ash and May decided to postpone their Gym Challenge, and during this time, they also became acquainted with the siblings, Nan and Feng, at the Mossdeep Space Center.
The two siblings kindly took Ash and the others to experience the astronaut training equipment inside the Space Center.
And today is the day Ash and the two siblings agreed upon for the Gym Challenge.
The Mossdeep Gym battle field is extremely unique; the ground is laid out to resemble the surface of the moon, and the ceiling is decorated with scale models of planets that can move along specific orbits.
The female referee introduced, "Ash, in this Mossdeep Gym battle field, the field includes not only the ground but also the planets floating in the air as part of the field."
"Okay." Ash nodded.
"The match uses modified Double Battle rules. The Gym Leaders will use Solrock and Lunatone. Conversely, Ash, please bring out two Pokemon to battle. During the match, neither side is allowed to switch Pokemon..."
After the rules were read, the two Gym Leader siblings released their Pokemon first.
Nan used Lunatone, and Feng used Solrock.
"This Mossdeep Gym feels so troublesome! A special Double Battle, and on top of that, you have to think about how to utilize the planetoids..."
This was May’s first time encountering such a troublesome Gym Challenge.
"May, what you said is indeed something to consider, but the key to clearing it actually lies in how to break the opponent’s combined attack," Brock reminded her.
"I guess that’s true, Nan and Feng are two people..."
May thought about it, and her head began to ache.
Ash glanced at their Pokemon, and upon seeing that both were at the Gym Intermediate level, he changed his original plan:
"I choose you, Pikachu, Swellow!"
He had originally intended to use the same type of Pokemon, but since he had the level advantage, it wouldn’t be fun if he went too hard on them.
The most important point was that he challenged them first to force out their trump cards, so that May would have some preparation for her battle tomorrow.
"Siba~" Swellow appeared on the battlefield first.
"Pika-pi, Pi-Pikachu?" (Ash, are you really letting me go?)
Hearing that Ash wanted him to enter the field, Pikachu looked at Ash in disbelief.
Ash nodded and said in a low voice, "Of course, but the main character of this battle is Swellow; you just need to assist and provide backup."
Receiving an affirmative answer, Pikachu jumped into the battle field excitedly.
"I, the little mouse, finally get to battle again!"
Seeing both sides in position, the female referee announced, "The match begins!"
"Solrock, use Tackle!"
"Lunatone, use Tackle!"
The two siblings launched their attacks simultaneously.
Ash commanded, "Swellow, use Aerial Ace; Pikachu, use Quick Attack."
Pikachu knew very well that his appearance was just an insurance policy, so Quick Attack was used only for dodging, and he did not launch a counterattack against the incoming Solrock.
As for Swellow, facing the incoming Lunatone, it spread its wings to evade Lunatone’s attack, then used Aerial Ace to circle behind Lunatone and slammed into it hard.
Lunatone, struck by the Tackle, flew backward and happened to collide with Solrock, which was being led around by Pikachu.
Seeing this scene, Feng shouted directly at Nan, "Your Lunatone is getting in my way!"
"Why don’t you say it’s your Solrock that’s blocking the way!" Nan retorted, refusing to be outdone.
"It’s clearly your fault; if Lunatone hadn’t run over, I would have already taken care of that Pikachu."
"Bullshit, it’s clearly your Solrock that’s being led around like a dog..."
The two siblings started arguing immediately.
"What are they doing?" May looked at the two in confusion.
"They don’t seem to have any coordination at all. Or are they hiding their skills, waiting for Ash to take the bait?"
As soon as the thought of them hiding their skills arose, Brock dismissed it. Ash had even sent out Pikachu; if the opponents were still trying to play the pig to eat the tiger, they would likely end up becoming actual pigs by the end of it.
"Swellow, use Steel Wing; Pikachu, use Double Team."
Swellow unleashed Steel Wing, charging straight at Lunatone, and slammed its wing into it, sending it flying into the air and crashing into a planetoid.
Pikachu’s Double Team pinned down Solrock, making it afraid to move an inch.
At this moment, the two siblings came back to their senses and stopped arguing.
"Lunatone, use Psybeam to counterattack!"
"Solrock, use Solar Beam."
Lunatone and Solrock aimed at Pikachu and the others, preparing to unleash a big move.
"Pikachu, Swellow, time it right and dodge by crossing paths."
Hearing Ash’s command, Pikachu and Swellow understood the meaning instantly, and they burst forward at high speed toward each other.
The moment they crossed, two beams shot toward them, but before they could hit Pikachu and the others, the two beams collided and the damage was neutralized.
"Can you stop getting in my way? From that angle, you should have had Lunatone use Hypnosis to control Pikachu and create an opportunity for Solrock!"
"No, that’s wrong! Lunatone should have attacked, and Solrock should have provided support!"
"Sigh..." Seeing the two siblings fall into an argument again, Ash could only command helplessly, "Swellow, use Hyper Beam; Pikachu, use Iron Tail."
He had originally thought they were holding back a big move, but he hadn’t expected them to end up making a mess of things.
With such fragmented teamwork, Ash was certain that the two siblings were absolutely no match for May; as long as May fought normally, she would win easily.
Plan accomplished; there was no need to keep playing around.
Swellow’s target this time was Solrock, and to ensure a one-hit kill, Swellow dove down, unleashing its big move right in Solrock’s face.
Seeing that Swellow had chosen its target, Pikachu turned into a yellow bolt of lightning, appeared in front of Lunatone, and used Iron Tail to slap it hard across the face.
As Lunatone and Solrock collapsed one after the other, the female referee looked helplessly at the two siblings who had just come to their senses and raised her flag, announcing, "Solrock and Lunatone are unable to battle, so the winner of this Gym Challenge is Ash from Pallet Town!"
Hearing this result, Feng said with an angry expression, "It’s all your fault! If you hadn’t been in the way, how could we have lost this match!"
"The one who was in the way was clearly you, okay? If your Solrock hadn’t been led around like a dog by Pikachu and you couldn’t handle it, we wouldn’t have lost." Nan also started shouting.
After the two finished shifting the blame, they still handed the Gym badge, the Mind Badge, to Ash
