Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary

Chapter 600 - 600 An Exploitable Weakness

Avery was still on the backfoot even with his own weapon equal to what Matthias was wielding.

He was truthfully a bit stronger and faster, but there was a great deal of difference between their level of skill.

Matthias had trained extensively with his chosen melee weapon, while this was really the first time that Avery was fighting with a metal rod.

Still, he was able to keep up better than before thanks to no longer being at a disadvantage in terms of range.

His laser pistol had basically been of no use against Matthias, so he was not even counting that weapon.

For several minutes the two of them continued to spar, with Avery almost entirely on the defensive.

Whenever he did find an opening to strike, it was almost always a trap that Matthias used to deliver a devastating counter.

Despite obviously losing the fight, Avery could not help smiling as he continued to trade blows with his opponent.

Matthias was incredible. Able to fight better than anyone Avery had ever met before.

And this was him with just combat armor and a single metal rod as a weapon.

He could only imagine how strong the head of the Kaizer Fleet could be when fully equipped.

After a couple more minutes, Avery lost his footing for a fraction of a second when Matthias suddenly leapt back several meters.

Immediately, Avery righted his posture and moved into a defensive stance to defend against the assault he was certain would be coming to punish his minor mistake.

Yet, Matthias made no moves to close the distance, instead he just stared at Avery with an appraising look.

"Hm, I think that I might be able to test something out with you. Best prepare yourself." Matthias said, his lips curled up into a smirk that reminded Avery a bit of Liesel.

However, while with her it was usually playful, Avery suddenly felt a sense of immense danger.

He was uncertain if this was just in his head or due to something else, but he did not doubt that Matthias was about to become an even greater threat than he already was.

Avery braced himself for whatever was about to occur. Except, he never could have imagined what was going to happen next.

Matthias rushed at him, and he prepared to meet the charge.

That was when everything suddenly changed.

The lighting in the room suddenly shifted and Avery was blinded by flashes of color that quickly made him feel sick.

Vertigo hit Avery hard, and it took everything he had just to stay on his feet.

'F*ck! What is this?'

Avery shut his eyes to block out the lights.

And though this worked, it did leave him blinded.

In the next moment, he felt a heavy impact against his stomach, and he was sent flying across the room.

The wind had been knocked out of him, and when Avery inevitably crashed into a wall, he felt his entire body shaken up.

Trying to move elicited sharp pain in several places, and Avery could tell that he had broken bones in several places. Which was quite a feat considering how tough he was.

Thankfully his body's regeneration swiftly kicked in, and the damage began to mend.

With a grunt Avery pulled himself out of the dent in the reinforced material that he had been lodged into.

Momentarily he opened his eyes, but the horrid colors of light were still there.

'I really don't want to permanently break anything here. Yet I can't just let this keep going on.' Avery thought as he activated his psionic abilities to try and find and eliminate the source of power the sickening lights were using.

Except, as Avery did so, he found himself perceiving the wavelengths of light on an entirely new level.

He had thought that he was capable of processing a great deal of information all at once and usually had no trouble reading the flow of energy.

However, whatever this light was, it horribly messed up his head when he attempted to use his extrasensory perception.

Queasiness unlike anything Avery had ever experienced hit him like a heavy cruiser.

Unable to stay upright, he collapsed to his hands and knees.

Clamping his right hand over his mouth, he barely prevented himself from throwing up.

Once Avery had ceased using his psionic abilities, he was able to start slowly recovering, but there was still a lingering feeling of sickness.

His mind starting to clear a bit, Avery felt like something similar to this had happened before.

It took him a moment to recall due to his mind being so muddled, but this was close to the weakness and pain he had experienced when subjected to the frequency that Layton Sarelett had used to incapacitate him.

At first Avery thought that this was all just some sort of coincidence. Though that was just because his mind still was not working properly.

When he really considered it, Avery knew that Matthias had been probing and testing him since they had met.

The man had been trying to figure out what made Avery tick, and now he had confirmed it.

Most people did not even know about being like him that Avery had heard called Awakened. So, he had not been on guard against Matthias learning about him.

Except, if he thought about it, Zefield, another seven star mercenary, had some experience with a powerful psionic user.

With the Kaizer Fleet being the largest and oldest mercenary group in the entire Dramid Alliance, it would not be surprising if Matthias knew something about the awakened.

'What are his intentions here though?'

It was unclear what Matthias wanted to do with this information.

Perhaps he was just curious to confirm whether his suspicions were true or not.

Or maybe he had some other more sister plans for Avery.

As much as he had gotten good vibes from Liesel's great grandfather, Avery did not really know the man.

Everything up until now could have just been an act to lower his guard.
