The corridor was quiet except for the hum of damaged electronics. Sparks dropped from the ruined digital lock on the titanium blast door, hissing as they hit the wet concrete.

Lord Varek Drossian stood backed against the reinforced metal door. His face was as pale as paper, and his expensive vest was drenched in cold sweat.

His eyes shifted from the smoking lock to the massive, six-foot Frost-Bane Cleaver resting in Evren’s right hand.

"Crawford... wait," Varek stammered, holding up both hands with trembling fingers. "Let’s be reasonable here. There’s no need for this to go any further."

Evren didn’t answer; he took one step forward.

Zephyra lay on the bottom step of the concrete staircase. Her arms and legs were still bound behind her back with thick zip-ties, and a dark bruise was swelling along her temple.

She looked up at Evren with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her breath caught in her throat as she realized he had actually driven all the way into District Nine just to find her.

"I have money, Crawford," Varek blabbered in a desperate voice. "More money than you can imagine! I have secret accounts in offshore banks, bearer bonds, and twenty percent of the shipping docks in District Four. It’s all yours! I’ll sign the deeds over to you right now!"

Evren looked down at him with flat, emotionless eyes. "You think this is about money, Varek?"

Varek swallowed hard. "I can give you political backing in the High Council! Elder Caldwell and three other ministers owe me favors. I can make Apex untouchable in the Imperial Capital. Just let me walk out of here!"

"You sent armed thugs to kidnap someone under my roof," Evren said, stopping three paces in front of him. "You don’t have anything I want."

Varek’s chest heaved with shallow, panicked breaths.

Looking into Evren’s cold eyes, Varek realized that no amount of gold or political power would save him. A desperate, wild madness flickered in his bloodshot eyes.

"Fine..." Varek muttered, slowly sinking down onto his knees in the dust. "I surrender. I give up, Crawford. Just... don’t kill me."

Varek lowered his head, placing both hands flat on the floor as if submitting completely. But under the cover of his loose dark vest, Varek’s right fingers slipped into his inner pocket.

Tucked against his ribcage was a concealed, spring-loaded sleeve launcher loaded with three needle-thin darts coated in lethal venom.

Varek knew he couldn’t land a direct hit on an S-Rank fighter who had a giant cleaver ready to parry. But Zephyra was lying right beside the steps... bound, helpless, and closer to him. If Crawford cared enough about this crippled girl to smash an SUV through a brick wall for her, targeting her would force him into a panic!

"If I’m going down, your little pet dies with me!" Varek shrieked, pressing the hidden trigger.

THWIP!

Three black, venom-dripping darts shot through the air with a high-pitched hiss, flying straight toward Zephyra.

Zephyra’s eyes widened in horror. With her hands and feet bound, she had no way to roll aside or dodge.

Through his passive skill, the blue trajectory lines of the incoming darts flashed across his vision before Varek even finished pulling the trigger.

Stepping smoothly across the concrete floor, Evren planted his body directly between Zephyra and the incoming projectiles.

He brought up the flat of the Frost-Bane Cleaver.

CLINK! CLINK! CLINK!

The three poisoned needles struck the frozen steel, bouncing harmlessly onto the wet ground and sizzling as the venom touched the puddles.

Varek’s face froze in despair.

Before he could reach for anything else, Evren swung the Frost-Bane Cleaver in a swift, decisive counter-stroke.

The blade sliced through the air with the crushing force of an S-Rank titan.

Varek gasped as pale blue ice instantly covered his body, freezing him where he knelt. A moment later, his frozen form crumbled to the floor, shattering into harmless ice crystals.

The corridor fell completely silent.

Light footsteps echoed from the top of the stairwell, and Amber came running down the steps with her twin crystalline blades in hand.

"Evren!" Amber called out, stopping at the base of the stairs and looking around at the shattered frost on the floor. "I took care of the other assassin upstairs. Is everyone alright?"

"We’re fine," Evren said, lowering the giant cleaver.

Amber rushed over to Zephyra, immediately kneeling beside her on the cold step. "Let me get these off of you."

Drawing one of her blades, she carefully sliced through the thick mana-suppression ties around Zephyra’s wrists and ankles.

The ties snapped, and Zephyra slowly pulled her stiff hands in front of her chest, gasping softly in relief.

"You’re safe now," Amber said gently, supporting her bruised shoulder.

At that moment, a bright golden window flashed across Evren’s vision:

[DING!]

[PROXIMITY RADAR: STAGE 2 CATALYST #3 DETECTED!]

[TARGET ITEM: FROST-CRYSTAL MOON-ESSENCE]

[LOCATION: INSIDE SUBTERRANEAN REINFORCED VAULT (3 METERS AHEAD)]

Evren looked at the massive titanium blast door behind where Varek had been standing.

The digital keypad was completely destroyed from the earlier shockwave, and the locking bolts were firmly stuck in place.

Evren walked up to the thick metal door. He wedged the tip of the Frost-Bane Cleaver into the narrow seam between the door and the reinforced concrete wall.

Gripping the hilt with both hands, he pulled hard, using the heavy blade like a crowbar.

The internal bolts snapped with a loud crunch, and the metal door popped open a couple of feet... just wide enough for him to walk through.

Inside was a secure, climate-controlled private vault.

The room was lined with steel shelves holding stacks of bearer bonds, rare alchemical ingredients, and crates of high-grade mana crystals.

And sitting in the center of a glass pedestal under a soft spotlight was a cylindrical cryogenic containment case.

Inside the case rested a pale-blue crystal the size of a fist. It glowed with a soft, radiant light that looked like moonlight captured in solid ice, pulsing with pure, cooling mana.

Evren walked into the vault and picked up the case.

The cool surface of the glass felt soothing against his fingers.

[DING!]

[SYSTEM ALERT: STAGE 2 ELIXIR SYNTHESIS UNLOCKED! RETURN TO A CONTROLLED FACILITY TO BEGIN BREWING!]

Evren tapped his Spatial Storage Ring with his thumb, and the cryogenic case vanished inside with a soft shimmer of silver light.

"That’s all three," Evren murmured to himself with a faint smile.

He walked back out of the vault and returned to the stairs to see Amber, sitting beside Zephyra, gently holding her upright.

Evren knelt down on one knee in front of Zephyra. He unbuttoned his suit jacket, took it off, and draped the warm fabric around her shivering shoulders.

The warm coat smelled of clean cedar and faint mana.

Zephyra clutched the lapels of the jacket with her stiff fingers, her entire body shaking.

She looked up at Evren’s calm face, and the tears she had been holding back finally spilled over her cheeks, running down her bruised skin.

"Why... why did you come for me?" Zephyra whispered. "I ran away... I brought Varek’s men right to you. I’m just a broken cripple who cost you a hundred million dollars... why would you risk your life for me when all I’ve caused you is trouble?"

Evren reached out and gently placed his hand on the side of her head, lightly brushing a damp strand of hair behind her ear.

"You didn’t cost me anything, Zephyra," Evren said in a gentle, firm voice. "And you didn’t bring trouble."

Zephyra’s breath trembled as she looked into his steady amber eyes.

"You’re family, Z..., and nobody touches what’s mine."

Those words felt like a warm sunbeam to Zephyra, melting away years of cold, dark abuse.

All the fear, guilt, and loneliness she had carried since she was a child seemed to melt away in that single moment. She buried her face into the collar of his jacket, letting out a soft, breathless sob as she leaned against him.

Amber smiled gently, placing a comforting hand on Zephyra’s back.

A brilliant cascade of golden light exploded across Evren’s field of vision:

[DING!]

Evren looked at the glowing notifications with quiet satisfaction.

He slid his arms under Zephyra’s knees and back, lifting her gently in a bridal carry. She rested her head against his chest, closing her eyes.

"Let’s go home," Evren said to Amber.
