Chapter 787: Walker Grant, Just Give Up

Chloe Reed didn’t avoid the question this time. Holding her phone, she typed, "I am worried about him. I’m wondering when his eyes will heal."

A profound glimmer flickered in Preston Vance’s eyes. "If his eyes never heal, you’ll feel guilty forever. Am I right?"

Chloe looked at him, then typed, "Shouldn’t I feel guilty? He ended up like this because of me."

Preston sighed helplessly. "Actually, there’s no need for you to feel guilty at all. This was his choice. He did it willingly."

Chloe’s lips twitched as she typed, "Then wouldn’t I be completely heartless? Even though I want to divorce him, I want both of us to live well separately. I don’t hate him enough to wish he were dead."

"You’re still too soft-hearted," Preston concluded bluntly. "And he knows exactly how to exploit that. That’s why he repeatedly disregards his own safety and throws himself into danger—so that you have no choice but to keep him in your sights and in your heart." Pausing for a moment, Preston frowned and gave his final verdict. "He is incredibly calculating."

Chloe was speechless. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. Did she really not know? But the damage had already been done. There was no point in digging into his motives now.

Preston pushed up his glasses. "But I’ve thought about it. If it were me, I might have done the exact same thing. Simply because I wouldn’t know how else to make you stay."

Chloe’s expression faltered. She thought of Walker Grant, of how he had confessed his feelings to her time and time again, looking so pitiful and helpless. Every time she didn’t respond, he would look incredibly lonely and heartbroken. Even though he had promised to agree to a divorce once he recovered, he was still unwilling to let go, wasn’t he?

There was no need for further proof. His attitude was crystal clear. As long as she wanted him, all she had to do was nod or beckon, and he would come right to her side.

They dropped the subject. Chloe put on a sleep mask and rested for a while. When the high-speed rail finally arrived at the station, she was completely surprised to run into Annie York at the exit.

Wearing a shy smile, Annie looked at her with bright eyes. "Chloe, are you surprised?"

Chloe nodded and typed, "Why are you here?"

"I called Grandma," Annie explained. "She said you were coming back today, so I checked the schedule and guessed you’d arrive around this time. That’s why I came here to wait for you." She stepped forward and gave her a hug. "Chloe, I missed you so much."

Chloe smiled faintly, then typed, "Thank you for picking me up. Let me treat you to a meal."

Annie didn’t refuse.

Preston chimed in from the side, "Can I join? I’m starving too."

Chloe gave him a helpless glance and nodded. Of course he could. They had traveled back together, so one extra person for a meal wouldn’t matter.

Preston smiled. "My driver is here to pick me up, so we might as well go together. We’ll grab some food first, and then I need to head back to the company."

Chloe nodded, and the three of them got into his car.

"Huh?"

Daniel Hayes hurried over, only to freeze when he saw Chloe getting into another man’s car.

He immediately looked back at Walker Grant, who was sitting inside their car, and said, "Chloe left with her friends. You’re a step too late."

Fiona Linton leaned against the car window and looked out, unable to hold back a few clicks of her tongue. "TSK TSK. Oh my, when destiny calls, you just can’t block it. I think that handsome guy is pretty great. He’s been taking such good care of Chloe. Walker Grant, why don’t you just give up? Your rival is seriously tough."
