Chapter 140: Fighting the Church of Light, Your God Won’t Save You
Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Fighting the Church of Light, Your God Won’t Save You
Fwoosh!
Leon moved like a shadow, continuously avoiding the countless [Light Balls] that rushed toward him one after another.
Some he sidestepped with precise footwork, others he cut cleanly in half with his [Power Sword], the blade slicing through the glowing spheres before they could explode.
At the same time, the spells he had cast earlier reached their target.
Or rather… they should have.
Light Barrier!
A radiant dome flared around LightMessenger, expanding outward in a smooth golden arc.
Leon’s spells collided against it almost simultaneously.
Boom! Crackle! Shatter!
And yet, the barrier held.
Not only did it hold, it absorbed the impact with shocking ease.
Leon’s eyes narrowed.
’The hell?’
He did not like overestimating himself. That led to mistakes.
But he knew his own attributes well enough to judge the situation accurately.
His [Spirit] stat was significantly higher than LightMessenger’s.
With [Supreme Spirit Enhancement (S-Level)] amplifying his output, he should have dominated any direct spell exchange.
And yet, his spells had been blocked as if they were nothing more than average attacks.
That wasn’t normal.
For nearly a full minute, the battle continued in that rhythm.
Leon advanced steadily, weaving through incoming light projectiles while launching spell after spell.
LightMessenger remained largely stationary, relying on his glowing barrier to neutralize everything Leon threw at him.
The barrier did not even flicker.
“Do you not see?” the archbishop said with a confident grin, clearly amused. “You stand no chance. You are nothing more than a stepping stone for the [God of Light].”
Leon’s expression did not change.
He dashed forward again, but this time he did something different.
Instead of targeting LightMessenger, he shifted his focus.
His gaze moved past the archbishop and locked onto the priests gathered near the gate.
He raised his staff.
Powerful Fireball!
A blazing sphere of fire formed instantly at the tip of his [Void Staff +3] and shot forward toward a cluster of priests.
The reaction was immediate.
Several of them panicked, stumbling backward as the fireball closed in.
But before it could reach them—
Fwoosh!
LightMessenger vanished from his original position and reappeared directly in front of the priests.
The golden barrier flared once more.
Boom!
The fireball exploded harmlessly against it.
“T-Thank you, Archbishop!” the priests cried as they dropped to their knees. “You truly are the greatest!”
“I would never abandon my subjects,” LightMessenger replied with a warm, almost benevolent smile.
To an outsider, it might have looked like noble leadership.
A protector shielding his followers. But Leon knew better.
“I get it now,” he muttered quietly.
In his previous life, LightMessenger had been infamous in the [Higher Domain].
He was known as a ruthless and calculating figure who would sacrifice hundreds of followers without hesitation if it served the [God of Light]’s interests.
He did not value lives. He valued faith and power.
And he also valued his own position. So why was he protecting them now?
Leon’s eyes sharpened.
“You wouldn’t want your power sources to die, would you?” he said calmly.
And for the first time since the battle began, LightMessenger’s expression shifted. Just slightly.
’How does this human…?’ He did not finish the thought.
Storm of Lightning! Ice Spikes!
Leon did not give him time.
Lightning exploded outward in a wide area-of-effect surge, crackling violently across the battlefield.
At the same time, jagged ice spikes erupted from the ground in multiple directions.
Zap! Crack! Pierce!
Unlike single-target spells, [Storm of Lightning] covered too much ground for LightMessenger to block everything perfectly.
Several priests were struck directly.
Their bodies convulsed under the overwhelming current before collapsing lifelessly to the ground.
The ice spikes claimed others, piercing through robes.
Leon’s [Spirit] output was no joke. With his sub-talent amplifying his magical damage, even high-level players could not withstand a direct hit.
LightMessenger’s jaw tightened as he watched his followers fall.
“YOU’RE ALL USELESS!” he roared. “STAY ALIVE! I NEED YOUR ENERGY!”
The remaining priests trembled.
“S-Sorry!”
They hurried closer to him, forming a tighter circle around Leon.
Their scepters glowed brighter, and Leon could feel the divine energy flowing between them.
It became clear. Each priest was feeding power into the archbishop.
Their faith, their mana, their devotion, all of it strengthened LightMessenger.
And as more of them died, that shared power weakened.
Light Beam!
The archbishop retaliated with another golden blast, but Leon met it head-on.
Blood Beam!
The two attacks collided once more, red and gold tearing through the air before exploding.
This time, LightMessenger’s expression carried a trace of uncertainty.
The next few minutes turned into a slaughter.
LightMessenger attempted to pressure Leon with spells and close-range attacks, but Leon’s combat experience far surpassed his opponent’s.
He fought efficiently, conserving stamina where possible, dodging precisely, and striking only when it mattered.
More importantly, he focused on the priests.
Slash! Boom! Crackle!
One by one, they fell.
Despite watching their comrades die, many remained close to LightMessenger, desperate to continue empowering him.
Their devotion blinded them to reality. Leon felt no hesitation.
Every one of them willingly served the [God of Light].
They supported LightMessenger’s future ascension.
They would have caused unimaginable harm later.
To Leon, that was enough. Eventually, the battlefield grew quiet.
The golden aura around LightMessenger flickered weakly.
No more priests stood behind him. Only corpses.
Now, there were just two figures remaining.
Leon stood calmly, his [Power Sword] stained with blood.
LightMessenger stood opposite him, his expression complicated.
Rage, disbelief, and something close to fear flickered in his eyes.
“You will regret this,” the archbishop said through clenched teeth. “You have no idea what you have done.”
Leon simply smiled.
Fwoosh!
He closed the distance instantly.
LightMessenger attempted to respond with a desperate spell, but—
SLASH!
Leon’s blade flashed.
The archbishop’s right hand flew into the air, severed cleanly at the wrist. His golden scepter clattered to the ground.
“Argh!” LightMessenger staggered back, clutching the stump.
Without his followers and without his weapon, his combat ability dropped dramatically.
He tried to channel magic again, but the golden aura around him was unstable and weak.
For the first time, he looked truly defenseless. He dropped to his knees.
Looking up at Leon, he finally understood the gap between them.
There was no grand divine intervention.
In desperation, LightMessenger lowered his head and began to pray.
Leon watched him for a brief moment.
“Your god won’t come to save you,” Leon spoke, “Not only because he can’t, but because even if he did, he wouldn’t bat an eye at your death, he has many servants far stronger than you will ever be.”
LightMessenger’s head snapped up, fury blazing in his eyes.
“You—”
He did not finish.
SLASH!
Leon’s blade moved one final time.
The archbishop’s head separated cleanly from his body.
It hit the ground with a dull thud.
Fortunately for Leon, [Resurrection Stones] were still exceedingly rare in the [Lower Domain]. Almost no one possessed them.
This death was permanent.
Leon stared at the corpse for a few seconds, his expression unreadable.
Then a faint grin spread across his face.
“Well,” he muttered, “I guess the [God of Light] truly didn’t care about you that much.”
Ding!
[You have killed several players and taken one item from each from their “Storage Space”.]
[Unfortunately, your “Storage Space” is full so the remaining items will not drop.]
Leon barely reacted.
But then—
Ding!
[You have taken 5% of all the players’ Eternal Coins, gaining 178,390 Eternal Coins in the process.]
Leon blinked.
Then he checked his total balance.
“…Alright, never mind,” he said slowly, a wide grin forming on his face. “This thing is amazing.”
