“It certainly is something, we feel, looking around at the true Tower.” The Queen, Liz, spoke up with an odd aura of calm, as she surveyed the Boundary side of the Tower, with its heaps of ancient treasures and relics, all piled around the cavernous room lit by flickering green and purple flames. “We are pleased to finally be able to see what our family, and those before us, protected all these long centuries. It is rather humbling, we think.”

“I don’t know about that.” Henry, who was also here, had a rather strained expression on his face, especially as he stared down at the large, burned circle of stone amidst the treasures. The rest had been moved aside, but the scar, which still prickled and stung our skin, baleful adherence almost impregnated into the seared floor, was a stark reminder to him of his near-fatal experience. “I must say seeing it again leaves me with mixed feelings.”

He then turned to the Diamond Sheild Knights who had accompanied us, the dozen men, despite being appraised of just what they’d be encountering here, suitably awed, David smirking nastily behind them.

I have a feeling that David’s going to put them through their paces in the southern coastal campaign later. Oh, well, it’ll do them good…

My thoughts overlapped with Henry’s words, as he scratched at his face, perhaps remembering the terrible burns he’d suffered. “But then, it all worked out.” He was suddenly smiling again, which caused Ellie to click her tongue with exasperation. “After all, that bugger Max, or whoever he really was, got burned too, and he didn’t have a useful brother-in-law to come and fix him up, did he?”

“Henry!” Ellie hissed, remembering the sorrow she’d felt at his injuries, eyes hard, while Liz simply tittered and raised a hand, holding the Sovereign’s Sceptre, the Cullinan I diamond atop it glittering with aether and adherence.

“We can hardly approve of your recklessness, young Henry, but you did serve in the military a long time, and an older brother should protect his younger sister, even if he should know his limits.” As Henry laughed sheepishly, her gaze strayed to my own sis, who was with us now, along with a number of other people, including my girlfriends, vassals and a couple of special guests. “Now then, we open the vaults of the Tower to you all, as agreed for Eleanor’s safety and rescue. Though now… it is more as a token of our two nations joining together as one. So do not stand on ceremony. Eleanor, if you will please explain?”

“Fine then.” She glanced at my sis too, and at our patents, who had followed along, mom seeming a little lost, but father was carefully observing everything. I suppose I can hardly complain. He is trying to learn the lessons I want to teach here, even if it’s extremely difficult for him to bend his own viewpoints and understanding.

“In that case, while most of you have been told about the Tower, to summarise, you are looking to see if any of the treasures here will become yours. There are no guarantees, I’m afraid, it depends on the nature of the treasures. They are… quite fickle.” She glanced at Tsurugi, still sleeping in her sword form and digesting her meal, her mental snores gentle. “I suppose now I understand, having seen an equally choosy treasure. Anyway, just search around, and you’ll know.”

“That’s right.” Shiro spoke up. She was here too, and ostentatiously wore her Mantle Of Tegau Gold-Breast, the cloth-of-gold quite magnificent here in the Boundary. “Just as I knew that a treasure for a faithful woman was for me!”

“There’s no need to show off, Shiro. Besides, you’re not here for yourself today, are you?” Ellie added dryly, and Shiro’s hair and eyes flamed red, yellow and crimson flames dotting her long, scarlet hair, as Tan took over.

“Indeed. I am here for myself, yet…” she glanced around with a touch of amusement. “…compared to my Palace and what lies within, the treasures here are crude.”

“You don’t have to take one…” Ellie sighed, and Tan shook her head.

“Oh, do not mistake me, Eleanor. I shall take whatever is offered. Just as I would take water to quench my thirst.”

As they bickered playfully, I took over. “Anyway…” I gazed out at the crowd. A few (Treyvon and Luciana, for example) couldn’t be here, but before us weren’t just my fiancées and girlfriends who hadn’t received treasures yet, Tsukiko, Yukiko, Tan, obviously, Miyu, Michiru, Haru and Yu-mi. Then there were my vassals. Suzu was looking around with excitement, the long skirt of her black and purple velvet dress brushing the stone ground. Shuta-san had the strange, panicked stare which showed he was wondering why he was even here, and Violet was watching with some interest, idly tapping a pile of jumbled weapons and armour with one foot. Her brother is technically due one as well. I suppose when we link Korea to the Ring Gate Hub…

Lastly, Bunta-san was present, though he’d moved as far away from Tan as possible, still clearly holding feelings of fear towards her. Oh, and Kanami-chan is here too, and also Chiaki-chan and Chiasa-chan. Those three weren’t part of the agreement, but Ellie herself had suggested the twins, grateful for all their help, and as for Kanami-chan, we’d discussed it, and not only would it help her settle in now she was estranged from her family, but it would be a boost in morale for her fellow warriors of Adamant as well.

“…we don’t have all day. I know you’re all eager to get going to help Ellie and Britain out by dealing with a troublesome enclave of enemies, so get to it!” I clapped my hands playfully, and everyone immediately started moving throughout the Tower chamber, searching through the piles. Some wore looks of intense concentration, others were more relaxed, and as I fell back, my Eyes glowing, a little dizzy at all the myriad descriptions of treasures projected across my vision like I was watching a stream on niconico, I joined Henry, Liz, my parents and Eri’s.

“Should we really be here?” Junpei asked, his nervousness plain, but Liz waved one hand, dismissing such a thought.

“If you shouldn’t be, then I wouldn’t have allowed it, Eleanor neither.” She was back addressing us informally, not as the monarch. “We take our duties extremely seriously. As does your son.” She winked playfully at me, waving the Sceptre. “I must confess, I’m looking forward to trying this out in battle!”

Henry pulled a face at that. “Are you sure we can’t persuade you to relent, grandmother? This isn’t a fun jaunt down to the beach, you know? It won’t be all deckchairs, rock and winkles.”

“Oh, I am well aware of that, young Henry.” Liz met my gaze, a small, knowing smile on her lips. I could almost hear her thoughts, saying that she knew with me there it would be safe, but that wasn’t my intention for the trip. “Even so, while I shall abdicate soon enough, and let your sister take her rightful place as Protector of the Realm, this came to pass in my reign, so if I do not at least strike one blow against the enemies of the Crown, I’ll not sleep well at night. Not without a great deal more brandy, that’s certain!”

“Akio, please keep an eye on her…” Henry pleaded, and I nodded.

“I will. It’ll be a war, from what I’ve heard tell of the situation, but I’ll make sure she stays in the rear, alongside my parents.”

“How mean of you.” Liz pouted, seeming far younger, her blue eyes twinkling mirthfully. “But I suppose I must bow to the experience of the commander on the field, my dear Duke.”

“Yeah, now that stresses me out…” I chuckled. “Even if, technically, I already became a Duke when Shaeula conquered the Spring and was entrusted with it.” Speaking of Shaeula, she, Eri, and the others who already had treasures were organising the details for the upcoming operation.

“But yes…” I continued. “…seeing is believing. I think it’ll do her good, Henry. As it will you all.” I nodded at my parents and uncle and auntie.

“I shall watch with open eyes, Akio.” Father promised, before he glanced at Aiko, who was weighing a bow in her hands, before putting it down, a trace regretfully, and moving on. Father then spoke to Liz. “Excuse me if I am speaking out of turn, but… I understand the placement of everyone here, except Aiko. She is... not his lover, and not his Vassal, so…”

I snorted at that, pointing to the Hikawa twins, who were silently communicating with each other as they wandered off to one sheltered corner of the cavernous room. “I assure you that Chiaki-chan and Chiasa-chan aren’t my lovers either. I’m not a pervert. And they aren’t Vassals, as they don’t have a Favour.” Yet, anyway. They have incredible elemental compatibility, only missing darkness from the Primary Seven…

“Your daughter and I had a lovely chat the other day.” Liz smiled warmly. “She’s a fascinating, feisty young woman. Honestly, you should be proud of her. Unlike Eleanor, whose duty was always to fight, to suffer, for the good of all, your daughter chose that path out of friendship and compassion. It’s only natural we would let her take a treasure. After all… she is the sister of my new grandson-in-law, and a treasure greater to him than anything here within the Tower, yes?”

“When you say it like that, I’m embarrassed.” Indeed, I did allow my face to go a little red. “But you’re right. My sister’s happiness and safety are everything to me. I want you all to understand that, if nothing else.” I stared at my parents firmly, while mother-in-law Hana was smiling in a very secretive manner, her eyes glinting oddly.

“But I realised, just as I have with Eri, with everyone else, I have to let them grow, make their own decisions. And I’ll support them, and if the road ahead is rocky, I’ll bulldoze through for them. If the road is full of enemies, I’ll be there, Tsurugi in hand…” I paused, smiling at Liz and Henry. “…that goes for Ellie too, of course. But… if it’s a trial they can only face themselves, I can’t do it for them. But I can prepare them to the best of my ability, support them through it, and either comfort or praise them afterwards. I don’t do anything lightly or recklessly anymore. Eri’s wounds, Shiro’s injuries… Tsukiko’s passing… all of those cruel events have taught me what matters. Perhaps you think I’ve grown arrogant, dad, mom… but no, I’m now just not running.”

“It’s certainly complicated.” Haru smiled, appearing behind us. “Trust me, I know more than most how your son, and indeed, your daughter, thinks, Oshiro-san, Oshiro-chan…”

“I think you can call me Taichi.” Father scratched his head. “After all, you are a professional woman, Suzuki-san…”

“Then please, call me Haru. I may be taking things slowly, but your son and I are dating with a resolve to spend our lives, and indeed, my afterlife, together. And I’m not that much different in age to your son.”

“Call me Emily too…” mom nodded, though her usual exuberance was missing, and that irked me.

“You should be more thrilled, mom. Otherwise it’s not fair to Haru. She’s going to make as wonderful a daughter-in-law as any!”

“I know. I know.” Mom’s tone was slightly bitter, and Haru, ever adept at navigating social situations, changed the subject.

Which is indeed the reason I came here. Take it slow. Even we struggle with things, so… it’s understandable they’re angry and frustrated. Snapping back won’t get you anywhere.

I know. That’s why talking to Yu-mi’s mother Ju-eun was helpful. We had a discussion, heated, but fair. Anyway…

Yes. “I wanted to show off. I’m first.” Haru smiled, cradling the treasure the Tower had provided her. “Here, take a look.” In her hand, she held what looked like a Roman short sword. A gladius, I think they were called?

Legatus Legionis Lucius Aemilius Magnus’ Gladius [Item Class: Noble] [Item Type: Rule]

This Roman gladius was wielded by the Legion commander Lucius Aemilius Magnus as he commanded the final campaign of the Legio IX Hispana, the Ninth Spanish Legion which vanished in the mists of the North, no man ever returning. The blade carries a great resentment for the living, and the Geas bound within will cause any living wielder who is touched by fog to turn this blade upon themselves.

The sword carries a significant Darkness Elemental energy and also has the ability to strike and cut the intangible and reduce a wounded target’s Fortune for a brief time, for the fate of the lost Ninth Legion was cruel indeed, one more conflict between mortals and spiritual beings which ended in annihilation.

As I read out the description, Henry chuckled. “That’s surprising. I had thought the lost Ninth a mere myth. More fool me, I suppose. Ellie always did say I wasn’t the brightest…”

“Your U-grade in History should have told you that. But yes, it does amaze me, the rich history of these Isles. That would have been before the world changed, yes?” Liz asked me, and having successfully distracted mom and father again, I nodded.

“Yes. I think so. Anyway, it looks like you won’t be affected by that Geas, Haru.”

“I’m not letting you test it!” Haru chuckled, clutching it to her chest. “If you touch it, Tsurugi will wake up and eat it! Yes, the darkness inside is… potent. Resentment, fear, hatred… but fortunately, I am no stranger to that and can tame it.” Indeed, she let her Light Of Muted Emotions shine, bathing the sword, and fragments of rust flaked off, leaving the metallic blade rippling with blue and indigo light.

“That… sounds burdensome.” father spoke slowly. “For a young woman such as yourself…”

“Yes. I’d definitely have refused, did I get a choice. Not everyone was as charitable as Ortlinde.” Haru shook her head. “But I didn’t. And if it was just me, I couldn’t carry such burdens. But I’m no longer alone. It’s hard for those not involved to know, to understand. But…” She flourished the gladius, blue light flashing on the tip. “…you’re very fortunate indeed. You have a son, and indeed, many new daughters-in-law, to help you understand, Taichi-san, Emily-san.”

“Yes. you are all very… proactive. Keen, even.” father agreed.

“I am keen too.” Tsukiko was the next to return, a coincidence, perhaps. When mom saw her approaching, she glanced away, face red, and it seemed she was regretting some of her conversation yesterday, but Tsukiko was too elegant and gentle to pay that any mind. “For I too was chosen.”

“Oh…” Haru peered over curiously. “That’s prettier than mine.”

“Indeed. And the symbolism is quite nice.” Tsukiko held a bronze and silver mirror in her hands, circular like the moon, and it was decorated in three layers of Celtic knotwork. “I only spotted it because Aiko moved a pile of other treasures, and it called to me. I must thank her.”

Mom bit her lip at Tsukiko’s words, before blurting out an apology. “Tsukiko-chan, I’m very sorry, I shouldn’t have said…”

“It is fine, mother-in-law.” Tsukiko forestalled that apology with a raised hand. “I understand your distress. But it is not I who needs your words of contrition. No, it is Aiko and Eri…”

“I know, but… Eri was so fierce!” Emily sighed, before forcing a smile on her face. “Anyway, I suppose we should look at your mirror, Tsukiko-chan!”

Allowing the clumsy change of subject, she nodded, and proffered it to me, and my Eyes shone.

Tlachtga’s Scrying Mirror [Item Class: Noble] [Item Type: Rule]

This scrying mirror was owned by a flame-haired Druid of yore, descended from an Archdruid of great power and craft. Her remnant will still lingers, leaving a Geas which will shatter the mirror and blind the eyes of anyone who uses it to see either births or deaths. If used to foresee other matters, however, the talents of the bearer will be magnified, especially if lit by the moon.

“That seems awfully hard to use safely.” Liz observed. “After all, how can one truly know what touches upon the start of and end of us? After all, aren’t they the two most powerful moments in our lives?”

“Yes. Dying is a moment which leaves a lasting impression.” Tsukiko exchanged a knowing smile with Haru. “Though to me, it was memorable for… other… reasons.” She touched her lips softly, and mom let out a giggle, a little of her usual jovial, almost too eager, nature reasserting itself. “Even so, any treasure which can help me channel my gift from Divine Tsukuyomi is welcome, even if it has to be used with great caution. Yasaka-san realised that as well. Knowledge is power, and all power comes with peril.”

“Well said.” I approved. “Anyway, looks like we’ve got someone else finishing up.” Oddly enough, it was Kikuchi Shuta-san. He was standing in a bit of a daze, holding what seemed to be a long white cloak. The ends were ragged and almost seemed transparent, and the cloak had a tear like a long rip down the centre, which made it rather useless as protection from the elements. Even so, I went over, my curiosity piqued.

Shorn Faerie Wings Woven Into Cloth [Item Class: Powerful] [Item Type: Rule]

After a great battle, several captured Faeries were tortured, their wings removed before they were bound in chains of cold iron and cast into a lake to perish. Their wings were then unravelled and woven into this cloak for the champion who defeated them. This cloak offers great protection and enhancement to Wind Elemental energies and can even allow the wearer to fly for short distances.

However, this cloak will instinctively disgust nearby Fae, and if splashed by Faerie blood, the wearer will be forced by the Geas left within the cloak by the previous owner to go berserk and fight until no Fae remain within distance of the wind.

“That’s… awful…” mom shuddered as I explained it, and I nodded.

“It certainly is. Both sides weren’t innocent, back then. Shaeula has told me of the escalating wicked pranks. Like stealing children and replacing them with Changelings, for one. But yes, the fate of those captured Fae certainly seems… unpleasant.”

“Yes, times were different. Crueller, more brutal.” Liz agreed. “What was acceptable then, is not now. But then, what was frowned upon, seen as unclean and evil then, we hardly bat an eye at nowadays. For example, homosexuality.” I blinked at that, but Liz obviously had a point. Shuta-san shifted nervously as we approached, still not used to being in the presence of such internationally renowned celebrities. “It was only truly decriminalised here and treated the same as love between a man and a woman in two thousand and three. It’s certainly something to think on…”

“Is it?” father asked, and Liz nodded.

“Oh, it certainly is. Don’t mistake me, many things are seen as wicked and immoral for good reason. But sometimes things are products of their times. Now then…” She smiled at Shuta-san. “…it seems you have a strange object there. Our ancestors, the previous Royal Families, collected many things, not all fair, many in fact quite foul.”

“That… they did, your Majesty.” Shuta-san had been learning English, of course, but even with his stats he wasn’t fully fluent. “I suppose… to fly…”

I nodded, patting him on the shoulder reassuringly, switching back to Japanese. “It makes sense to me, in a way. And it has some synergy with your beetles. The downsides are… significant… but can be mitigated. I don’t suggest trying it out during this campaign though, too many Fae around, and Shaeula won’t like it.”

“I wouldn’t dream of offending her.” Shuta-san nodded firmly. “I… just why did you ask me to come? I’m content just to oversee the area around Hisuikomushi and handle smaller matters.”

“I know, and I’m largely content to let you. But this is an opportunity to gain a little strength. You might not see the need, but remember Kondou Kazuo…”

“I see.” he agreed, his expression now solemn. “In that case, I do understand. Just, please don’t expect too much from me. I will deploy the Scarabs and do my best.” He then smiled weakly at Liz, switching back to English. “Thank you for… the gift? It is… not nice, but…”

As Henry chuckled, Liz nodded airily. “Oh, think nothing of it. Though you might want to get it tailored, it’s… rather ugly.” At her candid words, now I had to chuckle. Yes, yes it is. Huh, that gives me an idea… if it could be prevented from offending the Fae somehow, then Shuta-san really could become a useful combatant… yes, it’s something to think about…

***

After Shuta-san’s success, things had slowed down a bit, but after a while, some of the others had started finding their treasures. Yu-mi and Yukiko had both succeeded, and it had been amusing to see Yukiko apologising for having no Regalia to spare Ellie in exchange, then Ellie respond, waving her hands in denial, horrified, claiming she would never think of such, as the Regalia were sapient, and as alive as any of us.

That lightened the mood a little, when it was starting to get heavy. Anyway… Yukiko’s treasure was Cunobelinus’ Gold And Amber Choker[Item Class: Imperious] [Item Type: Artifice]

This choker of gold, calf leather from sacred bulls dedicated to the Sun of Belenus, and amber gathered and traded from immortal beings was once owned by a King of these Isles, though he ruled but a portion of the whole. The Adherence within can impart a flavour of both Healing and Lightning to a Light which is close to the Sun.

However, as the choker itself does not contain these Elemental energies, but merely flavours what simply exists, the drain on the wearer’s Elemental Light energies which mimic the Sun will be severe. In addition, the lingering will of Cunobelinus has left behind a Geas, that one must never turn the Light against dogs, lest the wearer find the choker tightening, leading to strangulation.

…and it’s quite the interesting one. A few months ago, I’d have told her to toss it. Fortunately my phobia of dogs has run its course. Also… It was a broad, masculine leather choker, but I felt it did look sexy on her, similar to the punky look I’d dressed Motoko in the other day. Ellie had joined in on the teasing too, and that had also helped improve the atmosphere with my parents. Yu-mi, of course, was an expert at reading the room, and joined in the playful banter. Her own treasure, which had delighted her, as it was perfect for her plans for Korea, was DamagedSeven-Fang Bracelet Of The Cŵn Annwn [Item Class: Legendary] [Item Type: Law]

This bracelet of white gold, studded with five remaining ivory fangs, two having been destroyed by a surge of baleful Adherence, is a treasure gathered from beyond this world, perhaps left behind by a defeated visitor, or offered as a gift for a favoured servant or King.

The fangs are designed to be removed from the bracelet, all barring the primary, largest fang, which is the eighth, and points inward, piercing the wrist, locking in place, symbolising eternity. These fangs, from the Cŵn Annwn, Deathless Hounds of Arawn, denizens of the Endless Knot, contain a small fragment of their powerful Adherence, and impart a modest portion of their ability to resist death while their fellows survive. Injuries dealt to one will be restored so long as those pierced by the other fangs have the strength to support such.

Though such a potent power does not come without price, and like all the Cŵn Annwn, a Geas is laid upon the Hounds and their Fangs, and as this is but a portion of their power, unlike the Cŵn Annwn themselves, where if one remains, all recover, here, if one pierced by the fangs perishes, so shall the bearer of the eighth fang also.

This was an incredible find, and honestly, a match for Shaeula’s Mortal Fragarach. The only slight downside was that it’d been caught in the blast when Henry and Max Power had fought, and was now damaged, two of the fangs destroyed, that fell Adherence even able to burn the potent restorative and regenerative nature of the Hounds. After a moment of observing, more words, rather cheeky ones, had scrolled across my vision.

This bracelet is a crude type of Connection, though imperfect. It is not terribly dissimilar in workings to the Pledged One Class, which you disdained. Doubtless, someone walking the Path of… Bondweaving… would see these errors and be displeased.

I get it. I do hate the dangers. But changing a Geas is beyond me. What I can do, however… I had an idea, but I’d mess with Yu-mi’s treasure later, when I was overseeing the battle.

Now, it seemed the next pair were done, and it was Miyu and Michiru. They came over with very different expressions on their faces, Miyu’s diffident, Michiru’s bold and excited. Miyu was holding a cluster of delicate, pretty bells in gold, bronze, iron, silver, brass and more, tied together by vibrant silk ribbons, while Michiru… just what the hell is that?

“Do excuse me.” Miyu greeted my parents with an extremely deep bow, before curtsying elegantly to Liz. “We have no wish to interrupt.”

“Oh, you’re not.” Liz chortled. “We are hardly unacquainted, young Miyu. Oh, how I wish I had a camera to forever immortalise Shige’s face when we talked about your relationship. He surely never expected this was how you would end up.”

“Yes.” Miyu agreed. “Though grandfather is no fool, he understood the implications of Akio’s request even then. But he surely did not expect…” She smiled at my parents then. “…do forgive my selfishness, expect me to yearn for Akio so desperately.” Her black eyes flickered over to where my sis, Suzu and Tan were still searching. “Emotions are seldom rational, although…” She astonished us by so boldly declaring her thoughts. “…I hardly think it is illogical or unwise to love Akio. Even with his divided affections.”

“That is correct, Miyu-sama!” Michiru enthused, and she would have raised her arms over her head, except she couldn’t, her arms being somewhat restrained in their freedom of movement, and her words came out rather damp and muffled. “Akio-sama is our shining light! We are moths drawn to his fierce flames! Any woman with eyes must understand what we do!”

“I wouldn’t go that far…” I was embarrassed not just by her enthusiasm, but by… Damn. I turned my gaze to Liz, expression complicated. “I think the British Monarchy has a lot to answer for.”

“I would say so. Though in our defence, I certainly don’t think this was intended for… this… sort of use.”

Indeed, Michiru’s treasure was a set of manacles, and not just those, but a heavy metallic neck collar too and indeed a type of scold’s bridle inserted into the mouth to prevent her talking easily, made from a gloomy, dull type of iron, which reeked of darkness element and adherence. It wasn’t exactly a ball-gag, but the way she wore it… yes, the vibe is terribly lewd. So terribly Michiru, I suppose. Yeah, I’m going to have to trade punches with Takashi-san until we’re both satisfied we’ve worked out our anger for each other. I’m afraid I’ve further exacerbated what he started…

Dread Restraints Of Saint Augustine’s Abbey [Item Class: Noble] [Item Type: Artifice]

These chains and cruel bindings were used to imprison one of the last spiritual beings left on the Material after the Boundary… second Boundary… was established. Forged from cold, blood-imbued iron, they were cursed by the Faerie so slain, a Geas inhabiting the blood and Adherence within.

Now instead, wearing these restraints shall enhance Might, Fortitude and Resilience, and as the wearer’s blood, sweat, tears and… other excretions… soaks the chains, this effect shall increase rapidly, though the price is pain, as sensations of physical and mental suffering are amplified, and the ghostly whispers of the slain, embittered Faerie remain within.

I didn’t read out the description, as my parents, and indeed the Mori family, were rather uncomfortable, and I couldn’t say I blamed them. I managed a lame “…at least it’ll be useful for training your Resilience and Determination…” and Liz sighed.

“All right, I do apologise. We should definitely have audited the treasures of the Tower.” She then gazed at me sympathetically. “You must have it hard. And I daresay Eleanor is disapproving. She’s actually rather puritanical in her leanings.”

“Actually, she’s been very understanding. Too much so sometimes.” I patted Michiru’s head idly, giving her up as a lost cause, when it came to being perverted. At least she’s sensible enough not to get too lewd, but then, there are men here… “Ellie needs to balance her worries about being hardheaded and not listening from before, with her right to complain and ask for changes when she’s unhappy. It’s… a very difficult balance to achieve. Just like you, Michiru. I’m almost impressed at your utter dedication to your desires.”

“I apologise for her. She is simply in high spirts.” Miyu bowed low. “And I am ashamed to show her behaviour to you, father-in-law, mother-in-law.”

“it’s… fine?” Emily managed. “She’s… quite spirited?”

“That’s one way of putting it. All right then…” I unlatched the restraints, and while Michiru did pout a little, she behaved. “…at least your treasure is relatively normal, Miyu. And quite attractive.”

“Indeed. I knew they suited me when I saw them. They are rather charming, even were they merely an accessory, I would have wanted them.” She nodded to Liz. “Again, I thank you for your generosity in allowing us to take such precious relics.”

“Honouring our agreements is important, young Miyu. Akio here knows that. But… if you two do feel a need to thank me, then look after my granddaughter, and do forgive her when she errs. She quite often speaks before she has fully understood a situation.”

“Yes. I have that problem myself. Eri too. And my sister.” I agreed, glancing at my parents, and father nodded slowly.

Miyu then offered her assent. “Yes, I am more than happy to assist her, but it is Michiru and I who are newcomers, so we are still finding our own place. Everyone is supportive, and it is quite wonderful. Yet it is far from normal. Even for us of the nobility. So… thinking about it in the manner you are accustomed to must be distressing.” Miyu suggested to my parents, but it was Hana who agreed.

“Yes. I felt… feel… awful for little Eri, but… she’s right. My little girl has grown up. She knows her own mind. It’s not for us to make her unhappy by constantly complaining. So we’ve accepted it, Junpei and me.” She smiled at Miyu and Michiru. “Look after little Eri too. She has quite the temper…” Emily winced at that. “…but she’s loyal to a fault to those she loves. And while… polygamy… is certainly strange, and was entirely unlawful, it still happened, didn’t it? No, it’s legal now. Little Aki saw to that. For little Eri, for you girls, for your granddaughter, your Majesty…”

“Yes. Concubines were a staple of the nobility, even to this day.” Miyu agreed. “Have no fear, I respect Eri greatly for the effort she has put into improving herself in many ways.”

“Yes. Little Eri won’t let anything stop her. Not now.” Hana agreed. “And just as you accepted that little Aki would have many wives, Emi, so too have we. It was seen as terrible, unethical, and now it’s not. Just like homosexuality, wouldn’t you say?” She seized on the earlier words from Liz, before Miyu and Michiru both reddened, and I changed the subject to spare their blushes.

“Now then, your treasure is interesting, Miyu…”

Samhain Eight-Colour Bells And Ribbons [Item Class: Noble] [Item Type: Rule]

These eight bells, each cast from a different metal, are married to eight ribbons, each of a different shade, representing the weakening of the Boundary between Spiritual and Material at certain specific times of the year.

Elemental energies and Adherence worked through dance and other artistic endeavours shall be strengthened, and the sounds of the bells and the fluttering image of the ribbons has an almost hypnotic effect, calming turbulent emotions and bringing peace.

However, these bells, if used on Samhain night, or in an area where the Boundary is thinner, will trigger a Geas imbued into the metals, as half are hewn from Spiritual mines, and the dancer will slip into the Astral, where, if they have not suitable talents and strength, they will wander lost, until their Silver Cord snaps, and they perish.

“Fortunately, for you the Geas is largely useless. You understand how to travel both ways. Ironically, you both have items where the Geas isn’t a great danger. You’re more fortunate than some. Although… no, never mind.” I wasn’t going to bring the conversation back to Michiru’s treasure, nor her proclivities.

“They are so cute, Miyu-chan…” As we were talking, Suzu had also finished finding her treasure, though… what the hell is that? Though at least this time, it’s not something kinky. No, Suzu wouldn’t do that, she’s an idol, who needs to remain pure and shining for her fans!

She was dragging a person-sized straw effigy behind her, though the craftsmanship was shockingly impressive. The straw was a rich, ruddy brown, and instead of an open-faced design, white wood, with red sap almost like blood around the edges where eyes, ears, nose and mouth were carved, made a face, and similar white, red-stained twine was curled around the wrists, ankles and waist.

“…I’d have liked those! The sounds they make are so charming! But then… this is good! I found her propped up in one corner, covered in ragged cloth. Such a waste. Don’t you think she’s wonderful?”

I was about to answer, when I heard a harsh hissing noise, and Tan, still empty-handed, strode over, glowering at the doll. “Where did you find that? Can you not almost taste the reek of the adherence?”

I nodded, now that I looked closely, my Eyes could indeed see that the straw was infused with a potent brew of frigid energy, yet also of the soil and stone, and damp air.

“That seems to be the Cailleach. I am not particularly versed in all the Divinities of the Endless Knot, but it is clearly an effigy invested with much of her worship. However did you come by it?” Her ruby eyes stared at Liz, who shrugged, unblinking.

“It’s very hard to say, you know. We were quite the hoarders. Plundered from all across these lands, and from Ireland, the nearby smaller isles, even some from Europe. I suppose I am glad somebody shall get some use out of it. But I’m curious. Just what will you use this for?”

As she asked that, I examined the effigy and understood just what Tan was concerned about. Another jackpot, but… this one’s definitely a double-edged sword…

Invested Corn Dollie Cailleach [Item Class: Imperious] [Item Type: Principle]

This ritual effigy, dedicated to Cailleach, the Veiled Hag of Winter, still retains a great deal of its Adherence, of frost, soil, stone, and fog. In times past, the Goddess could have possessed this Corn Dollie to function as an Avatar, yet due to decay and loss of the appropriate Connections, it is now dormant.

While it appears to be made of mere straw and wood, it is in fact strengthened by the Adherence filling it, and the careful craftsmanship, having a rudimentary artificial Chakra network.

Oh, so it does… though if anything, it’s closer to Asha’s Tree than, for example, Suzu’s… I quickly read the remaining details.

Utilising the power within is possible, but the Veiled Hag of Winter is like all Divine beings, jealous of what is hers, so repercussions are possible when she discovers such in the future.

An ominous message, but…

“I think she’ll make the core of a wonderful backup dancer. Suzumebachi needs a new member, that’ll keep things exciting!” Suzu gushed, and for a moment my head ached.

“Are you sure that’s wise?” I asked her, and she tilted her head endearingly at me, her blonde drill tails bouncing.

“If there’s a problem, you’ll handle it for me, won’t you, Akio-kun? Just like you will, Tan-chan?”

Tan and I exchanged glances, both surely thinking the same thing. She’s not wrong, but… damn, I have to admire her air-headed confidence…

“Just be respectful of it, okay? It’s a religious relic, more so than most of the treasures here.” I warned, and she giggled charmingly, showing off a perfect idol’s smile. I suppose it makes sense. A Corn Dollie is an effigy, an idol of the truest, original sense, so an idol wielding an idol… damn, she’s certainly going to have a unique stage show…

“I’ll listen to you, Akio-kun. After all… you’re my big brother now, yeah?” She smiled winningly at my parents, though I detected a trace of sorrow in her blue eyes, a slightly different shade of blue to my mom’s, or Aiko’s. Speaking of my sis, she’s been looking at something for a while now, moving away from it, before glancing back every so often.

“You know, I always wanted a brother who cares about me. My own brother thinks I’m defective, useless, not even worth the effort to find someone good to marry.” Her tone was hurt, but she was still smiling that eerie idol smile, as if talking about something happy. Her words affected mom, because she looked as if she was about to cry.

“Being a brother isn’t about blood, it’s about love.” Suzu continued. “I much prefer Akio-kun. When… when he threatened to ruin my family for me, even if it cost him a fortune, I was moved. I know the boss and Tan-chan are the same way… so…” Her words were cut off as mom pulled her into a hug. Suzu struggled a little, before giving up and just straightening her clothes as mom squeezed her, weeping.

“You’ve… had it so hard, Suzu. But you’re right, Aki won’t ever let you down. He could… never… let down… a sister… oh.”

Yes. Oh. It still doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything we do, but you do have to admit that any decision I make will be with Aiko’s best interests at heart. Even if it doesn’t seem like that.

With a slight nod to Tan, Miyu, Michiru and the others, we all left mom and Suzu to it, father staying behind, while the rest of us gave them some space. Yeah, mom’s clearly very stressed and upset, so… a good cry might do her some good, as will feeling sympathy for another young woman.

As I backed away, Suzu shot me a cheeky thumbs up, a challenge as her arm was pinned by mom, and I was once more reminded that while Suzu might have struggled to be socially normal in some ways, when it came to her understanding of difficult situations emotionally… yes, she’s very adept to hostility, anger, disgust and disapproval. It’s sad that she’s had to learn that, but…

Shaking my head, I turned away. Suzu’s right. And I take my brotherly responsibilities very seriously. And speaking of… I turned my attention to Kanami-chan, who’d just pulled a sparkling, thin-bladed sword from a pile of objects, staring at it, entranced. …I’d best see how she’s doing…

***

“It’s a great honour.” Kanami-chan gushed, holding her new sword to her chest. I’d investigated it, and it was a Faesilver Questing Blade. It wasn’t phenomenally powerful, not like some of the treasures here, but the Geas was mild, as when it was drawn, it had to be wet by either blood or mead before being sheathed, else it would reduce the Fortune of the wielder, and it had the effect of being very adaptable to aether, so with imagination and training it could become a deadly weapon in her hands.

“With this… with this, I don’t have to lose again!”

“Hey now, It’s not all about a weapon. It’s about spirit. What’s in here!” Henry thumped his chest, and I nodded.

“He’s right. Besides…” My expression was sombre. “…you don’t have to force yourself to be cheerful. I know it’s been hard for you. But… we’re all here for you. We can’t replace your family, but…”

“But shit, girl. Could be worse.” Violet was here too. She’d gained a treasure, which honestly astounded her, as she’d never thought a suitable one would be here for her. It was a long, slender dart-like weapon, the wooden shaft seeming almost organic and slimy, the blade itself long, thin and made of a dark copper, fringed with Verdigris, yet harder than steel.

It also secreted a clear, acrid liquid, which was a potent, toxic venom. It was an Afanc’s Invisible Dart, and so long as it struck a target, it would not be seen and would return to the hand of the thrower. Yet, if thrown against someone who possessed an Adder Stone, or potent Wood element, it would shatter.

“I know. I’m fine…” Kanami-chan promised, and I shook my head.

“It’s okay not to be okay. A lot’s happened in such a short time. The battle of Hanafubuki, then the discovery your parents were selling information… just, you can talk to me, to anyone, if you need to. Your classmates and fellow members of Adamant too. We might not fully understand, but…”

“I’m fine!” she insisted again stoutly. “Violet-chan…”

At that, Violet raised one dyed eyebrow, smirking.

“…isn’t wrong. I’m alive, I have friends, I have you now, Akio-kun… I’m not an only child anymore, I suppose.” For a moment her smile was quite charming, amplifying her usual more energetic nature, which was rather muted at the moment. “I… just feel so conflicted. I miss my parents, but they did betray me. All for money. And influence.”

“Yes, but… at least give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t expect you to get hurt.” I suggested, and she shook her head.

“Maybe. They probably didn’t think it was such a big deal, but my parents were educated and clever. They can’t be naïve enough to believe sharing what are effectively military secrets, when their daughter is a kind of soldier, isn’t risking my safety. Especially after Hanafubuki.”

“She’s got you there. Not every parent is a good parent. I can’t say I hate mine, they’re plenty supportive of my little bro, even though they don’t much care for me. No, that’s harsh. They just don’t know how to deal with me, a woman who doesn’t fit into the neat little box they expect. Not like they cut me off or any of that shit. But…” she glanced at Tan. “…Shiro’s parents… a mess there, yeah?”

“Yeah.” I agreed, though I was still perplexed that they’d not been in contact with her. After all, Shiro was famous. Near as famous as Shaeula, honestly, her beauty had turned heads when she’d appeared on TV.

“Then there’s Akio-oppa’s here…” Violet pounded me on the shoulder heartily. “His parents are currently very disappointed in him, don’t you think?” She then winked at Kanami-chan, who let out a dry titter.

“I don’t think it’s as bad as that. But… even I’ve worked out that your sister is… well, I thought such sisters didn’t actually exist.” She eyed Aiko, who was back at the spot she’d been standing at a number of times, ready to make a decision. It seemed that Bunta-san had finally found his treasure, and it was a curious one, definitely.

Ragged Stone Of Penance [Item Class: Powerful] [Item Type: Foundation]

This chunk of jagged black stone is stained with dried blood, and has accumulated some muddy, outside Adherence regarding tales of shadows and punishment. It contains a natural accumulation of Darkness Elemental energies, and can manipulate and control shadows, though this has little practical use. In effect, it can also be used as an artificial, external battery for such energies.

The Adherence it has attained over the years has cursed the blood, however, so if the bearer breaks any vow, especially regarding chastity, then this Geas shall activate, and the bearer’s shadow will constantly move unnervingly, giving the bearer of this stone no peace.

It’s weak, with a very odd Geas, but… in Bunta-san’s hands, it’s actually rather devastating… much like his ability. Better on the Material indeed…

“Yes, I don’t quite know what to make of your sister.” Kanami-chan continued. “But I know this. You love her very much. So I suppose I’m fortunate in some ways…” She gazed over at Suzu, who’d finally extricated herself from my mom’s hugs, but was still talking to her, waving her arms, dragging the Corn Dollie behind her. “…it’s not so bad, to be your sister.”

“Yeah, it’s not.” Violet patted her chest proudly. “I call him my oppa, because he’s got that comforting, brotherly glow about him, yeah? There isn’t much of an age gap between us, but he’s dependable, wouldn’t you say?”

“Yes. very.  Everyone looks up to him. Even…” She glanced over at Miyu, who was berating Michiru over something, the latter smiling, cheeks pink. “…even those who we saw as the peak of our society, the women we aspired to be. So…” She once more cradled her thin blade. “…I mean it. It’s a great honour, one I can boast about to Megumi-chan. She’ll be jealous. If she had a weapon like this, she could beg Motoko-sama and…”

“That won’t do.” I cut her off, and now it was Kanami-san who was blushing.

“Motoko-chan and Natsumi-chan… to teach her.” she corrected.

“I think the two of them don’t quite know how to take her. There’s… a bit more of it than I’d have expected…” I glanced over and Miyu and Michiru again, and Violet snorted.

“All girls school. Sheltered rich kids. Never meeting any decent guys. Of course they’re going to crush on their classmates. Happens in Korea too. Anyway… we can’t replace your parents, but… we can be here for you. Or rather, Akio can. And don’t worry…” her grin was suddenly mocking. “…if you develop a crush on him, I don’t think being his sister, adopted or not, is much of a bar to…”

“All right, enough of that.” At my words, Violet laughed loudly. “Not the time or the place for jokes, but…” As I was talking, simultaneously, my sis and the twins reacted.

“Shit, I can’t ignore it any longer!” my sis cried, stomping back to the spot she’d passed many times, lifting something free from the pile, while on the other side of the room, Chiaki-chan and Chiasa-chan were clutching each other’s hands, gazing down at something with amazed and unusual excitement, their eyes wide, mouths open…
