On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor
Seven Hundred And Fifteen – Contains Status – Natsumi 4, Motoko 4
“Just… what did you get up to last night?” mom asked as we met her outside our suite of rooms in the Palace. She was wearing jeans, a turtleneck jumper and a long coat, functional clothing for what was ahead of us, and she looked rather fashionable still, I felt. Despite that, she didn’t seem her usual playful self. It’s not that I don’t know why, but…
Behind me, my sis kept silent, as did Eri, though I could tell that was a strain for her. It was strange, how Eri had gone from almost pathologically quiet with anyone but Aiko and me, to incredibly outspoken. I guess we’ve all changed. Had to change…
Amen to that, as Emily might say. Eri’s thought was wry. I’m slightly offended by the way you think I can’t keep my cool now. I’m only angry with those who are worth it. Mother-in-law and father-in-law… obviously we still want them in our lives. But understanding has to go both ways…
“Emily…” Father spoke up, his tone strangely gentle. “…this is not the time…”
“Indeed it isn’t.” I agreed, my tone even. “Mom, dad…” I felt it was time to redefine my relationship with him, ironically enough, to get closer to what my sis had. “…today’s a day for learning, not arguing. But all I will say is… we just stayed up playing games and chatting. Unwinding before today.”
“I see.” Father… damn, it’s going to take a while for me to change how I think of him… gripped mom’s hand tightly, offering her reassurance. “Is that wise though? Today there is going to be a battle, yes? Should you not all be rested and thus fresh and alert?”
“A fair point, but don’t worry. I’m here to step in if necessary, and everyone has the stats to manage without sleep for a week without performance dropping. Now then…” I had the wrapped bundles of the Tsumura weapons in my hands. “…first, we have a little sparring and team building to attend to. Don’t worry…” I glanced at my parents, and also at Eri’s, who were waiting behind them, their expressions… complicated. “…this should be very educational. We all have to learn that things aren’t the way they used to be…”
***
“For us?” Motoko asked, her expression hopeful and yearning. She, and Natsumi as well, and not just her, but in a perplexing turn of events, Ohta-san and Mayumi too, were in the blue and white training hakama the two of them often wore. “Did you… succeed?”
“Of course he did, Motoko!” Natsumi giggled happily, grabbing her share of the wrapped items from me. “Was there ever any doubt?”
“I suppose not. I apologise.” Motoko politely bowed, and I ruffled her hair playfully, surprising her.
“I get it. And it’s true, I did create them quite quickly. You were likely expecting it to take a few days. But… the materials are excellent, and I’m learning with each craft. Now then…” I gestured to them both. Motoko was clutching the weapons to her chest defensively, while Natsumi was already unwrapping the largest bundle, to reveal her Hebihikoukiba Twin. The string was no longer merely the traditional hemp but was mixed with carefully spun strands of metal from the Pantheons, and it glittered under the light.
“This is…” Natsumi breathed, brown eyes sparkling as she tugged at the string. “…amazing. I can’t wait to test it out!”
“You shall get your chance…” Motoko agreed, finally springing into action too. She ran a hand through her hair, which had been pulled back into a ponytail for the upcoming sparring, straightening what I had mussed, and she unwrapped Gurenyari Twin, the long, crimson blade glittering with crystalline energies. Taking a practice thrust, she nodded approvingly.
“As always, the balance is perfect. I am still not sure how you managed that, considering that the materials involved have different weights, densities and properties.” Sweeping out the spear, then unleashing a flurry of lightning-fast thrusts at the air, far in excess of what she could have managed even a few months ago, she was well satisfied by the result.
“And Utsuroihebi has changed…” Natsumi agreed, now having revealed her sword. She spun her wrist, the blade tracing faint lines of indigo light through the air, like sparklers at night. “…it’s definitely stronger. But again, it’s comfortable, familiar. As though made for my hand…”
It was Mayumi, whose long, brownish-black hair was also in a ponytail, who spoke up smugly, much to the amusement of Hinata, who was also watching. “Well of course it does. Akio-kun made it for you, didn’t he, Natsumi? Oh, and for you as well, Motoko. As for the balance, compared to what I’ve seen that the recycling facility, that’s nothing. Magic, you know. Or rather, aether! Of course he can make it work!”
As we all held in chuckles at her prideful expression, chest puffed out, she then pouted, staring at me.
“I’m a little hurt. Where’s my gift, Akio-kun?”
As I wasn’t sure how to answer… I wasn’t as naïve as I used to be, so I certainly had an idea what she was getting at, especially with how she’d been around me recently… Hinata came to the rescue.
“Oh, out of all of us, I’d imagine you’d be the last person to get a gift, Mayumi. It’s only natural for Motoko, Natsumi, Miyu and me to get presents. Sakura is family and in Adamant too, and Honoka-chan’s under Akio’s care, and also family, now Miyu is. So you’re the odd one out. A hanger-on!”
“How rude!” Mayumi flushed, her expression defiant, but I had the feeling that she found the conflict amusing, her arguing with Hinata something she definitely cherished. “I’m important too! A trusted business partner and friend! Katana, tell them!”
Ohta-san shook her head. “I think I’ll stay out of this one, Mayumi-sama.”
“Betrayal!” Mayumi mock-howled, and there was more laughter. I let that settle, before clapping my hands.
“All right, all right. There will be gifts for all later. Are you sure you want to come, Mayumi? What would Uncle Kira say?”
“Grandfather knows I’m safe with you. Besides, I’m curious. And as your business partner, and Hinata’s best friend, I have to know what’s going on! Besides, Katana is eager to impress.” She winked at me slyly, and it was quite charming, honestly, the effort she was putting in, in her clumsy way. “I know you have more Favours, perhaps this time Katana won’t be left out.”
As Ohta-san made an apologetic face behind her, I nodded. “No decisions yet, but… I might have a better idea after our expedition. Anyway…” I turned back to Motoko and Natsumi, who were hugging their twinned weapons. “Best put them away in storage for now. If you pull those on David you’ll cut him in half and fill him full of holes…”
“That’s true.” Natsumi chuckled, face pink. “It’s not very ‘Octagon rules’ bringing a sword, is it? But I admit I’m looking forward to some sparring, and more than that…”
“Yes.” Motoko agreed. “It will be wonderful to gain a few more Levels. Yes, we have been ‘grinding hard’, as you put it, Akio, but… more is always better.”
I nodded at that. That’s true. More is always better, yet… I’d rather Motoko and Natsumi gain a few Levels than I barely gain one. My current strength doesn’t need more raw stats, no… I need to deal with my League and Vessel in other ways…

“So, why’s Her Maj here?” David, wearing a sleeveless t-shirt and boxing-style sorts, showing off his lean yet muscular arms and legs, ran a hand through his spiky brown hair, the bleached blond streaks within catching the light. Behind him were a dozen men, the Knights of my Order, who were here to receive Chirurgery, and then get a feel for things during the upcoming southern coast campaign.
To that end, we were back at a rather familiar room, where I’d had my spar with David in the past, though I did note there had been… improvements… made to it. Kana stuck up two fingers in the victory pose, preening, and beside her, Grulgor, in his dashing mortalform, nodded proudly. That would explain it then. The walls and floor have been reinforced with earth element and aether…
“And just why should we not be here, young David?” Liz asked, while Henry and Ellie made apologetic faces behind her. “We confess to being greatly curious about your skills, and the talents of these lovely young ladies.” She nodded at Motoko and Natsumi, who curtsied politely, though the effect was a little spoiled by the fact they were wearing hakama. “Besides…” She then gazed at me, her blue eyes twinkling with mirth. “…you can hardly expect us to sit out something so interesting, can you?”
“I guess not.” I chuckled. “Anyway…” I turned to the Knights. “…it’s a pleasure to meet you all. If I could have your introductions, while David and the girls are working up a sweat…” David snickered at that, but I just rolled my eyes, no innuendo intended. “…I’ll perform the Chirurgery, and we can give you a brief orientation.”
“Sounds good.” David clenched his fists. “Anyway, who’s first? You, fangirl, or you, miss samurai?”
Motoko tittered at that. “I shall allow Natsumi the honour of facing you.”
“I’m up for it! Go easy on me!” She bowed in martial arts fashion to David, who then reached out, and their fists bumped together.
“Don’t blame me if you get a black eye and some broken bones. Your boyfriend will patch you right up.” He snorted wryly. The room was far from huge, but it seemed larger, perhaps several storage rooms knocked together and fortified by Grulgor and Kana, so we had a fair few spectators. Mom, father, Junpei and Hana amongst them. Mom seemed particularly ill at ease, perhaps worried that Motoko and Natsumi would get hurt, but… That’s just another way the world has changed. Not that I want them to be injured, but… I’m proud of their drive and commitment, and… without pain, we can’t grow…
“I’d say a bruise or a scar is a badge of honour for a warrior, but… as a woman, yes, I like to remain pretty.” Natsumi agreed. “Now then… your standard rules?”
“Yeah. Knockout, submission or ring out. Look, that annoyingly handsome Troll even put down a makeshift Octagon.” The ground was still solid, but it had a softer, almost clay-like spring to it, and he’d inlaid an octagonal line of metal around, enclosing a space.
“In that case…” Natsumi clasped her fists. “…shall we begin?”
“Ladies first!” David chuckled. “I am a gentleman, after… all?” David had to throw himself to the side as Natsumi moved, blurring forward at incredible speed, the floor shaking. Mom let out a gasp, but David was grinning.
“You’re a fast one, fangirl. Come on then!” He lashed out with a kick, which Natsumi struggled to avoid. David them swung an elbow, and Natsumi had to block, knocked backwards, arms stinging.
“Got its flaws, yeah?” David’s jovial smirk lit up his face. “Too predicta…” He was sent flying backwards by Natsumi’s vicious kick. “…ble. Well damn.” David shook his numb arms, before grinning ferally. “Guess I did you a disservice. Now to get serious!”
Natsumi darted in, and indeed, her straight-line movement speed due to Chollima’s Favour was outpacing David, but as he’d shown when he took a round off me back when we first met, once he knew the moves, his fighting instincts and experience allowed him to counter despite being outclassed. Though… David’s put in a lot of work since the betrayal, and he’s been able to take advantage of many of the opportunities my Territory and allies offer. He’s holding his own…
“Good effort!” David grabbed her hakama collar and flipped her, almost like a judo throw. Natsumi landed on her feet like a cat, but barely blocked David’s follow-up kick, then a flurry of punches kept her on the back foot.
“Aki… this is…” mom began, nervous and uncomfortable, but Motoko spoke for me.
“One cannot be fit for battle without practice. And it can be gruelling. Yet…” She nodded at Kanami-chan, who was also present and watching. “…far better to be exhausted, to suffer injuries, to go beyond our limits, in training, than be forced to in battle, when our lives and that of others are on the line. You know this.”
“Emily, she is correct.” father added. “The cruelties of Hanafubuki show that.” He then gazed at me, his steely eyes a little softer than I’d seen them recently. Perhaps it was helped by the fact Eri and my sis, along with Shaeula, weren’t present, instead prepping up for the mission. “Even so, I expect you are feeling rather conflicted, Akio.”
“No kidding.” I watched as David and Natsumi exchanged a flurry of blows, David almost breaking her arm in a joint hold, before she hit him with a cross-counter, and as they separated, sweat droplets scattering from them, I once more marvelled at the inhumanly fast spectacle of combat. “I get the urge to teach David a lesson, even though Natsumi wanted the match…”
“Hey, piss off!” David laughed, breathing still even, as was Natsumi’s, despite their exertions. “I know I joked you owe me a rematch, but damn, even I don’t fancy twenty rounds, or is it more now? Seems like every morning you’ve got yourself a new girl, fuck…” He then tilted his head to dodge a charge from Natsumi, only to suddenly be thrown backwards, as Natsumi’s leg flew out at an odd angle at a truly blinding speed.
“Shit!” He dug his feet in, barely avoiding a ring out, and he coughed a little red down his chin, his ribs creaking. “The fuck? That was… ah.” David immediately used his experience to work out what Natsumi had done, barely blocking another lightning-fast punch. “Clever. That looks like it hurts though.”
“It does.” Natsumi agreed, the sheen of sweat on her face now from pain rather than exertion. Favouring one leg, she continued to attack with a barrage of punches and kicks, keeping David on the defensive, and my ears could pick up the creaking of bone and the stretching of tendons as lightning-fast movements of single limbs were mixed in. “It would be a sin as a martial artist to use such self-destructive moves in anything but life-or-death battles, but fortunately, I have Ether Healing. I’ll recover quickly enough.”
As if to prove a point, she leapt, and then changed direction, her kick smashing the ground as David leapt aside.
“Ah…” I turned to Motoko then. “Isn’t this similar to the way that the Chosen we got this Favour from could accelerate projectile weapons by only accelerating an arm?”
“Exactly. Your eyes are keen.” Motoko was impressed. “She has practised diligently to overcome the inherent flaws of the Favour. It does put a great strain on the body, however, yet… I have helped her learn a way to moderate that…” Indeed, as I watched, aether surged, and Natsumi’s speed and power increased significantly.
“Is that… Body Enhancement?” I asked, and Motoko nodded proudly.
“Indeed it is. Natsumi is a quick study, although…” David was suddenly on the defensive, gritting his teeth, before he too surged with power, his voice ringing out.
“I am he who stands to defend these isles, on this ground I shall remain undefeated. Mars Caturix!”
“…she can still not control the strength and speed fully. But in a fierce battle such as this…” Motoko carried on speaking calmly, even as David’s Battle Hymn spiked his stats to a Level that was pressing Natsumi, likely only the boost from Lovers’ Link keeping her competitive. “…insight shall be gained, and ideas which seemed impossible to grasp can be realised.”
As blow after blow were exchanged, David laughing madly, Natsumi darting about like a butterfly, yet with a wasp’s sting, the floor, even strengthened, began to creak and crack, leading to Kana rolling her eyes, exasperated. Mom was petrified by the scene, but, after waving an apology to my Knights, their introductions rather forgotten due to the spectacle, I spoke calmly to her.
“See, mom? We’re not just playing around. You should know that, after all, the estate was attacked. But you didn’t see it face to face, did you?” As she shook her head slowly, I continued. “And this is just training. That’s why… today is important. But don’t worry. Nobody will suffer any lasting injuries. I’ll see to that.”
Indeed, the battle was coming to a conclusion. Natsumi surged in, and David slid to the side. He took a heavy impact, ribs breaking, even under his Battle Hymn, but Natsumi’s arm, accelerated by her Favour, bent at a sickening angle too. Despite that, she used one leg to change her direction, a kick aimed directly for David’s vulnerable head… only for him to smirk, spit blood on the floor and pirouette. He took the blow on one shoulder, arm numbed, before using her momentum and his strength to throw her in the air. Natsumi tried to change direction again, only to meet a kick which, as she was airborne, threw her backwards, and she landed heavily, panting.
“Fuck me. I win. Ring out.” David groaned, spitting more blood. “You hit like a fucking steamroller, fangirl.” He offered her a hand, pulling her up, and the two of them limped over to us. “Ladies first, but… patch us up, Duke?”
I snorted at that, but soon my Soullight Healing had restored them to full health, Natsumi holding my arm cheerfully, David swinging his own in satisfaction. “A good fight.” I praised, and Natsumi giggled, a touch ashamed.
“I should have won, but David has more experience.”
“Shit, if I’d lost to you, fangirl, I’d feel bad. Not because you’re weak, or a woman, come on, being a man or a woman doesn’t mean shit nowadays. The difference in physical… Material, I suppose I should say… muscle mass, bone density, hormones… none of that means a damn when aether is involved. No, it’s like you’ve said, under Octagon rules, I’m the king. Though if you were wielding your weapons, I’d be resigned to defeat. After all, I’m just using a shitty mace from the Tower…”
“David…” Ellie gasped, as Liz chortled, as though greatly amused by that. “Those are priceless relics!”
“Yeah, if you say so, Princess. Compared to what our boy here’s knocking out…” He then shrugged. “Anyway, yeah, you’ve come on a lot, fangirl. Be proud. But don’t rest easy. Being the best is a long road, without an end!”
“I understand.” Natsumi bowed in Japanese martial arts fashion, as befit the Tsumura Style. “And yes, I am far from satisfied. For one, I need to learn how to truly control this Favour without hurting myself. Although…” With a smile, she produced Gurenyari Twin in a shower of purple sparks, arm flashing in a blur, and the spear pierced deep into the reinforced wall, drawing a disapproving squeak from Kana. “…yes, Tsumura Style isn’t a sport, but combat. If I could use everything at my disposal…”
“Point taken. But still, don’t think I’m easy, fangirl.” David snorted. He then glanced at his fellow Knights, who were watching on with amazement. “Oh, come on, guys. You were briefed on this shit before you were Knighted. Never seen a girl pierce through solid stone with a spear before?”
“It was indeed fascinating. Eleanor, do you do the same?” Liz asked, and as Henry chuckled, Ellie shook her head.
“I’m afraid I’m rather more there to take a beating, grandmother. I can’t say I’m enthused at that…” she then glanced at me. “…but I’m hoping that soon I’ll be able to dish out the punishment, rather than just take it.”
“You’ll get there.” I promised. “Anyway…” As Natsumi retrieved Gurenyari Twin, Grulgor fixed the walls and floor, and Motoko began her warmup, I turned to the Knights. “…yes, sorry. We got distracted. So, let me perform Chirurgery on you all quickly while you introduce yourselves.”
“It’s a pleasure.” The first Knight was more than six feet tall. He was lean yet strong-looking, and with his dark, nearly black skin and close-cropped black hair, he cut an imposing figure. “I’m Ambrose Leighton, A pleasure to meet you at last. In the Marines, I was a Colour Seargent.” He held out his hand, and I shook it. “I’m looking forward to working with you, to protect Britain and its people. Japan too, I guess.”
“I’m Ron Davidson…” the next man stepped up, and as I crammed all their names, it became apparent they were all military men, mostly from the Marines or the SAS, though one man was from the SBS, something I’d not heard of. It didn’t take me long to perform the Chirurgery, I was an expert at it now, and as I finished up, David smirked at his fellow Knights as they sweated and suffered, albeit in stoic silence.
“Don’t be a bunch of pussies. Especially not in front of the Princess and the Queen. Now then, you’ll get to take your pick from the Tower…”
“Speaking of…” I grinned. “…Ellie…”
“I know, I know. I’ll consider it my dowry, you robber baron!” she pouted, remembering by our agreement that I had plenty more girlfriends and some Vassals who were entitled to treasures from the Tower, and before we left for the south coast was an excellent time to gather them.
“We do think it rather fair, considering.” Liz had her Coronation Regalia stored in a Spatial Storage Ring now. “Besides, I daresay Akio will shower you with suitable gifts, as he has young Motoko and Natsumi, won’t you, young man?”
“Absolutely. In fact, I’ll probably be crafting while overseeing the campaign, once I’ve got a handle on what people need. Gear for my Knights too.” I smiled at the weary men who’d endured my Chirurgery.
“That’s settled then.” David nodded. “Great. Make me something decent too, boss man.” He then turned his attention back to Motoko. “All right, miss samurai. You ready to rumble?”
“Always!” Motoko bowed as Natsumi had. “Though be warned, I am not as… blessed… as Natsumi with finishing moves. No… I simply endure until victory is mine!”
“Well said. Anyone who doesn’t struggle for victory isn’t worth shit. Come on then… Octagon rules!” David was still under the influence of the Battle Hymn Of Caturix, but Motoko was undaunted, and as she moved, she was using a type of Body Enhancement, to a higher degree of potency than Natsumi had.
“Motoko’s trying to maximise the Favour. It’s one that scales up over time and as she is in a more desperate situation, but to eke out that time…” Natsumi began, as Motoko attacked. David parried her punch and slammed one back into her guard. She used Elegant Serpent Dance to mitigate most of the impact by careful footwork and her flexible body, but it clearly still hurt. Mom was wincing, face pale, but Motoko raised one hand, having noticed, and David, in an oddly gentlemanly fashion, allowed her a moment of respite to address her.
“That was a fine punch. My arms are numb. Though before, my arms would have snapped like twigs from such a strike. After all, I am quite slender.” She made an unexpected quip. “I understand it is distressing to watch, mother-in-law, but… my family has been in command of the military of Japan since the times of the Shogunate. Many sons, and not a few daughters, have led troops to battle and perished. Nowadays…” David let her continue speaking, eyeing me ruefully, and I nodded my thanks. “…war is different. A fact I rather lamented, that instead of grabbing bow, spear and sword, and facing down foes honourably, now to lead is to command from a comfortable bunker, make decisions behind a desk, to move armies from distance, never fighting ourselves.”
“I would think that’s a good thing…” mom managed, and Motoko shook her head.
“It would have been. If the world carried on as it was. Now… times have come full circle. And… I may be selfish, but… my dreams have come true. But I am not a fool. Natsumi and I nearly died. Kanami-san too, and many others who answered our call, Akio’s call. But the world will not wait for us, unlike David here…”
“…don’t worry, my Battle Hymn won’t wear off, miss samurai.”
“Quite. Anyway, mother-in-law Emily, this is the world we have. I do understand your concerns, but… am I, is Natsumi, a disappointment to you?”
“No. never! You’re wonderful daughters-in-law. My Aki’s so lucky…” she began, and Motoko’s smile was radiant.
“We are more fortunate. But see… you cannot judge by yesterday’s ideals. No more than the trials we face are what we envisaged, even mere months ago. No… our preconceptions must be shed, and our eyes opened to the truth of things. Now then…” She waved one hand. “…my apologies, David. Interrupting a duel is the epitome of bad manners.”
“No, I get it. My parents weren’t exactly thrilled when I took up a career in MMA. But when they realised I had the talent, the drive… and was the best in the world, the king of the Octagon… they realised that shit happens for a reason. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. So, ready for a good beating, miss samurai?”
“Undoubtedly. But I shall give as good as I receive. And then…” Motoko winked playfully at me. “…Akio shall comfort me, and no doubt pay you back later.”
“Shit, you’re right. But a real man isn’t afraid of retribution, nor even defeat, only of… not giving his all!” David charged them, as did Motoko, and the room shook as shockwaves from their strikes detonated.
“All men are boys, they love to show off…” Ellie grumbled, and my mom actually managed a gentle giggle at that, though her blue eyes were still troubled.
“So do girls, it seems.” mom managed, before she made up her mind. “Motoko-chan, dear, do your best!”
As the two continued to clash, in my embrace, Natsumi whispered “Where was my encouragement?” though she clearly meant it playfully.
Deciding now was a good time, as David and Motoko were drawing everyone’s attention with their fierce exchanges of punches, kicks, grapples and throws, my Eyes glowed, as I assessed Natsumi’s growth…

“You’ve worked hard…” I whispered, as Motoko reeled backwards, wrenching her arm free from David’s grip, her toes breaking as she kicked his knee hard enough to leave one leg trailing, though David fought through that with sheer willpower, his fist slamming into her cheek hard enough to fracture it, blood gushing from her nose. I winced, but Motoko was unyielding, and indeed, power was building within her, as she sought victory, and now she had seized David in a savage takedown, bending his disabled leg fiercely…
“I know.” Natsumi agreed. “The Pilgrimage, and the Rank Four expansion, offered a lot of opportunities. Of course we took them. At every chance we trained and hunted enemies. Though Motoko took a different way to me. I learned earth element, as did she, but after that… I tried to bring out my Fae nature more, Motoko wanted to push her Body Enhancement to the limits, like you did. I think she’s been quite successful…”
“No kidding!” I agreed. Daviid had kicked free of her grasp, his Battle Hymn at full force, but Motoko was undeterred, and her body was restoring itself at a visible rate. I’m not sure that’s just Ether Healing, is it? Huh…
A headbutt slammed into David, and he blinked blood out of his eyes, before grinning ferally. “You’re crazy, miss samurai. But I like it! Say what you like about our womanising bastard over there, but he’s got great taste in women. Strong women are the best!”
“I do not disagree. Though without softness, hardness is unbalanced. I can be gentle when needed!” She spat blood, and used the moment to attack, her speed and power rising even as she forced grating, broken bones back together. The Knights watched on, in stunned shock, while Mayumi astounded me by seeming unconcerned, and she’d even got a towel ready for when the spar finished. I guess she has seen worse…
Father, mom, uncle and auntie were also watching on, and their expressions were certainly showing they were getting the point, not that the job was finished. No, they need to see a real, brutal skirmish. Life or death. To see how some concerns simply don’t matter anymore…
“In fact, Akio very much likes it when I am elegant and charming. He likes traditional Japanese women!” Motoko insisted, a shoulder throw sending David to the ground, and she stomped down, only to be swept off her feet and her leg pinned, her knee the one to crack now as David flexed his muscles.
“Bitch on the battlefield, soft in the bedroom, huh?” David’s expression was mocking, and slightly wistful, I felt. “A warrior’s ideal woman. Now then, submit, or Akio will have to grow you a new… leg…?” He was momentarily confused as Motoko grinned, breaking her own leg savagely, bones ripping through flesh. She squirmed free, and then aether surged, so bright as to be visible, like an oil shimmer on water, unusual in the Material, and her leg restored itself at a rapid rate, flesh and bone regenerating, though the effort fatigued her.
“I apologise, but I am afraid that Tsumura Style shares much with serpents. Have you not heard of the snake that stole the plant of eternal youth from Gilgamesh? Or that shedding skin is akin to immortality? Or indeed…” Motoko turned, her hair whipping free from its ponytail now. “…the Hydra!” She then spun back to face David and rushed into battle again, and while his strength was static, hers was still growing.
“She’s showing off. Still, I’m happy…” Natsumi chuckled. “Now then… we all agreed that we’d not compare Lovers’ Link Ranks as a method of determining how much we each love you. But… there’s a bit of a gulf between those at eleven…”
Twelve. Eri snorted triumphantly in my thoughts.
Now, now, don’t bully her. She’s right. Love is love.
We know. Even so, it’s a point of pride for us, and a goal for them.
“I am as unyielding as a serpent, and my fangs are as sharp!” Motoko declared, slipping through David’s barrage of kicks and punches, her hands held out like fans, fingers rigid like daggers. Blood bloomed as her hands bit into his flesh, but David was undeterred.
“Don’t get cocky, miss samurai! This is Britain, and on these isles… I’m the Battle King!”
A shockwave blew out, the floor shattering, and Natsumi finished what she was saying. “…and those of us below. We know it’s not just about love. It’s not that’s simple. It’s about finding the truth within ourselves. We have to truly love ourselves too. Accept the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves and accept you for what you truly are, not the ideal you we want you to be. That’s what Eri, Shaeula, Hyacinth, Asha, and even Aiko have done…” Natsumi giggled at that.
Lin too.
“…so, I’m searching myself. I… think I understand. I know Motoko does…” As we spoke, both of them went flying out of the ring, punching and kicking each other, and as they slammed into the wall, shattering it, despite the reinforcement work done on it, Liz shouted loudly.
“We think you had best stop now. A draw, yes? Double ring out!”
“Yes.” David spat blood, groaning his agreement. “Thought I had you there, miss samurai, but you took a knee to the sternum and didn’t even flinch, just speared me clean across the ring…” He rotated one creaking shoulder gingerly. “Shit, compared to my fangirl, you fight more like a wild animal.”
“…so soon. And when we do make that breakthrough, reward us, okay?” Natsumi stole a kiss while everyone was distracted, and then stepped out of my embrace, winking towards Motoko, and I nodded, needing no further invitation to go aid the fallen warriors.
“Yes.” Motoko, her hakama dishevelled and rather bloody, stood, and with a smile, used a little water element to wash out the worst of the mess. “Sadly, Natsumi’s Favour leans towards swift elegance. Mine… to stoic brutality. But both styles have a place in battle. Oh, thank you, Akio…” I’d begun Healing her, but she pointed to David. “Him first. I can… handle this.”
As before, her aether stocks diminished, as she began to recover, almost as if she was a Troll like Grulgor. It was costly, and I knuckled her head gently, making her smile, even as I checked her status with my Eyes.

“Fine then.” I respected her valour, even if David grumbled that I should see to her first. As they both recovered, Mayumi brought over the towel, and after Motoko cleansed her sweat and blood like Natsumi had, she took the offered cloth with a warm smile.
“You know, you fought well…” I told David, and he snorted sourly.
“That sarcasm, is it? No, I guess I’ll take a draw. You’re a berserker, miss samurai, I thought you’d be more of a tactician, like my fangirl.”
“Oh, it is strategy and tactics, David… ah, thank you Mayumi. You need not have…” Motoko thanked her, handing back the towel.
“Don’t be like that, Motoko. Here, I’m not Ichijou Mayumi, but your friend and comrade!” She glanced sidelong at me, as if gauging my reaction, and I held in a smile. She then puffed out her cheeks for a moment, before carrying on as if nothing had happened.
“…as I was saying…” David’s injuries were largely Healed now, so I switched most of my focus to Motoko, helping her Skill along, also investigating it while I did so…
Tsumura Style: Hydra Vitality is a Skill based off Ether Healing, but integrated within the Tsumura Style, becoming both more potent and more focussed. Recovery of one’s own injuries increases significantly, and it also raises Fortitude and resistance to Elemental energies significantly.
While the wielder of this Skill can still Heal others, as per the base Ether Healing, growth of this Skill is biased towards self-recovery, and in addition, it can stimulate and break down muscle fibres and bones when provided with a modest draw of Aether, repairing them and leading to permanent strengthening, in a manner similar to, but far more potent than, peak level exertion and training.
Damn, that’s a good Skill, very apt for Motoko.
Tsumura Style: Serpent Strengthening is a Skill evolved from Body Reinforcement and uses Light Elemental energies to boost the nervous system to extreme performance. Flame Elemental energies are used to enhance muscle and brain functions, Wind Elemental energies to strengthen blood and respiratory performance, and Water Elemental energies to prevent fatigue, keep peak performance longer, and help with repair and recovery. Earth Elemental energies also offer general strengthening and resilience. Aether makes up for shortfalls in Elemental energies, and smooths out any errant mistakes, which can happen.
Using this Skill can cause significant discomfort, pain, stress, and lingering fatigue, but this has been largely mitigated by Tsumura Style: Hydra Vitality, a combination achieved by Fortune, hard work, and a measure of natural talent.
No wonder Motoko was able to fight David evenly, despite him being stronger, especially with Battle Hymn up. Though… David did well…
“…sadly, one’s strategy is determined by the weapons at one’s disposal. And mine is my Favour and my increasingly rapid recovery. So, as Daiyu would say, letting my opponent cut my flesh so I can break bone, is a tactical move. The strategic one… that leverages Nkunim’s drive for victory. If the situation becomes dire, my strength rises, turning danger into opportunity.”
David nodded, understanding. “Thanks.” He dusted himself off, snatching the used towel from Mayumi, who seemed perplexed for a moment. As he towelled himself off, he grimaced. “Anyway, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Me, I just wish I was a bit more like the Princess…”
“Me?” Ellie raised an eyebrow, while Liz came over to congratulate Natsumi and Motoko on their excellent performances. After a moment, mom followed too.
“Yeah, you.” David grinned boyishly. “I’d love to be able to take a beating, because I can certainly dish it out. Shit, how did you like the exhibition, boys?” He grinned at his fellow Knights. “Big strong military men like you aren’t going to let fangirl and miss samurai show you up, are you? And no excuses about magic shit. These two were just ordinary a short few months ago, and even before Akio gave them Favours, they could still cut all of you down at once…”
“We’ll do our best, sir!” Ambrose promised, saluting, before David snorted.
“Wrong salute. Try the diamond, I guess. Not just for girls, I suppose…” He imitated the Adamant salute passably, making me chuckle. You know, he’s right…
“David, I’ve an idea. I think you really should learn water element.” I suggested, and he eyed me curiously.
“Oh? Think so, huh?”
“I do. If you really want to cover your weaknesses, I think I can help. Of course…” I grinned wickedly now. “…you’ll have to give your all for me, and for Ellie…”
“Don’t I always?” He shrugged, before cricking his neck from side to side. “Well, that loosened me up, ready for a war. But there’s still time for another bout. I’d have liked to go toe-to-toe with your catgirl…” Mother-in-law Hana looked positively aghast at that suggestion, though honestly, with Eri’s Shifting Cat and Lovers’ Link… Rank twelve… Yes, Rank twelve, I get it… David would struggle, even with his experience.
“…but since she’s not here…” He glanced at Grulgor. “…how about you, big guy? Want to go for a round?”
“Grul says that would be welcome.” He flexed his muscles, a handsome smile on his face, his bald head gleaming. “Fighting strong opponents is a joy!”
“Yeah, no kidding, big guy, no kidding!” David agreed.
As Kana grimaced, placing her hands on the cracked and shattered ground, repairing it and the walls with a surge of crimson energy, I turned to my parents, who both nodded slowly. It’s a good lesson. But… not quite enough. Still… while they’ve watched training in the Boundary before, Levelled a little themselves, it was never as… visceral… as this.
“Right then. Ellie, shall we head to the Tower? We’ve got a lot of rummaging to do. Mom, dad, I think it would help if you came along too. I want you to be more involved.”
“All right, Akio.” My father agreed with me. “Emily, I think we should listen. Just as Akio will listen to us.”
“After today, yes. This isn’t a day for talk, but for observing.”
“Well then.” Ellie glanced back at Grulgor and David, the two men squaring off, grappling and punching each other, while the spectators, including the shellshocked Knights, watched on. “If you’d care to follow me. You can watch your son plunder Britain like an old Viking raid.”
I had to laugh at that. To be fair, the number of treasures our agreement requires now has ballooned way past anything I’d imagined possible. Although… I considered the False Grail beneath the Tower, and Yggdrasil’s leaf I’d been bequeathed. …compared to that treasure, everything else is secondary. But… it’s not time to ask for more. Not yet…
