On a Stormy Night, the Campus Belle Knocked on My Door Seeking Shelter
Chapter 151: A Violent House Call
Then, something occurred to Chen Mo: that phone call he’d received. He still wasn’t sure if it had been a dream or if he’d actually traveled back in time to take it.
’Should I take that call seriously?’
’If it was real, then the so-called death row inmate was unlikely to be Li Tie.’
Because Chen Mo recalled something.
Not long before traveling back in time, he had visited Su Yuqing’s home again. He was hoping her mother’s condition would miraculously improve, allowing him to get even the smallest scrap of useful information.
At that time, Li Mingyu happened to be coming home. He was helping out at his uncle’s factory.
And his uncle was Li Tie.
Li Tie’s factory was operating normally, and the man hadn’t been arrested. A death row inmate can’t be executed in just a day or two.
’This means the death row inmate mentioned in the call—the one who was about to be executed—would have been on death row for at least a year or two.’
’So Li Tie, who was going about his business just a few days ago, couldn’t possibly have become a death row inmate facing immediate execution so suddenly.’
’But then again, he had been sick and delirious when he took that call. He still didn’t know if it was a dream or reality.’
’So whether the information could be trusted was another matter entirely.’
’To truly factor this in would be getting into the realm of the supernatural.’
Although the fact that he’d been able to come back was already proof that the supernatural existed.
But he had been a detective, after all. He had to base his deductions on existing, real-world evidence.
Now, there was just one last piece missing.
As long as Blade could find surveillance footage from a nearby camera showing Li Tie in the vicinity last Friday night.
Then the guy would be confirmed as the target.
Once the person was confirmed, planning a specific response would be much simpler.
It was better than being on guard against everyone. At least if they knew the real culprit, they could take precautions in advance, even if he hadn’t made a move yet.
’Besides,’ Chen Mo thought, ’if Li Tie was only being nice to Su Yuqing with ulterior motives, a man like that certainly wouldn’t be happy about her living at his place.’
’He might even shift his target to me.’
After asking about Li Tie, Chen Mo said no more on the matter.
When Su Yuqing got home, a delicious meal was waiting for her.
After all, while Chen Mo was supposedly recuperating at home, he had nothing to do and was terribly bored, so he just went ahead and made dinner.
Looking at the exquisite four dishes and a soup on the table, Su Yuqing immediately looked at Chen Mo. "You’re sick, yet you still cooked all this? Inhaling all those fumes can’t be good for your throat."
"I’m fine. I wore a mask, and these dishes don’t create much smoke anyway," Chen Mo said with a smile.
For some reason, Su Yuqing found Chen Mo’s cooking exceptionally delicious. She usually only ate a small bowl’s worth, but tonight she couldn’t help but eat a little more.
’So much for managing my figure.’
While Chen Mo didn’t seem to care about such things, every girl wants to look her best.
Su Yuqing was no exception.
No matter how beautiful someone is, they wouldn’t object to being even more so.
After a wonderful dinner, Su Yuqing took it upon herself to wash the dishes and clean up.
Left with nothing to do, Chen Mo sat on the living room sofa, staring blankly at the TV.
That evening, Su Yuqing left for her study session, and Blade went with her.
Chen Mo was left to watch the house alone.
But soon, he received an unusual notification from his surveillance system.
It would usually send a notification whenever someone walked by, so Chen Mo was used to them.
Sometimes he would glance at the alert, but other times he couldn’t be bothered to look.
This time, he casually picked up his phone and glanced at the surveillance feed.
That single glance jolted him wide awake from the drowsiness that had been about to pull him under.
He had seen Li Tie’s figure on the surveillance feed.
’He’s actually here, near my house.’
Chen Mo was puzzled. ’What’s he doing here all of a sudden?’
’Based on the killer’s personality from the previous timeline, Li Tie couldn’t be stupid enough to show up at my door looking for trouble out of jealousy, could he?’
’If that was his personality, I wouldn’t have had so much trouble finding and catching him before.’
Just as Chen Mo was wondering, DING-DONG, the doorbell suddenly rang.
It was Li Tie at the door.
Chen Mo could see that Li Tie seemed to have something tucked into his jacket.
His guard up, he immediately went to find a pair of cut-resistant work gloves.
He kept them for doing repairs around the house, since he lived alone.
After putting on the gloves, he slowly walked to the door.
DING-DONG!
The doorbell rang again. Looking through the peephole, Chen Mo saw Li Tie standing there, his face expressionless.
Chen Mo slowly opened the door, leaving the security chain attached.
Seeing this, Li Tie immediately forced a smile.
"You are?" Chen Mo feigned ignorance.
"Oh, I’m Yuqing’s uncle. We met last night. I brought some food for her and her brother. Her brother had some at home, but I heard she’s staying with you now, so I thought I’d bring hers over."
As he spoke, Li Tie held up a bag he was carrying.
Inside was something that looked like a cake.
His other hand, however, remained tucked in his jacket.
’An ordinary high school student wouldn’t think twice and would just let him in.’
But Chen Mo had already seen right through him.
’The moment I let him in, he’ll make his move.’
Even though Chen Mo had a cold and wasn’t in peak condition, he was confident in his fighting ability.
He wasn’t particularly afraid.
His physical conditioning and the combat experience he’d honed over years as a front-line detective were more than a match for any ordinary thug.
He put on a look of pleasant surprise. "Oh, I see. But Yuqing’s already left for school. Please, come on in."
Chen Mo closed the door again, and Li Tie heard the sound of the security chain being unfastened.
He’d already known that Yuqing wouldn’t be there.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have chosen this exact time to come.
He specifically didn’t want Su Yuqing to be there.
’Plus, at this time of day, there are few people around, and it’s just gotten dark. Once I’m done, I can wipe the surveillance footage and run. It’ll be like nothing ever happened.’
As the door opened again, Chen Mo smiled, his hands hidden behind his back. "Please, come in and have a seat, Uncle. Yuqing probably won’t be back until much later."
Although Chen Mo was now 99% certain that Li Tie was a dangerous individual, he could still afford to wait and observe, just in case Li Tie truly was only there to drop off some food and didn’t pull out a weapon to attack.
That’s why Chen Mo didn’t attack the moment he opened the door.
Seeing the door open and his way clear, Li Tie smiled, nodded, and stepped slowly into the house.
The instant he casually shut the door behind him, his expression turned utterly vicious.
The instant he turned back around, he had already drawn the fruit knife hidden in his jacket. With lightning speed, he lunged, stabbing viciously at Chen Mo’s head.
