To Padi, the twelve-year custodian of the Maiqiu official granary, the mold that bloomed every flood season along the base of his walls was a personal failing. He had tried everything he knew -- sunning the grain, re-bagging the spoiled sacks, even paying out of his own ration allowance for new hemp sacks. None of it stopped the rot from returning. What he had never known, until the West Bank caravan walked into his town, was that the problem did not live in the grain. It lived under the floor.
After leaving Sinu’s house, the caravan followed the Nile for another two days. The villages they passed grew increasingly sparse. The riverbank shifted from open terrace to rolling hills, the palm forests replaced by broad sweeps of barley fields. This was Lower Egypt’s grain-storage heartland. Every township they passed, one or two low official-granary roofs emerged from the far edge of the barley fields. These granaries shared the exact same profile as the old seepage-rotted granary back on the West Bank: adobe walls, flat roof, a single door on one side, no ventilation openings at all.
On the first day entering the barley country, the scenery on both sides of the road spread out as though someone had unrolled the entire granary distribution map of Lower Egypt across the ground. Every half-shichen of walking brought another official granary’s flat roof line into recognition above the waves of barley. The grain was already in the milk stage, the stalks taller than a man’s waist. When the wind swept through, the whole field heaved like an enormous palm frond turning over: the front face was the grey-green of the barley awns, the underside the pale green of the head bases, the two colors alternating in waves that rolled all the way to the feet of the low hills on the horizon. Lu Zhu sat on the rim of a cart bed, one hand steadying his limestone-slab logbook, the other using charcoal on palm paper to roughly record the positions and spacing of the granaries along the route. He noticed a pattern: each pair of official granaries was spaced roughly one and a half shichen apart by donkey-cart travel -- nearly identical to the supply-radius interval the West Bank storage center used when moving grain between branch depots. He mentioned the observation casually to Kamon beside him. Kamon was chewing on a barley stalk, squinting at a distant granary roof, and said something that Lu Zhu noted down and carried with him for the rest of the journey: "A supply line drawn on paper is a line. Drawn under the sun, it is people pushing carts back and forth along that line until the soles of their sandals wear through."
When the caravan passed the third official granary, Mery called a halt. He jumped down from the roadbed, cut through a half-harvested barley field, and reached the granary’s west wall. He crouched and felt the wall base. The adobe color on the outer face at the base was at least two full shades darker than the middle of the wall -- from a dull yellow to a blackening ochre-brown. He used no tools, only his palm, running it upward from the wall base a cubit and a half. The moisture gradient he felt was as precise as if someone had buried a water-level gauge inside the wall. The first palm-width above the floor was cold and wet. The second was cool. By the third, it was completely dry. "Moisture-wicking height is under two cubits," he reported to Lu Zhu when he returned to the roadbed. "Lighter than the West Bank one. But the adobe at the base has already started crumbling. At this rate, three more Nile flood seasons and the load-bearing adobe around the entire wall base will have gone spongy. This granary will need major repairs." Lu Zhu recorded the assessment on his limestone slab. He did not send Mery in to act on it -- Maiqiu was still ahead, and this was not in the plan. But he noticed that on the walk back to the cart, Mery looked back at that official granary twice: once at the wall base, once to check whether it had any ventilation openings. It did not. Identical to the one on the West Bank.
On the afternoon of the fourth day, the caravan stopped to resupply at a town called Maiqiu. The town was not large. A single main street ran from the old Nile ferry crossing all the way to the grain-sunning yard at the edge of the barley fields. The street was lined with low adobe houses and a few open-fronted grain shops. The air carried the dry-sweet smell of fresh barley husks baked by the sun, mixed with the base notes of donkey dung and palm oil -- the signature scent of every town in the Lower Egyptian grain-storage belt. Lu Zhu was beginning to get used to it.
Before Meru could even go find the guild branch to make contact, the town granary keeper found them first. He was a short, stout man in his early forties named Padi, his face wearing the particular wariness of someone who had spent years being held responsible by his superiors. The corners of his mouth pulled up in a smile; his brow pressed down in worry. Both directions strained at once, giving the impression of a man simultaneously welcoming and appealing for help from every person who passed. He intercepted the caravan at the town gate, clutching a string of rusted copper granary keys, and bowed to Kamon, who stood at the front of the lead cart. His bow carried the body-memory of a low-ranking functionary: the waist bent to exactly the angle that conveyed respect, but the head dared not dip too low, because the eyes still needed peripheral vision to gauge whether the other party was showing impatience. Behind Padi stood two town bailiffs. One leaned against the wooden gate-palisade with his arms crossed, wearing an expression that said "here we go again." The other was younger, gripping a long spear whose iron-shod butt had already dug a small divot into the dirt -- he had clearly been standing with Padi at the town gate for more than half a shichen. Around the bailiffs, seven or eight townsfolk had gathered to watch: farmers with barley sheaves still on their backs, just come in from the fields; a woman who ran a small dried-fig stall at the town gate; several half-grown children draped over the palisade with their chins on their hands, eyes full of the novelty of outsiders entering town. A barefoot old farmer elbowed the man next to him: "Padi’s caught someone again. Last time he stopped a tax clerk heading upriver from Thebes to collect. The man just rode his horse straight around him. Hooves kicked up dirt all over Padi’s face."
"Good masters -- West Bank construction masters -- could you take a look at our official granary? This granary of ours -- I will not hide it from you. Every year, seepage. Every year, mold. Every year, they come down on me from above. Last year, three hundred sacks of barley rotted. The granary inspector came down personally from Thebes to investigate. He stood pointing at the mold patch in the foundation crack and scolded me for a full half-shichen, demanding to know whether this granary was still usable. We dared not say no. But ’usable’ means opening the doors every day to sun the grain, and if the sky clouded over, sunning it another three days straight. One round of sunning meant hauling those three hundred sacks back and forth. We tore more sack ties than the mold spoiled in barley."
When Padi reached the words "three hundred sacks of barley," his voice dropped suddenly. He looked down at the string of copper granary keys in his hand. Seven keys in all, each one corresponding to one of the seven lock positions on the granary doors. The oldest key -- its handle pattern worn to a featureless bright blur by twelve years of sweat from his palm. The young bailiff beside him planted his spear butt against the ground and added in a muffled voice: "After the inspector finished shouting and left last time, Padi here bought three hundred new hemp sacks out of his own pocket to replace the mold-spoiled ones. It cost him three months of his ration allowance. His wife would not speak to him for a month over it." Padi shot the young man a sharp backward glare, his face now carrying an even more complicated expression -- the discomfort of having his business exposed, layered over the relief of having it already said, so he might as well stop pretending. Among the watching farmers, someone sighed. It was a middle-aged woman with an empty carrying basket on her back. She murmured to the person beside her: "Of those three hundred sacks that rotted last year, two seasons’ worth of our family’s tax grain was in there. If Padi had not bought new sacks out of his own pocket and re-sunned it all, our household share would have been calculated at the spoilage rate. We would have owed forty percent more." The gathered townsfolk began murmuring among themselves, the topic drifting from last year’s mold to the year before, when Padi had collapsed from heatstroke sunning grain alone in the granary. Padi did not engage them. He only gripped his copper keys tighter, knuckles going white, and bowed again to Kamon and the caravan behind him -- deeper this time.
Mery stepped out from behind the carts. He handed the limestone-slab surplus-material logbook he had been updating to User and said to Padi: "Show us the granary first. After we see it, we will tell you whether it can be fixed."
Padi led Mery and Lu Zhu to the official granary on the west side of town. It was larger than the West Bank one -- roughly sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, the interior divided into three grain-storage bays. At the granary door, Padi did not unlock it immediately. He first walked a full circuit of the outer wall, his fingers tracing every vertical crack as though touching the old scars on a child he had raised. The wall bore seven settlement cracks running top to bottom, each roughly two finger-widths across, their edges rounded and softened by years of wind and rain. Padi pressed his thumb into the base of the widest crack. The pad sank in roughly half a fingernail’s depth. When he pulled the thumb out, the tip carried a small pinch of wet mud. "This crack’s position drifts eastward a little every year. Last year it moved less than half a finger. This year, nearly a full finger. Two more years and the bottom of this wall face will have completely separated from the floor slab."
Mery stood behind Padi, watching him press the wall cracks. He said nothing. He was waiting for Padi to unlock the door. The moment Padi swung the door open, a gust of mold odor, mixed with damp earth and aged barley husk, poured from the doorway. Mery did not frown. He crouched down and pressed his palm against the interior floor to read the temperature and moisture. The floor was cool but not damp. The problem was not in the center. It was at the wall base. From his tool bag he pulled his palm-fiber measuring cord and measured the relative height difference between the interior wall base and the exterior ground.
Mery did not measure just one point. He began at the four corners of the interior, measuring two directions from each corner -- one cubit east-west along the wall base, one cubit north-south -- then added a floor-level reference point at the exact center of each grain-storage bay. With eight sets of data collected, he drew a scaled-down interior topographical map of the granary on his limestone slab, marking the elevation difference number at each survey point in its corresponding position. Lu Zhu stood behind him, following the sequence of Mery’s marks. Northwest corner first, clockwise around the perimeter, back to the center point. The sequence was identical to the one Lu Zhu had first taught Mery on the day he showed him how to use the palm-fiber cord to measure floor settlement at the West Bank official granary. The difference was, this time Mery had added an annotation beneath each survey point: distance of survey point from wall base. The wall base sat at the highest groundwater level. The farther toward the center of the granary interior, the drier the floor became. Which meant mold did not start from the center. It spread inward along the wall base in a band. Mery drew an arc along the wall base with his finger. The floor color inside that arc was half a shade lighter than the color outside it. This was the boundary line of mold’s advance from the wall base toward the interior over the past several years. Inside the line: old mold-scarred ground. Outside: the dry zone not yet touched. "The height difference between your granary foundation and that barley field outside is only four and a half finger-widths. When the field is irrigated, water soaks directly into the wall base. There is no crushed-stone moisture-break layer under the wall, is there?"
"No. When they built this granary, they took shortcuts. Below the foundation there is only one course of tamped dry earth."
"Dry earth is not a moisture break. Dry earth absorbs water. Every year when the Nile floods, the soil layer under the foundation drinks itself full, then slowly wicks that water back up into the wall base. Once it reaches the interior floor, the grain absorbs moisture and molds."
After saying this, Mery crouched back down and pressed his palm against the dampest section of the interior wall base. His palm-print left a shallow indentation in the adobe surface. A dark ring of water stain bloomed rapidly around it. He stared at that ring of water stain for a short moment, then stood and walked around to the outside of the granary, pressing the corresponding position on the exterior wall base. The exterior humidity was lower than the interior, but the exterior wall face bore horizontal cracks. The crack orientation ran from the wall corner horizontally toward the middle of the wall. The fracture-face flatness varied from crack to crack, each one curling slightly upward at both ends. Mery drew a vertical reference line beside an exterior crack in charcoal, then stepped back three paces to observe the whole. Both east and west walls carried three horizontal cracks each. Every crack started at a wall corner and ended roughly six cubits from that corner -- precisely aligned with the inward reach of the interior mold arc. "The crack orientation tells me something else." Mery pointed to the longest horizontal crack on the exterior wall. "The crack originates at the wall corner and propagates outward. Both ends curl upward. That means the wall body is being pushed upward from below by water vapor. It is not compression from above. If roof leakage were causing structural settlement, the cracks would run top-to-bottom, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Yours are wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. The force is traveling upward from the ground. So this is not a roof problem. It is not a wall-body problem. It is: the foundation has no moisture barrier."
Padi crouched at the wall corner and squinted at the crack for a long moment. Then he suddenly slapped his own thigh. "Every year I tell the inspector it is not the roof. He never believes me. He says if the roof is good, rainwater cannot get in, so there should be no mold. Everything I have told him over the years is not worth the weight of this single line you just drew." Mery made no response to the praise. He had already moved with his palm-fiber cord to another section of the granary’s south wall base. There, a patch of the wall surface was bulging severely, the adobe face swelling outward by nearly half a palm’s thickness. A tap with his finger produced a hollow echo -- voids left inside the adobe after its internal fiber structure had been decomposed by water vapor. Mery stood and pushed against the interior east wall with his palm. The wall deflection was not severe. But the ring of adobe nearest the floor surface was visibly discolored and bulging. "Your granary’s problem is not structural. It is ventilation and foundation. Insufficient ventilation traps hot, damp air. No moisture-break layer under the foundation allows groundwater to wick back up. Fix two things and mold will drop sharply. First: cut a small window in both the east and west walls. Not large. Only two rows of narrow windows in the wall section near the roof, one row facing east, one row facing west. Window width must not exceed three finger-widths. Fit movable palm-leaf grilles -- prop them open during the day, close them at dusk. Rely on differential wind pressure to exchange air naturally, driving hot, humid air out through the east window. Padi listened intently. He crouched beside Mery, drawing the drainage-channel position Mery had described in the dirt with his finger, asking as he drew: "What size crushed stone? The gravel on our riverbank is mostly large pieces -- breaking it down small costs labor. And opening these two windows -- will the higher-ups say they violate official granary specifications?"
"Crushed stone does not need to be very small. Fist-sized and under will work. The channel opening must be at least two cubits wide. Fill with crushed stone to grade level with the ground. Channel bottom at least six finger-widths lower than the interior floor." Mery put away his palm-fiber cord and turned to look at Lu Zhu. This was his habit now. After every independent survey, he delivered a complete verbal review to Lu Zhu -- not handing in homework, but confirming that every data point he had measured would pass his master’s scrutiny.
Lu Zhu had been standing behind him the entire time without interjecting a single word. It was not that he was uninterested. Every dimension mark Mery drew, Lu Zhu’s eyes tracked the pen tip. From the earliest days, when this apprentice had sorted crushed-stone surplus material in a corner of the West Bank refugee camp, Lu Zhu had seen the exact same marking habit: the charcoal would first drag a tiny burr to the left, then sweep right in a straight line. The burr direction on the paper matched the settlement bias of the graded particles -- a tic that only developed in someone who spent every day working with crushed-stone ledgers, reading which direction stratified material naturally settled. What Lu Zhu was looking at now was no longer a burr. It was a complete ventilation-retrofit cross-section of an official granary, produced entirely independently. The skinny boy who had washed up on the West Bank because his family’s grain fields were annexed -- that boy was now crouched on the floor of a stranger’s town granary, using a palm-fiber measuring cord and a charcoal stick to draw everything this building lacked.
When Mery had finished sketching the full retrofit cross-section on the ground, all dimensions and materials labeled, he stood, slapped the mud off his knees, and said to Padi: "That wooden tenon on the door you opened -- has it ever been removed?"
"Never. It has been stuck in the door groove the whole time."
"Tomorrow, take the tenon out. Use a chisel to drop the bottom of the door gap by one finger-joint into a recessed groove. That way, even in the rainy season when the outside drainage channel is not yet fully functional, water standing on the ground cannot travel directly back into the granary along the bottom door gap. This groove is a final safety belt above the drainage channel. It is no substitute for the moisture-break layer. But at least it will save you from carrying another three hundred sacks of moldy barley and taking the blame for it."
Padi took those words in. In front of Mery, he unfastened the string of rusted copper granary keys from his waist and removed the oldest key -- the one he had received on his first day in the post, the one that opened the innermost interior bay door, the one he normally never used. "I have carried this key for twelve years. Take it. You are the first person who has ever explained to me clearly how the backflow water under that door panel works. The key stays with you. Every year before the rainy season, I will inspect according to your diagram. If I find a problem, I can still find you. More useful than weighing on my hip." He pressed the key into Mery’s hand and gripped his palm once, firmly.
Mery took the key and tied it onto his palm-fiber measuring cord -- on the same knot bundle that held the West Bank guild’s backup-water-source marker tag. He did not feel it as an honor. His instinct was simply that a copper key already guarded for twelve years deserved to be wrapped in dry palm fiber to prevent rust.
The retrofit work began that afternoon. Kamon split four experienced hands from the stone-mason crew to help Padi cut the east and west narrow windows. Before chiseling, Kamon had User draw two precise window-position marker lines on the interior wall face with a palm-fiber cord. The upper line marked the window top, the lower line the window bottom. The distance between them: exactly three finger-widths. Padi stayed beside him the whole time he was drawing, hunched close to watch User’s technique. It was not the kind where you scribbled wildly with charcoal and then erased and corrected. First, use the palm-fiber cord to measure the three-finger interval on the wall face, dotting a light charcoal mark at each end of the interval. Then use those two dots as anchor points, stretch the cord taut, and snap it to leave a perfectly straight ink line. "How does that cord snap such a straight line?" Padi crouched beside User and asked. User showed him the cord’s cross-section. The core was three-strand twisted palm fiber, soaked in a thin lime-water slurry and dried hard. Once taut, it was a natural ink-line tool. "Before every snap, replenish a thin layer of charcoal powder on the cord. Too thick and the line bleeds. Too thin and nothing snaps out. When applying the powder, use the pad of your thumb. The thumb-pad curve controls the powder thickness exactly."
Padi pulled a small hemp twine from inside his tunic -- the kind he used for sewing grain sacks -- dabbed it with charcoal powder, and tried. The snapped line came out crooked, the charcoal too heavy, the ink mark a smeared blob. User looked at it but did not laugh at him. He simply handed the palm-fiber cord over and let Padi try again with User’s own cord. This time Padi was much more careful. He used his thumb pad to spread the charcoal powder back and forth twice across the cord surface, pulled it taut, took a deep breath, and released his fingertip. A line -- heaven knew how much straighter than before -- snapped onto the adobe wall face. Padi stared at that ink mark for a beat, then placed it side by side with the reference line User had snapped. His line was nearly twice as wide. But it was a straight line. "From now on, when I sun the grain, I can use this snapping method to align every row of sacks." His voice carried a small pride he had never possessed in twelve years as granary keeper. "The inspector can come look. He will find nothing to pick at. The sacks will be straighter than any straightedge."
The windows were cut at roughly one-third of the wall height down from the roof -- not an arbitrary position. Mery had worked it out using his palm-fiber cord, measuring upward from the average stacking height of the grain sacks inside the granary. Hot air rose and accumulated at roughly two and a half to three and a half cubits above the floor. The bottom edge of the narrow windows sat exactly aligned with this hot-air accumulation zone. Cutting them proved more labor-intensive than expected. The adobe walls were nearly a cubit thick and had to be chiseled through from both inside and outside simultaneously. Four stone masons worked in two paired teams striking from opposite faces, each blow carefully angled to avoid fracturing the already fragile old adobe around them. Halfway through, Kamon suddenly called a halt. At one-third of the chisel depth, his hand had found a palm-timber cross-brace embedded inside the wall -- a tie-beam installed during the original construction. The wood was half-rotted, one side already showing mold. Kamon did not route around it. He had the masons adjust their chisel angle to cut an extra hand-width gap hugging the outer face of the old timber, turning the beam into a natural support point for the window frame. "The old material from the original build -- do not pull it out. It has been braced inside this wall so many years it has grown into it. Pull it out and you open an even larger hole. Convert it to a window-frame support. The old timber can serve another ten years." This detail was recorded by Padi in charcoal on the last blank page of his own tattered account book. The handwriting was far cruder than Mery’s or User’s. But every stroke carried the resolve of an old granary keeper who refused to be held responsible again.
The drainage channel excavation proceeded simultaneously. Papi led two young stone masons in digging a circuit of crushed-stone drainage channel around the exterior wall base. The stone particle size was rough-sieved using a coarse screen -- all the fist-and-under cobbles sorted from the Baihedu riverbank, free-draining and uncloggable. During the dig, Papi measured the channel-bottom elevation difference with his palm-fiber cord at intervals along the channel. The bottom could not be perfectly level. It needed a very slight gradient -- roughly half a finger-joint’s fall -- in the direction away from the granary, giving the infiltrating water a direction to flow. One of the two young stone masons was Kuru, the youngest mason in the Baihedu crew, just turned seventeen. He was quick-handed but short on experience. At the east wall corner, he accidentally dug the channel nearly two finger-widths too deep, exceeding Mery’s specified upper limit of "channel bottom at least six finger-widths below interior floor." Papi crouched on the channel edge and looked at it. He did not scold him. From the crushed-stone pile beside him he picked out a few of the flattest slab stones and laid them on the channel bottom in two horizontal courses, bringing the over-deep section back to the standard height. "If you dig too deep, do not fill it back with earth. Earth will wash away. Fill it with stone. Stone’s function is to pass water, but use the stone courses to control the height."
Kuru crouched on the channel edge and drew Papi’s depth-correction method on the back of a crushed-stone fragment. He used the technique User had taught him: "dot the two endpoints first, then snap the line between them." Though the stone surface was rough and uneven, the positions of the two endpoints and the direction of the leveling correction were clear at a glance. User laid two sample slabs on the channel bottom. On each slab he scratched four longitudinal lines with his fingernail -- his personal habit: one nail line for every three finger-widths of crushed-stone cover, four lines total from channel bottom to surface. At the next station, he would record the drainage times of these samples on his limestone slab for comparison. Standing at the channel’s edge and looking at the circle of crushed-stone drainage channel already taking shape, Padi suddenly thought of a question. He asked Mery: "Will the crushed-stone layer in the drainage channel be clogged by rainy-season silt? The mud slurry from our barley fields is very fine. When it rains, it pours straight into the low ground."
Mery did not answer directly. He picked up a handful of crushed palm leaves from the surplus-material pile on the ground, pressed them into the junction where the drainage channel’s outermost crushed stone met the surrounding earth, and tamped them firm with his foot. The palm-leaf fibers formed a natural filter layer separating the crushed stone from the outside mud. "Crushed palm leaves as filter layer. Mud cannot enter. Water passes through. Replace the leaves every half-year, same as you sun the grain. Record it in the ledger." Padi wrote this down in his account book as well.
When work ended at dusk, Padi went into the granary alone and stood inside for roughly the duration of half an incense stick. He said that before, the moment you shut the granary door, the mold stench was suffocating. Now, the wind through the east window poured in, and standing under the west window he could feel a thread of cool air moving across his scalp. He opened his mouth and drew a breath of the granary’s interior air. His tongue did not come away sticky. "Before, opening this granary was like lifting a soaking-wet reed mat that had been stewing half the day. Now, this breath at least has the normal smell of a barley storehouse." He crouched under the west window and let the wind blow over him for a good while. Then he abruptly stood, walked out the granary door, and circled around to the exterior wall base to look at that ring of crushed-stone drainage channel. The stone masons who had dug it had already packed up their tools. The crushed stone in the channel bottom glowed with a dry grey-white sheen in the slanting evening sun. Padi bent down, picked up the scattered bits of crushed stone that had spilled along the channel edge, and placed them back into the channel. The motion of his picking them up was identical to the way he counted the grain sacks inside the granary every morning.
At dawn the next day, Padi had the bailiffs carry out ten sacks of barley from the granary that had already absorbed moisture but not yet molded. He spread them across the front courtyard to sun. He crouched at the edge of the sunning yard with his tattered granary account book and noted behind every sack the drying date, moisture level, and estimated return-to-storage time. This method came from Tia’s hourly-work ledger and Shafi’s medicinal-material zone chart: every entry, every retrieval, every post-sunning return to storage -- all to be recorded as a chronological table.
"From now on, sunning is recorded by date in separate columns. Cannot go back to the old way where you finish sunning, dump it back on the pile, and next rainy season the same batch is the first to mold again."
When the caravan departed, it was a clear, cloudless dawn. The sun over the barley fields to the east had just risen into a full half-circle, the dew on the barley-awn tips not yet burned off. From a distance, every ear of barley was haloed in a translucent silver rim. Padi stood on the field ridge at the far edge of the barley. He was not alone. Behind him stood the two bailiffs who only yesterday had been leaning against the palisade watching the spectacle. The young one -- the one who had exposed Padi for buying hemp sacks out of his own pocket -- now had a bundle of freshly cut spare palm-leaf filter material on his shoulder, the backup Padi had told him to prepare for replacing the drainage-channel filter leaves in half a year. Of the seven or eight townsfolk who had gathered to watch yesterday, three farmers with barley sheaves on their backs had come pushing two handcarts on their own initiative. The carts were loaded with riverbank crushed stone they had sieved themselves at their own sunning yards, following Mery’s method. They said they would help Padi finish paving the short unfinished section at the outer mouth of the drainage channel. The middle-aged woman with the empty carrying basket was there too. She pressed a packet of dried barley cakes into the hands of User on the caravan’s last cart. She said nothing, only gestured with her hand for him to eat them on the road. And the barefoot old farmer -- the one who had joked about Padi getting a face full of dirt from the tax clerk’s horse -- was now crouched at the granary’s east wall base, using the snapping-line method Padi had just learned to help the bailiffs mark supplemental grain-sack alignment baselines. His own household’s grain sacks would also be stored in this granary. He was snapping the first straight line of his life.
Padi shook no one’s hand in farewell. He simply drew a simple diagram of the new moisture-barrier drainage-channel test-excavation cross-section beneath his twelve-year-old copper granary key, and pinned it to an iron nail on the inner face of the Maiqiu official granary door. Walking to the last cart in the caravan, he placed a packet of dried barley cakes and two sacks of barley -- stored a full season using the crushed-stone moisture-barrier method -- onto the cart bed. After setting them down, he patted the rim of the cart bed and said something very quietly to the small cloud of dust rising behind the cart tail. Hapy, standing nearest, heard him. What he said was: "Last night I chiseled out that recessed groove under the door gap. I was alone in the granary when I chiseled it. My hands were shaking a little. I was afraid of chiseling wrong. But after I finished, I shut the door and opened it again. No light leaked through the bottom anymore." He was not waiting for Mery to confirm it. He just wanted to tell someone.
The caravan exited through the east gate of Maiqiu and moved east along a dirt road that decades of donkey carts had ground through the middle of the barley fields. On both sides stretched endless barley, the grain waves pushed by the dawn breeze layer upon layer in the direction of the caravan’s advance, as though the entire earth were tilting eastward. After the last cart in the column rounded the final turn at the far edge of the barley fields, Padi was still standing on the field ridge. His figure had shrunk to a small dark point at the edge of the grain, but the outline of that point still showed the motion of one hand: he unfastened the string of copper granary keys from his waist and felt for the oldest one. That one was no longer there. It was on Mery’s palm-fiber measuring cord. But his hand still went through the habitual motion of straightening the six that remained, then fastening them back at his hip. When he returned to the granary door, he saw those same townsfolk who had watched yesterday now spontaneously spreading crushed stone on the sunning yard to extend the drainage channel. No one had organized them. They had just passed by, seen work to be done, and crouched down. Padi stood at the granary door and watched them lay stone for a long while. Then he pushed open the two narrow windows above the door panels. The dawn breeze through the east window swept across the back of his neck. He stood beside his tattered account book, now filled with new methods, opened his mouth, and breathed in granary air that carried no mold. His account book was open to its first page -- the very first entry he had recorded on his first day in this post, twelve years ago. The ink had faded to grey-brown. In the lower right corner of that page, he added a new line: "Twelfth year, early summer. West Bank construction crew passed through and retrofitted the granary. Granary windows opened. Drainage channel completed. Door bottom no longer leaks light."
Mery reached the end of the field ridge and turned back to look at the official granary, now washed dark ochre by the rising sun. It was the same old adobe-walled official granary. But the walls now carried the shadows of two narrow windows. Around the exterior wall base lay a ring of crushed-stone drainage channel, and beneath the west window a cool breeze flowed without pause. He felt no pride. He only suddenly realized: the hundreds of transit official granaries of similar scale along the entire West Bank corridor had never once, all at the same time, opened a ventilation flow-line through all four of their walls. On his own palm paper he drew a retrofit comparison chart covering every granary from the West Bank’s new granary to Maiqiu. Wall height, original mold-period duration, current ventilation-opening count, and drainage-channel depth for each granary -- all entered into vertical columns. The last row remained blank, reserved for the next unknown granary type waiting at the next station.
The caravan had been traveling east for about the time it takes to burn one incense stick when Mery suddenly pulled out the retrofit comparison chart from his cart and drew a new cross-section on its reverse. Not the cross-section of a single granary. It was two parallel official-granary exterior-wall planes, connected by a cross-ventilation flow-line diagram. Between the two walls he drew three air-flow arcs running east to west, each arc annotated with estimated airspeed and air-exchange time. This was no longer the retrofit of a single granary. This was the new problem that emerged when four already-retrofitted granaries were placed side by side: when every official granary along the route had east and west narrow windows opened, would their ventilation patterns produce different results depending on spacing, orientation, and terrain differences? Below the flow-line diagram he wrote a single sentence: "Single-granary window retrofit solves ventilation. Do multiple granaries along the route produce a mutual correction pattern? Not verified." Then he returned the charcoal stick to the knot on his palm-fiber measuring cord and kept walking east. The cart wheels rolled over dried barley husks on the dirt road through the fields, producing a fine, continuous rustling, blended with the soft clatter of the limestone slab against the cart bed. These were the only sounds the caravan made after leaving Maiqiu.
At this station he heard no one praise him. But the moment Padi pinned that diagram to the inside face of the door panel, he could not have known that Mery would file it together with the next station’s retrofit cross-section from another official granary, in the same row of palm-paper diagram catalogues. Every sheet was a row of data. First row: West Bank official granary. Second row: Baihedu, the Sinu house moisture-barrier crushed-stone layer. Third row: Maiqiu, narrow windows. He was taking buildings that did not know of one another’s existence and linking them, one by one, into a complete column of mutually correctable empirical records.
