The old farmer Sinu had no one left to repair his walls. His son had been conscripted to Thebes to haul stone for the temple and never returned. For seven years Sinu had done the only thing he could: each flood season, when the river receded, he slapped a fresh layer of river mud onto the water-rotted base of his house. Seven layers now marked the wall, each one a flood line -- and the eighth was about to collapse into the damp earth beneath it.
After leaving Baihedu, the caravan followed the Nile’s east bank for another three days. These three days brought no water blockades -- not because the temple had relented, but because Meru’s guild private-well station map was running ahead of the caravan. At every stop, the branch guild men had the backup wells’ water bags filled and ready, temperature and mineral concentration noted. Seb’s defensive lookout positions, set along the camp perimeter, fell into formation with the cart column each dusk. He and Hapy had by now condensed the "night-camp weakest-point assessment" into a standardized checklist, and at each station they simply worked through it.
On the first day after leaving Baihedu, the caravan entered a palm forest that stretched nearly ten li along the riverbank. The east-bank palms were choked with wild vines that spiraled from root to crown, erupting in clusters of tiny purple flowers at every frond-stem junction. Sunlight falling through the palm fronds scattered the ground with irregular patches of fractured gold. Seb walked on the left flank of the column, his eyes never leaving the forest edge. A rutted branch road, carved by ox carts, led deep into the grove toward a small village of mud-brick houses. The houses there used palm trunks as structural frames, the gaps between them filled with unfired adobe bricks, the outer walls plastered with a mud slurry mixed with chopped palm fiber. Seb noted the construction method on his palm paper, adding a small annotation in the margin: "Palm-trunk shrinkage rate differs from adobe -- joints will inevitably crack. Needs woven palm-leaf mesh on the interior face as a flexible transition layer."
Kes walked up beside him and glanced at the paper. He offered no comment on Seb’s annotation. Instead he raised a hand and pointed at an abandoned granary in the village, half its roof collapsed. "Look at that one. The roof rafters are palm-frond stalks laid directly onto the adobe wall -- no load-bearing beam as transition. Palm-frond stalks are curved in cross-section. The palm-leaf thatch on top bears unevenly. One strong wind and half the roof goes. We never had this problem with tent roofs in Nubia -- we never laid flat matting directly on curved rafters. We laid a cross-branch load-bearing mesh first."
"Why do the people in this village not use a load-bearing mesh?" Seb asked.
"Because this palm forest has no shortage of palm leaves. Roof damaged -- go pick a few fresh ones and patch it. In places where materials are too easy to get, construction methods never evolve refinement." Kes kicked a fallen section of dried palm-frond stalk on the road surface with his toe. "Same as the quarries back on the West Bank. Stone everywhere, you just pick it up. So they never orient the stone when they lay it. Speed is all that matters."
By noon the next day, the palm forest fell away, and before them spread a sweep of barley fields unfolding along a river bend. The fields were terraced -- stepping up layer by layer from the low riverbank toward the inland plateau, each level separated by roughly two cubits of height, the field ridges built of dry-laid river cobbles. The barley was in its milk-ripening stage. When the river wind swept through, the whole expanse heaved in wave after wave of silver-green. The channel here made two consecutive turns. The first bent eastward, drawing the current against a low limestone escarpment. The second, at the foot of the escarpment, folded back northwest into a near-semicircular backwater bay.
Seb stopped at the river bend. He had noticed a pattern in the village layouts on both banks of the turn: every house facing the backwater bay had its wall foundation at least a palm-and-a-half higher than houses facing away from the bay. Houses facing the straight-on rush of the main channel all had an extra outer wall of wave-break crushed stone. "Kes, look. The wall-foundation heights in these three villages -- they decrease from the concave bank to the convex bank in proportion to the current velocity. The houses on the concave bank where the current hits hardest -- they have timber piles buried under their foundations."
Kes crouched by the roadside and used a dead branch to draw a top-down view of the channel in the dirt, marking three different foundation-height symbols at the concave bank, the straight section, and the convex bank. "The villages near the Fourth Cataract back home do the same thing. But there it is stone walls. Here, adobe walls after soaking are even more vulnerable to uneven settlement than stone. Look at the house closest to the river. The foundation is raised, but the soil under the foundation has already softened from seepage. Raising the foundation only pushes the problem up one level. It does not solve the subsoil." From the concave bank on his channel drawing he extended a dashed line downward, through the riverbank silt layer all the way to the sand-and-gravel layer at the riverbed bottom. "If it were me -- I would not start the foundation from the silt. I would dig down to the sand-gravel layer first, then tamp a crushed-cobble bedding course on top of that, and only then build the wall foundation upward."
Seb stared at the dashed line Kes had drawn for a long time. He remembered the first lesson Lu Zhu had taught him on the West Bank: a foundation does not begin from the ground surface. It begins from the first stable load-bearing stratum beneath the ground. Kes had never attended Lu Zhu’s lessons. But he had derived the exact same conclusion on his own, from the stone walls of his Nubian homeland. "That dashed line you drew -- it runs the same direction as the foundation bearing-stratum depth line my master taught me on the riverbank. Only difference: you drew yours on a channel map. I draw mine on a geological cross-section."
"For us, the channel is the cross-section. The Nile cataracts back home -- the seasonal water-level swing is far larger than here. In the dry season, the sand-gravel layer beneath the riverbed lies exposed. You do not need to dig to see it." The two sat for a quarter-hour on the stone field-ridge beside the barley, each adding a few strokes of observation to his palm paper. Seb compiled the foundation heights of the three riverbank villages into a set of cross-section comparison data organized by decreasing current velocity. Kes annotated each channel bend on his map with the estimated depth of the aquifer beneath the foundations.
On the afternoon of the third day, the river wind blew hard, thrashing the palm groves and driving the Nile’s surface chop up onto the flats. The caravan pushed along the heavy-cart access road newly cut beside the bank. Hapy and User were at the very front, pushing the stone-laden carts. Seb stopped suddenly. He raised his hand and pointed to a row of houses at the next river bend ahead. The walls were adobe brick and mud mortar. The outer face had never been plastered. Rainwater, leaking through the palm-frond roof seams, had soaked the wall bases to a knee-high wet stain. This was not a fresh wound. Every year, when the flood rose halfway, the base of these walls soaked once. Year after year after year, until the adobe in the lower half of the wall had rotted so spongy that a fingertip could scoop out a handful of wet mud.
"This wall -- the load-bearing section is still sound, deflection is still within safe limits. But one more flood season and the wall base will collapse." He crouched at the base of the wall and pressed a finger into the waterlogged adobe. His fingertip sank in about one finger-joint deep.
The house belonged to an old couple. The man, Sinu, had spent most of his life farming barley and onions on the mud flats along the Nile. The woman, Mut, crouched by the cook-stove boiling barley porridge. The stove was built of river mud and was already split by three cracks. Their son had been conscripted the year before to haul stone for the temple transport teams at Thebes and had never returned. The two elders had no money to buy stone for foundation repairs and no labor power to tamp a new base. Every year, all they could do was wait for the flood to recede and then smear another layer of river mud over the wall base. One layer smeared on. The next year, one layer soaked away. And smeared again. The mud layers on that wall, counted upward from the base, numbered seven -- seven strata of dried river-mud cracks from different years, one pressed against the next. Every stratum was a flood line.
Lu Zhu crouched for a long time in front of Sinu’s wall base. He was not looking at the wall. He was looking at the ground. The ground outside the wall foundation was cracked, the fissures running from the wall base all the way into the courtyard. The deepest crack could swallow an entire thumb. The cause was not construction quality. The foundation had never been tamped. Beneath it lay a soft layer of river-flat silt. He turned to Seb and Kes. "Take your own look first. What is the most lethal problem in this wall?"
Seb was already measuring the wall. He pulled his palm-fiber cord from the top to the base, checked the deflection angle, and sketched a wall cross-section on his palm paper with charcoal. "Uneven foundation settlement. The side near the river is lower -- water seeps in that direction, and the silt layer under the foundation compresses unevenly year by year. The soil base on the inland side has not yet been saturated. But long-term, if the natural foundation is not raised, the entire wall corner will lean."
Kes laid his palm against the damp soil at the wall base and felt the temperature. The mud by the river was at least three finger-joints’ temperature difference colder than the earth up on the terrace. That meant seepage beneath this household had already formed a stable subterranean moisture band. "If we reinforce the foundation first -- we need to channel the standing water away first, lay a crushed-stone infiltration trench on the river side. Then tamp a crushed-stone bedding course outside the wall base, using nearby riverbank stone broken down and laid in. Finally, re-tamp the foundation and raise the floor height -- at least five finger-widths higher than the current courtyard level."
"Raising the floor -- these two elders cannot finish that work on their own. People past sixty cannot tamp crushed-stone mortar." Lu Zhu stood and knocked the sand from his knees. "Here is the plan. The guild provides craftsmen. The trade alliance provides crushed-stone material. You two provide a pair of willing hands. Seb and Kes are responsible for the design improvement plan. Kamon’s craftsman team handles construction. Today we dig the most critical part -- the crushed-stone infiltration trench outside the wall base. The following two days we complete the foundation reinforcement. No charge."
Sinu stood beside the wall base and listened to Lu Zhu’s words. He did not say thank you. He simply turned, walked to the side of the cook-stove, and retrieved the old flat spade he had used his whole life. The shaft was wrapped at the grip with old palm-fiber cord -- his son’s cord. After his son left, Sinu had unwound it from wherever the boy had tied it and wound it onto the spade shaft. Three turns around the handle, every knot still holding the imprint of his son’s grip strength from that year. He stood there gripping that spade and nodded once at Lu Zhu.
The old woman Mut came out from behind the stove, wiped the years-old wear-grooves on her old pine tabletop with the hem of her skirt -- the spot where her son had sat for his last meal before leaving home -- then carried two old clay jars from the corner and set up a makeshift rest table in the middle of the courtyard using a tree fork and a worn plank.
People had already begun gathering in the courtyard without anyone noticing when. The first to come was the old tailor Tut from next door. He carried a low stool he had woven himself from palm-frond stalks, set it down in the eastern corner of Sinu’s courtyard, and sat without a word, watching the craftsmen dig the trench. He sat for a quarter-hour, then stood and went back inside his own house. When he emerged again he was carrying a bundle of palm-frond stalks he had been saving for half a year -- every stalk uniform in thickness, each one personally selected from the palm forest and dried three months. He laid the bundle beside the tamping crew’s surplus material pile. "These stalks are old enough, dried through. Wedged into wall-foundation joints, they last longer than fresh stalks. Old stalks do not shrink."
Then came the children from the east end of the village -- three boys and a girl in goat-horn braids. First they only leaned over Sinu’s courtyard wall to peer inside, then the smallest boy was caught by the chalk line Seb had drawn on the ground marking the infiltration trench. He bent over and followed that line from the wall base all the way out past the courtyard to the edge of the reed thicket, then ran back and tugged Seb’s sleeve. "Are you drawing a road for the water?" Seb crouched down and used two pieces of crushed cobble to build a small slope on the ground. He poured a handful of water at the top. The water threaded itself through the stone gaps all the way to the bottom. "See? Water finds the low ground by itself. We are just paving it a road where it will not slip." The boy stared for a long time, then dragged his older sister over and poured his own handful of water the same way, carefully repeating Seb’s words: "Water finds the low ground by itself." After hearing this, his sister ran to her mother and came back with a small bag of dried date pits. She crouched beside Seb and laid the pits one by one along the chalk line of the infiltration trench, pressing them into the trench edge to form a curving "date-pit road marker."
After noon, the blacksmith Hek from the west end of the village arrived with his twelve-year-old son. He circled Sinu’s wall foundation three full times, then crouched at the junction of the infiltration trench and the wall base, parted the crushed-stone layer, and looked at the bedding structure beneath. "Under this crushed-stone bedding course -- if you add a layer of old copper-sheet scrap, the water that seeps down will carry less mud away. The copper rust will seal the finest gaps on its own. Not relying on it to block water. Relying on it to bind mud." He finished and left, then came back carrying a small hemp sack of copper slag and copper-sheet offcuts he had swept from his anvil for years, spilling them clattering beside the crushed-stone surplus pile. "This copper scrap, I was going to melt it down and re-forge. But this trench of yours -- it needs these more than my anvil does."
After Hek left, the old farmer Nebyef from the north of the village walked over leading his seven-year-old grandson by the hand. He crouched at the outer edge of the tamping zone, scooped up a handful of crushed-stone dust, and rubbed it in his palm. "This dust. Before you mix it with water, you need to sieve the dry dust first. The river wind carries salt when it blows north. Salt settles on the dust surface and forms a crust you cannot see. If you do not sieve that crust away and mix it straight in, the water resistance of the dried mortar drops by two-tenths." His grandson had already run over and crouched beside the chalk line Seb had drawn for the infiltration trench, tracing it with his finger from beginning to end. He looked up and asked his grandfather: "Is this line the water’s road?" Nebyef did not answer. He picked a palm leaf off the ground, folded it into a shallow V-shaped channel, and set it at the starting point of the infiltration trench’s chalk line. From a clay jar he poured a thin stream of water into it. The water slid through the leaf channel all the way to the trench’s end. The grandson stared at the water trace for a long time. Then he peeled the sheath off the dead twig in his hand and placed it solemnly at a bend in the trench line. "This is where the water turns. I am putting a road marker here."
The blacksmith Hek’s son had been crouching beside the crushed-stone surplus pile the whole time without leaving, watching how Hapy used charcoal to record the particle size of every crushed-stone layer on palm paper. After a quarter-hour of watching, he pulled a sharpened charcoal stub from the small leather pouch at his waist -- it was the old marking charcoal his father used for scribing cut-lines on iron blanks -- and, imitating Hapy, spread a small palm leaf across his lap. He sorted the surplus pile before him into three grades -- large, medium, small -- and drew a simplified stone-grain diagram beside each grade. Hapy glanced over. The grain-size proportions in the simplified drawings were off, but the boundaries of the three grade tiers aligned exactly with the dividing points on Hapy’s own formal record sheet. "Your grade boundaries are right. But you drew the stone grains too large. You made the medium crushed stone the size of load-bearing stone. Next time, use your pinky nail as reference. Medium crushed stone should not exceed your nail cap." The boy looked down at his own nail cap, then erased all three stone-grain drawings and redrew them, smaller by a full size grade, measuring against his pinky nail.
The noon sun grew steadily more brutal. Without anyone noticing when, the neighboring housewives had set up a large temporary clay pot for boiling water outside Sinu’s courtyard wall. The pot belonged to the widow Taha, who had dismantled it from her own stove. She balanced it on two river cobbles and untied a small pouch sewn from old linen from her waist. From it she pinched a few dried mint leaves and scattered them into the water. Beside her, another housewife named Meket -- the mother of the girl with goat-horn braids -- brought out her household’s only tin ladle and handed it to every craftsman who stepped off the tamping zone. The little girl followed behind her mother, carrying a shallow chipped clay bowl half-filled with cooled mint water in both hands. She walked slowly, eyes fixed on the water’s surface every step of the way, terrified of sloshing. When she carried the bowl to Seb, the surface sat exactly flush with the rim, not a drop spilled. "When you were drawing lines, you did not drink water. My mother says you must be thirsty." Seb took the bowl and looked at the chipped edge. The curve of that chip had the same arc, leaning left, as the diversion curve he had drawn at the infiltration trench’s turning point. He drank the bowl dry, handed it back to the girl, and added a line of small script to the lower right corner of his palm-paper diagram: "Turning diversion arc -- same orientation as chipped bowl rim."
Kamon’s construction crew began tamping the foundation when the sun was directly overhead. The tamping was not done in a single pass. First, a crushed-cobble base layer was spread and tamped three rounds with wooden mallets, each round followed by an extremely thin wash of lime-water. Then a middle course, a blend of river sand and coarse crushed stone, was spread and tamped five rounds, the surface checked with a palm-flat hand after each round. The sequence repeated six full cycles. Kamon himself stood beside the tamped layer. After each round he drove a sharpened palm-wood pick into the side of the layer, then pulled it out to check whether the pick tip carried damp mud. Damp mud meant the layer beneath was still loose -- another round needed. He punched nearly thirty holes, one after another, and finally, with the sun already leaning west, pulled out a pick that was completely dry -- only fine dust of crushed-stone powder clung to the tip, no mud. He stood and drove that pick into the top corner of the tamped layer as a completion stake.
On the inland side, Seb and Kes discovered an ant nest while digging the infiltration trench inside the wall foundation. The nest’s tunnels extended downward nearly a cubit and a half from the surface, aimed directly at the base of the wall’s humus layer. Kes stared at the ant nest for a moment, then called Lu Zhu over. He had seen ant nests like this in Nubia, but he was not certain whether the orientation would be the same here. Lu Zhu crouched and probed a thin palm stick into the nest entrance, pushing until the tip touched a layer of wet sand at least two finger-joints colder than the surrounding soil temperature. He pulled the stick out and marked the depth with a charcoal line on the shaft. "Your Nubian experience just proved itself. The position of this ant colony tells us there is a stable seepage line about two cubits underground -- the same depth as the subterranean moisture band we mapped on the riverbank." Kes stood beside him and nodded. Not because he had been afraid to judge, but because he had learned to let the master look first when he was not certain.
Just as the work was nearing its end, Mut’s neighbor Taha pulled the palm-frond mat she had woven through the entire dry season off her own roof and spread it over Sinu’s newly tamped foundation. The mat, laid out, was exactly three cubits longer than the raised surface of the completed foundation. She announced that the mat was not a gift to Sinu’s household -- it was a loan -- but after saying this she pressed all four corners down with crushed cobbles, then ran her palm over the mat surface three times, front to back and left to right. Then she stood and walked back to her own house.
Mut took the last pot of barley porridge off the cook-stove. The porridge was for everyone who had come to help. She carried the pot to the center of the courtyard and ladled it bowl by bowl into the assorted clay bowls she had borrowed from the village: Hek the blacksmith’s thick-walled bowl, old tailor Tut’s bowl wrapped in blue cloth edging, the little girl’s shallow chipped bowl, and her own son’s old bowl with a crack running across the bottom. The bowls lined the makeshift rest table in a row. The setting sun sliced in at an angle under the edge of the palm-frond shade canopy, catching the steam rising from each bowl and spinning it into fine, pale-gold threads.
Lu Zhu walked to the inland side of the wall foundation and crouched to examine the low-lying patch Kes had pointed out earlier. It was not simple water flow at work. The humus layer beneath the surface collapsed on contact with water. He stood and called Seb and Kes over, then scratched a layered cross-section into the dirt. "The inner side of this wall’s foundation cannot use tamped earth. Lay a connected bed of crushed-brick fill at the base of the humus layer. Let water drain through the voids in the fill so it does not pool at the bottom of the adobe. Above the crushed-brick bed, add an extremely thin lime-crushed-stone screening course -- not too thick, or water will not percolate through. Both sides get a coarse palm-frond mesh filter layer, three-finger gaps, with coarse fiber torn from the outer layer of palm stalks threaded crosswise. You two each take one section. Seb draws the infiltration trench gradient line. Kes controls the bedding course and screening-course thickness. Hapy manages the crushed-stone particle grading. If there is anything you are unsure of, ask me first."
The three each crouched to their tasks. Seb pulled his measuring cord. Kes measured the lime-crushed-stone layer thickness with his palm. Hapy re-sieved the crushed stone to the particle grade Lu Zhu had specified. The division of labor on this composite drainage-layer solution was explicitly split three ways. Not one of them was doing anything beyond their capability.
As construction wrapped up at dusk, Seb converted Sinu’s original drainage line -- which had run straight from under the wall foundation to the riverbank -- into two sections. One section, outside the wall base, was a buried infiltration channel of crushed stone. The other section extended from the collection end of the infiltration trench as a low drainage spur, threading through the roots of the date palms and finally seeping out naturally through the reed roots at the riverbank. Lu Zhu walked over and glanced at the trench alignment, then drew a dashed line on Seb’s diagram tracing the true lowest point of the terrain. Seb’s slope direction was correct, but the low-point position was off by half a cubit from his own estimate. Lu Zhu measured it with a palm rule and corrected it. "Half a cubit off, and the water will take a detour. Correct it, and drainage time improves by one incense stick." Seb erased the old line and re-traced it along Lu Zhu’s dashed correction.
Sinu stood beside the wall foundation, his hand resting on the freshly tamped crushed-stone bedding course. He did not raise his head. In a low voice he said: "My father had his own brothers tamp this wall fifty years ago. Today is the first time anyone has helped us build the foundation solid."
The old woman Mut brought out two sacks of barley from behind the cook-stove -- barley she had stored through a full rainy season using the crushed-stone moisture-barrier method. She emptied both sets of spare moisture-barrier crushed-stone bags into the tamping crew’s surplus crushed-stone basket and said, in her own local speech: "Before, I stored grain by the feel of my hand. You store it by rules. Rules are steadier than hands."
That evening, the caravan camped outside the village. The villagers, on their own initiative, used crushed stone sorted from the riverbank to pave a temporary access path from the village center to the camp. Sinu himself was the first to unload his door plank and push a cartload of crushed stone to pave the first section. When he finished, he patted the stone surface with his flat spade. The sound of the spade back striking crushed stone was exactly the same as the sound he made every morning patting the mud ridges of his fields flat. Then a few of the farmers who had learned stone sorting that morning followed behind and extended the access path to the village gate.
After finishing work at Sinu’s house, Seb crouched alone at the base of the riverbank’s steep slope. By the light of the campfire reflecting off the water, he used his palm rule to measure repeatedly, cross-checking the actual water discharge point at the trench mouth against the theoretical drainage low-point marked at the bottom edge of his diagram. The half-cubit deviation Lu Zhu had corrected at dusk had been fixed. The water at the discharge mouth flowed smoothly into the reed roots -- no pooling, no scouring, velocity steady and even.
At dawn the next morning, the caravan prepared to break camp. Seb went to Sinu’s gate before the sky had fully lightened, but when he arrived Sinu was already crouched beside the trench mouth. The old man had used the old flat spade wrapped in his son’s palm-fiber cord to clean away the fine layer of sand that had settled in the trench mouth overnight. The sound of the spade tip touching crushed stone was very soft.
"When my father was alive, he said the walls a man builds in his lifetime -- that is the work of his own years." Sinu did not look at Seb. His eyes were fixed on the water flowing from the trench mouth. That current, seeping out from under the wall foundation, was so clear you could see the bottom, catching the morning light in a very faint silver sheen. "I spent most of my life leveling field ridges. Those I leveled flat. But walls -- walls, other people helped us build. Not temple men. Not corvee officials. People who did not know us."
Seb crouched beside Sinu and took a square of folded palm paper from inside his tunic. On that sheet, the infiltration trench cross-section diagram now carried two additional flow-velocity curves for the trench mouth -- one for the dry season, one for the flood season. But these two curves were not Seb’s own calculations. The night before, Lu Zhu had used a palm rule on the riverbank slope to measure the relation between water level and slope direction, then added the reference lines in dashed strokes on the diagram. Seb had traced over them and added his own annotations. "This is for you. When the flood season brings high water, the fine gravel on the surface layer of the trench mouth will wash away. Look at this dashed line on the diagram. Every time the water recedes, just fill the groove at the trench mouth with a handful of fresh crushed cobble. Crushed cobble is everywhere on the village riverbank. No need to buy it."
Sinu took the sheet and looked at it for a long time. He could not read. But the dashed line Lu Zhu had drawn used a grey paler than charcoal, and the solid line Seb had traced was black. The two lines stood independently on the paper, letting him see which parts were original and which were added. He pressed his finger on the reed thicket at the end of the dashed line. "After the water leaves here -- does it reach the Nile?"
"It does. It passes through the reed roots, seeps down another half cubit, and reaches the riverbed sand layer. The water seeping from your wall foundation eventually joins the deep undercurrent of the river channel."
Sinu folded the diagram back along its original crease, wrapped it in a scrap of cloth torn from his own old garment, and placed it into the old clay jar beside the cook-stove. Before today, that jar had held only the worn halter rope his son had left behind when he departed, the small braid of colored palm leaf his wife had woven when she was young, and the tiny riverbank cobble his father had pressed into his palm before he died. Now it also held a palm-paper sheet marked with crushed-stone dust lines and water-flow arrows.
By the time the caravan pulled out, the sun had just fully risen. Sinu stood beneath the old wind-twisted date palm at the village gate, one hand gripping his old flat spade, the other pressed against the trunk. As the last cart in the column passed the village gate, he tapped the spade tip against the stone road surface three times -- not heavy, not light. This was the only gesture of praise he possessed, beyond "the harvest turned out well," in a lifetime of farming: spade tip tapping earth three times, meaning this ground can hold seed.
The old woman Mut was not standing at the village gate. She stood in her own courtyard, a pot of barley porridge still warming on the cook-stove. Beside her was the grain-storage area Nefer had helped her reorganize the day before. This morning, on the shelf’s lowest tier -- the one reserved for "the serving left for the one who is gone" -- she had laid down fresh dried palm leaves, and on them placed a bowl. Inside the bowl were the dried-date and crushed-walnut sweet cakes her son had loved before he left home.
The caravan followed the riverbank access road eastward. About two li out from the village, Seb discovered a small, tightly folded slip of paper tucked into the side of his palm-paper diagram roll. He opened it. It was a record of the uses for those copper slag scraps from Hek the blacksmith. But the handwriting was not Hek’s. The old tailor Tut had written it for him, using fabric-dye water: "Copper slag enters earth, meets damp, forms green rust. Green rust does not dissolve in water. It can seal cracks. Dig it up in three years. The crushed-stone gaps at the trench mouth and the green-rust seams will be equally hard." Seb tucked this slip into the first volume of palm-paper diagrams he had carried from the West Bank. In that volume were the first-lesson foundation cross-section Lu Zhu had taught him, the old fisherman’s white-sand arc record, and now one more entry: the green-rust seam-sealing principle of copper slag.
Passing the village gate, Kes turned for one last look back. What he saw, at the end of that crushed-stone access path outside Sinu’s courtyard wall, were a few new stone seating platforms. They had been built in the dark hours before dawn by neighbors who could not sleep, coming back with leftover crushed cobbles to pile simple foot-rest platforms. The stones were stacked irregularly, but every cobble’s orientation was buried in the same direction -- the weathered face toward the riverbank, the sharp edge down, gripping the crushed-stone ground. This dry-laid cobble-drainage-barrier method -- no one had ever taught it to anyone. Yet before dawn today, it had already leaped off the diagram and grown itself at the end of the crushed-stone access path.
