Chapter 38: Chapter 38 - Pretty useless

Ying Di sat stiffly in the driver’s seat, both hands resting on the steering wheel as he stared at the empty passenger seat beside him. His eyes slowly wandered around the car, searching for his master. When he finally found Jua Gu, he blinked blankly before turning his head toward the back seat, where Jua was sitting comfortably with Ying Mao.

Jua Gu had just finished helping Ying Mao fasten his seatbelt. Once he was sure the boy was secure, he reached over and gently ruffled his soft hair.

"Jua-ge, you can’t keep doing that." Ying Mao puffed out his cheeks and tried to flatten his hair with both hands. "I might not grow up if you keep touching my head."

"But your hair is so soft and cute..." Jua Gu mumbled, completely ignoring his complaint as he reached over and messed it up again.

Ying Mao’s cheeks puffed out even more. He tried to look annoyed, but the little smile tugging at the corner of his lips ruined the act.

Jua Gu chuckled before finally sitting back and fastening his own seatbelt. When he looked toward the front, he noticed Ying Di was still staring at him.

"What are you waiting for? Drive."

Ying Di blinked. He looked at the steering wheel blankly. "Master..." he mumbled something softly that Jua couldn’t catch.

Jua Gu raised an eyebrow. "why are you mumbling?"

The corpse puppet gazed bac with his eyes innocently scrunched up. "I can’t drive."

Jua Gu froze. For several seconds, he simply stared at the man. "...What?"

Ying Di innocently blinked at him. "I cannot drive, Master."

Jua Gu’s eyebrow twitched.

"You have a driver’s license. Before you died as in... you did right?"

Ying Di nodded obediently.

"And yet you can’t drive?"

Ying Di nodded again, looking as though he couldn’t understand why his master seemed so upset. "The original owner of the body did not know how to drive. But he has license." He pulled out the wallet from somewhere and handed the license to him,

Jua Gu stared at him in disbelief. ’that fucking ying di, he doesn’t know how to drive but he got licence by paying someone off. what is the use even... that vain man...’ his eyes twitched wildly. "What exactly can you do?"

Ying Di straightened slightly in his seat. His expression remained blank, but there was a strange hint of pride in his eyes as he answered,

"I can serve Master well."

Jua Gu’s lips twitched. "Well, your service has been very flawed so far," he said through gritted teeth.

Ying Di tilted his head slightly, seemingly confused by the criticism.

Jua Gu almost wanted to laugh from frustration.

This was supposed to be a corpse puppet!

A powerful necromancer like him had gone through all that trouble to raise the corpse, only to end up with a giant, muscular puppet that couldn’t dress himself, couldn’t button his own clothes, and apparently couldn’t even drive despite having a license!

Jua Gu rubbed his aching forehead.

"Go call a driver!"

Ying Di immediately nodded.

"Yes, Master."

He opened the car door and climbed out without the slightest hesitation. A moment later, he obediently dashed off to find someone who could actually drive.

Jua Gu watched his retreating figure with a deeply tired expression.

Who knew managing a dumb corpse puppet would be this stressful?

If this were anyone else, Jua Gu would have already dissolved the puppet contract and turned the corpse back into an ordinary corpse. Unfortunately, they needed Ying Di for now. At least until they dealt with all the dangers surrounding Ying Mao, having a controllable Ying Di around would make things much easier.

Still, that didn’t make dealing with him any less frustrating.

Jua Gu let out a long sigh before turning his attention to Ying Mao.

The boy was already looking up at him with a bright smile, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Jua-ge, you don’t like Brother Di?"

Jua Gu glanced toward the direction Ying Di had disappeared before looking back at the little boy.

"Hmm... he is very dumb. Not like you at all. Ying Mao is the smartest."

Ying Mao’s eyes immediately lit up.

He sat up straighter, his little chest puffing out proudly.

"Yes! I’m very smart!" he declared, nodding seriously. "After I grow up, I will learn how to drive, and I’ll drive you everywhere. Don’t worry, Brother. You won’t need Di-ge anymore. I’ll do everything for you."

Jua Gu couldn’t help chuckling at the serious expression on his little face.

"Yes, yes. You can do everything for me."

Ying Mao nodded firmly, apparently taking the promise very seriously.

Soon, Ying Di’s useless puppet self had managed to bring someone over to drive the car, and before long, they were cruising down the road toward the school.

They quickly dropped Ying Mao off at the school gates. The boy was clearly reluctant to leave, dragging his feet as he walked away and looking back at Jua every few steps. When he finally reached the gates, he gave Jua one last pout before reluctantly walking inside.

Jua couldn’t help smiling as he watched the little figure disappear into the school.

Once Ying Mao was out of sight, Jua leaned back comfortably in his seat.

"Drive us to the nearby cemetery," he ordered the driver.

There was no response.

Jua waited for a moment before slowly turning his head.

The driver was staring straight ahead, looking completely confused.

Jua rolled his eyes and reached over to nudge Ying Di, who was sitting quietly in the passenger seat.

"Tell him."

Ying Di immediately turned toward the driver.

"Yes. Drive us to the nearby cemetery."

The driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror. His expression was slightly stiff, but after a moment, he nodded.

"Yes, Master."

Jua rolled his eyes again.

Right.

His position in this family was very low.

After all, he was only a servant’s son who had been raised alongside the young masters and treated as their playmate. In this family, who would really respect someone like him?

That was also precisely why he needed Ying Di.

Ying Di’s position, his identity, and most importantly, his power and complete obedience could solve a lot of problems for him. As long as he had this idiot puppet under his control, he didn’t need to worry too much about people questioning his orders.

And if anyone ever became suspicious, he could simply come up with an excuse.

He could just say Ying Di was smitten with him and was willing to do anything to please his beloved.

Jua Gu’s lips slowly curled into a wide, satisfied smirk as he gazed out the window.

It was actually a pretty good excuse.

If only he had known earlier that life would become this much easier with a corpse puppet around, he would have turned Ying Di into one a long time ago.

Perhaps then he wouldn’t have had to deal with half the trouble this family had thrown at him.

Jua Gu leaned back in his seat, looking rather pleased with himself.

Yes.

Having a puppet was wonderful.

Having a ridiculously obedient, ridiculously useless puppet was another matter entirely.
