Necromancer: Kingdom Building with My Legion of Undead Knights
Chapter 273: The Great Hall Gathering
The idea would have been laughable, absurd, the kind of thing that only a madman would believe. But look at the castle now.
The small castle was now picturesque!
The exterior had been completely transformed. The walls, which had once been cracked and stained, were now smooth and clean.
Fresh mortar filled the gaps between the stones, giving the structure a solid, unified appearance. The windows, which had once been dark and empty, were now framed with new stonework, their sills clean and straight.
The roof, which had once been sagging and leaky, was now covered in new tiles, their colors warm and inviting.
The design under the windows, the decorative stonework that had once been worn and faded, had been restored to its former glory.
Intricate carvings adorned the spaces beneath the sills, depicting scenes of knights and battles, of victories and triumphs. The stone was a warm grey, its surface smooth and polished, catching the light in a way that made the castle seem almost alive.
The entrance, which had once been a simple wooden door, was now a grand archway, its stone frame carved with intricate patterns.
The door itself was new, its surface painted a deep blue, its iron hinges polished to a shine. Above the door, a new crest had been carved into the stone: the symbol of Percvale, a reminder of the barony’s heritage and its future.
This was now truly a noble’s castle! It was a place that commanded respect, a place that announced to the world that Percvale was no longer a dying barony. It was a place of power, of strength, of hope. It was a castle that could stand proudly alongside any other in the region.
—----- —----
Now it was evening. The castle was quiet, the workers heading back to their tents. Their footsteps echoed through the halls, their voices low and tired. They had worked hard, had pushed themselves to their limits, and now they were ready to rest. But before they did, there was one more thing to do.
Darion had arranged a small gathering in the great hall. It was not a grand feast or a lavish celebration, but a simple gathering of the people who had made this transformation possible.
Ghan and his crew were invited, along with the knights, the archers, Seren, and Garren. The great hall, once crumbling and cold, was now warm and well-lit.
Fresh plaster covered the old cracks, its surface smooth and clean. The floors were level, their stones polished to a shine. A fire crackled in the hearth, its warmth spreading through the room, chasing away the chill of the evening.
The hall was filled with the sounds of conversation and laughter. Ghan and his crew sat at one of the long tables, their faces relaxed, their voices carrying stories of other projects they had worked on.
One of the workers, a man with a thick beard and a booming laugh, told a tale about a bridge he had helped build in a neighboring kingdom.
"It was supposed to be a simple crossing," he said, his voice filled with amusement. "But the river had other ideas. We had to rebuild the foundation three times before it held. Three times! By the end, we were ready to give up. But we didn’t. We kept at it, and in the end, we built a bridge that still stands today."
Another worker, a younger man with a quick smile, shared a story about a tower he had helped repair.
"The owner wanted it to be taller," he said, shaking his head. "He kept telling us to add more levels, even though the foundation couldn’t support it. We told him it would collapse, but he wouldn’t listen. So we built it anyway. And you know what happened? It collapsed. Right in the middle of a feast. The owner was so embarrassed he refused to pay us. But we got the last laugh. The whole kingdom heard about it, and no one would work for him again."
The knights and archers sat at another table, their voices low and easy. This was no time for fighting or a war but instead to share a meal and a laugh. It was a moment of levity, a reminder of the bonds that had been forged through hardship and triumph.
Darion sat at the head of the table, his eyes scanning the room. The fire crackled in the hearth, its light casting warm shadows across the walls.
The room was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation, the clinking of glasses, the scraping of chairs. It was a scene that had once seemed impossible, a moment that he had dreamed of but never truly believed would come.
He reflected on how far Percvale had come. The castle was becoming a home, not just a ruin. The people were becoming a community, not just a collection of survivors.
The barony was becoming a place of hope, not just a place of despair. It had been a long journey, a difficult journey, but it had been worth it.
Ghan took a moment to thank Darion for the work. He stood, raising his glass, his voice carrying across the hall.
"To the Baron," he said, his voice filled with sincerity. "He did a very good job in rebuilding Percvale. When I first came here, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had heard stories about this place, and none of them were good. But I saw the potential. I saw the vision. And I’m glad I took the job. This castle is a testament to what can be achieved when someone is willing to work for it."
The hall erupted in cheers. Darion smiled, raising his own glass in acknowledgment. "Thank you," he said. "But I couldn’t have done it without all of you. This was a team effort, and I’m grateful to everyone who contributed."
He reached into his pouch and pulled out the remaining balance, plus the extra 150 gold for the wall. He handed it to Ghan, his grip firm. "Here," he said. "The final payment. You earned it."
Ghan took the gold, his expression grateful. "Thank you, m’lord. It’s been an honor working with you."
The gathering continued, the laughter and conversation filling the hall. It was one of the real celebrations since Darion had taken over Percvale. It was a moment of joy, of connection, of hope.
