Necromancer: Kingdom Building with My Legion of Undead Knights
Chapter 272: The Final Days of Construction
The construction was nearing completion. The workers were finishing the last sections, their tools still echoing through the halls, their voices still calling out to each other.
But there was a different energy in the air now, a sense of finality that had not been present before. The project that had consumed so much time and effort was finally coming to an end.
The walls were solid, their surfaces smooth and clean. The cracks that had once marred their surfaces had been filled, the weakened sections reinforced.
The roofs were sealed, their tiles new and sturdy, their beams strong and straight. The floors were even, their surfaces level and stable. The castle that had once been a crumbling ruin was now a fortress, a home, a symbol of Percvale’s recovery.
Darion walked through the halls, his footsteps echoing on the newly laid stone. The workers nodded to him as he passed, their faces weary but satisfied.
They had worked hard, had pushed themselves to their limits, and now they were seeing the results of their labor. The castle was transformed, and they had played a part in that transformation. They had played a huge part.
He did a final walkthrough with Ghan, the mason walking beside him, his hands clasped behind his back.
They moved through each room, checking every corner, every surface. Ghan pointed out where the work had been hardest, where the walls had been most damaged, where the repairs had required the most effort. He spoke with pride, his voice carrying a note of satisfaction.
"This wall was the worst as you saw," he said, gesturing toward a section that had been completely rebuilt. "The mortar had crumbled away, and the stones were loose. We had to take it down and rebuild it from the ground up. But now it’s solid. It’ll last for another hundred years."
Darion nodded, running his hand along the surface of the wall. The stone was cool and smooth, the mortar firm and even. It was a vast improvement from what had been there before.
"And the hidden room," Ghan said, a hint of amusement in his voice. "That was unexpected. I’ve worked on many projects, but I’ve never found a secret room before. It’s like something out of a story."
Darion smiled. "It was a surprise to me too. I’m still not sure what to make of it."
Ghan shrugged. "Whatever it is, it’s yours now. And it’s well hidden. No one will find it unless they know it’s there."
They continued the walkthrough, moving through the great hall, the kitchens, the corridors. The castle felt different now, more alive, more welcoming.
The drafty corridors were gone, replaced by warm, dry spaces. The damp corners had been sealed, the crumbling walls repaired. It was a place that felt like a home, not a ruin.
When they finished the walkthrough, Ghan turned to Darion, his expression thoughtful. "I’d be happy to return for future projects," he said. "Your barony is growing, and I can see that you have big plans. When you’re ready to start the next phase, send for me."
Darion nodded, his mind already turning to the future. The knights barracks were in need of repair, as were the outer walls and several other buildings. There was always more work to be done, always more to build.
"Thank you," he said. "I’ll keep that in mind."
Reconstruction was not fully finished though. Work still needed to be done in some places. The main structure was solid, the walls were standing, and the roofs were sealed, but there were still small details that required attention.
A crack here, a loose stone there, a section of plaster that needed to be smoothed over.
Nothing major, nothing that would delay the overall completion, but enough to keep the workers busy a little longer.
What remained now was finishing touches. The kind of work that didn’t require heavy lifting or complex planning, but demanded patience and precision.
Sanding down rough edges, applying the final coat of plaster, ensuring that every surface was smooth and every joint was sealed. It was the difference between a building that was functional and a building that was finished. And Darion wanted finished.
———
After two weeks of Ghan working on this castle, he was finally done! Yes! Ghan was done renovating the castle and partially rebuilding it! The project that had consumed so much time, energy, and resources was finally complete.
The workers had packed up their tools, the scaffolding had been dismantled, and the last of the dust had settled. What remained was a castle that looked nothing like the crumbling ruin it had been just weeks ago.
It almost seemed impossible, don’t you think? I mean, you readers weren’t there during the time of yore to see how desolate and impossible to rebuild this place was.
It was literally a dead man zone, a place that had been written off by everyone who had ever laid eyes on it. The walls were crumbling, the roofs were leaking, and the floors were uneven.
The previous Barons had let it decay, had done nothing to maintain it, had allowed it to fall into disrepair. It was a place that had been abandoned by hope, a symbol of everything that had gone wrong in Percvale.
But you all witnessed the time when Darion first came here, how the place was. You saw the cracked walls, the sagging roofs, the overgrown courtyard.
You saw the despair in the eyes of the knights, the hopelessness in the faces of the servants. It was a place that had been forgotten by the world, a place where dreams went to die.
If you told Ralf and Nigel, who dropped Darion off that very soon (and by very soon I mean two months later) Darion would completely transform this castle to the cinematic masterpiece it is right now, they would agree it’s more possible for them to lift mountains with just one of their fingers, than for that to happen!
