Chapter 357: Chapter 12: Cosmic Star Body Refinement 2

The compression did more than make the energy dense.

The cosmic energy that filled the air of the dormitory was never truly pure. It carried stray elemental residue, the leftover traces of every cultivator who had ever breathed in the building, and the faint chaotic noise of a world drowning in raw power. Ordinary cultivators had to absorb all of that along with the useful portion and then spend years of their lives slowly cleaning the impurities out of their meridians.

The singularities did the cleaning for him.

Anything unstable, mismatched, or impure could not survive the crushing force at the center of each black hole. It was stripped away and swallowed past the event horizon, never to return. Only the purest core of the energy passed through the needle-thin point and came out the other side.

What reached Ash was cosmic energy refined to the highest possible quality. There was no residue to burn off. There were no impurities to purge later. Every thread arrived ready to be used the instant it touched his body. That meant none of his refinement was wasted on filtering. Every Star Cycle cut deeper than the last. The same amount of ambient energy that would have taken an ordinary cultivator a full week to digest was fully absorbed in minutes.

Then the true refinement began.

It moved in three clear beats that repeated again and again. Each complete set of three beats formed one Star Cycle.

The first beat was Collapse.

The dense energy pressed inward on the part of the body it had been sent to. The tissue compressed with it, all the way down to the cellular level. Weak, loosely bound material, dead cells, buried toxins, and the old residue of years of ordinary living were squeezed out of the gaps between cells and driven toward the surface. Most of it was pulled straight out through his pores by the black holes and swallowed past the event horizon. The little that escaped fell onto his skin as fine gray grit.

The second beat was Ignition.

At the peak of the compression, each cell lit up like a young star. Ash could feel them—billions of tiny fusion fires burning in a calm, even glow. They burned away the last flawed structures inside the cell, anything too fragile or too uneven to carry the new blueprint. Nothing wasted was kept.

The third beat was Nova.

The compression released all at once in a soft, rolling pulse that expanded outward through the entire section. The cells came out of it larger, denser, and evenly spaced. They settled into a faint crystalline lattice that glittered with a trace of starlight. Then the next cycle began, and the whole process repeated at a slightly deeper level.

The nine parts of his body did not refine in isolation.

That was what made the technique cosmic.

After every Nova, the pulse from each part was caught by the next, like planets gently pulling on one another in a stable orbit. The skin’s pulse fed the flesh. The flesh’s pulse fed the blood. The blood carried the refined energy down into the muscles, then the tendons, then the bones and marrow. From there it moved into the organs—heart and lungs first, then liver, kidneys, and digestive system—until the final pulse from the brain and spinal cord rolled all the way back around to the skin again.

The whole body became one closed, turning system.

Each full loop left every part slightly stronger than before. Each part’s progress pulled the others forward. The ranks of the Body Refining Realm were no longer a staircase he had to climb one step at a time. They had become a simple measure of how many Star Cycles each of the nine parts had completed, and all nine were climbing together.

Ash had braced himself for pain.

He had read enough novels to know that serious body tempering was supposed to be agony. Protagonists bit through leather straps. They screamed in the dark. They woke up days later with blood on their teeth.

There was no pain.

The Boundless Origin filtered every sensation through his soul before it reached his conscious mind. What arrived was something else entirely. It felt like the goddess’s hands from the awakening ceremony—only this time they were not massaging his soul. They were working on his entire body. They kneaded the stiffness out of every muscle. They smoothed every knot in every tendon. They untangled every vessel. They pressed the tension out of bones he had not even known were tense.

Every cycle felt better than the last.

Ash’s breathing slowed. A faint, helpless smile spread across his face, and he made no effort to stop it. The pleasure was deep and quiet, the kind that settled into the bones and made thinking about anything else difficult. He simply sat at the center of the spinning star diagram and let the technique do its work.

Three doors down the western corridor, a D-Rank student named Tessa had been sitting cross-legged on her bed since dawn, trying to begin her first proper circulation of the Seven Star Martial Cultivation Technique.

That morning the cosmic energy in her room had been thick and easy, the way it usually was after the day-cycle field activated.

Then, without warning, it stopped behaving.

The qi she had been gathering began to drain out of the room. It slid away from her hands and curled toward the wall, as if something on the other side were gently pulling on a string. She tried to hold onto it, pressing her palms together and drawing a deeper breath. The energy slipped between her fingers like water through a sieve.

Around her, the wall lamps dimmed one by one. The energy arrays in the ceiling gave a sad, stuttering hum, like a small animal that had been suddenly spooked.

Then the pressure came.

It did not feel like hostility. Tessa had stood in front of angry instructors before. She had once been glared at by a Rank 9 senior in a sparring hall. This was nothing like that. It was quiet and enormous and completely indifferent—the sensation of standing at the foot of a mountain and understanding that the mountain did not know she existed.

Someone was cultivating in this building, and the energy of the entire surrounding area seemed to obey that person’s will while ignoring everyone else’s entirely.

Her cultivation stopped.

She was not forced out of it. There was simply nothing left to cultivate with.

All along the corridor, doors began to slide open. Students stepped out into the hall in their sleeping clothes, pale and silent, not quite looking at each other. Someone in the next room had dropped to one knee without noticing. A boy at the far end of the hall was holding his hand out in front of him, staring at his own fingers as if they had stopped belonging to him.

Outside, the sky above the western wing had begun to move.

It was not a storm. It was a slow, enormous spiral of blue-white cosmic energy hanging over the dormitory roof like the funnel of a hurricane laid on its side. The spiral turned faster as more students looked up at it. Silver and violet threads ran through the swirling mass. Its tail curled downward through the roof tiles of one particular building and disappeared.

The students watched the swirl tighten and brighten. They felt the pull in their own chests, as though every breath they took was being quietly lent to someone else.

Nobody knew who it was.

A few guesses passed through the crowd in low whispers. Each guess sounded less convincing than the last. Some thought a senior had returned early. Others wondered if an instructor was testing a new technique. A few of the more nervous students simply stared at the spiral and said nothing at all.

Inside the room at the center of the phenomenon, Ash remained completely unaware of the disturbance he was causing.

The nine black holes continued to turn. The star diagram continued to spin. Collapse, Ignition, and Nova repeated in a steady, deepening rhythm. Gray grit continued to fall from his skin. The crystalline lattice inside his cells continued to form and strengthen.

His body was being rewritten from nine directions at once, and for the first time since the awakening, the foundation he was building felt worthy of the martial soul that lived inside him.

The Star Cycles continued.

And outside, the spiral of cosmic energy above the western dormitory grew brighter still.
