My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 515: Roger Rowan is Not the Only Victim
Chapter 515: Chapter 515: Roger Rowan is Not the Only Victim
After Theodore Hughes finished explaining his plan, he turned his gaze to a man sitting in the corner.
The man wore a baseball cap and an inconspicuous casual outfit. After hearing what Theodore Hughes said, he nodded and said, "It’s all ready. We just need that idiot to sign later. The clauses in there lay out everything clearly!"
The man who spoke looked up, and only then did Zoe Sawyer realize it was Cameron, the one who had brought people to collect the debt.
’So these two have been in cahoots for a while now. Their target is the Rowan family’s house.’
Zoe Sawyer looked at the other men, thinking all seven of them had worked together to set up Roger Rowan.
But in the next second, Cameron’s actions made her dismiss that thought. "I brought yours, too," he said. "But don’t all go at once. Stagger it, or it’ll be too obvious."
As he spoke, Cameron distributed the contracts he was holding to the several men around him.
Zoe manipulated the door to get a look at the contracts in everyone’s hands. They were more or less the same as the one Theodore Hughes had, just with a few words changed here and there.
One of the men briefly flipped through the document in his hands. After confirming there were no mistakes, he set it down beside him, raised his glass to the group, and said, "I’ll be next, then. That old man won’t last much longer. Besides him, there’s no one to take care of his simpleton son. What the old geezer leaves behind will be perfect for me."
After the rest finished looking, they all chimed in, establishing an order.
Theodore Hughes downed the wine in his glass in one gulp and said with a grin, "Thanks for giving me the first shot, brothers. Your little bro here will test the waters for you all. If anything’s not right, we can make adjustments in time."
The remaining men also chuckled, chiming in one after another.
The man sitting next to Cameron threw an arm around his shoulders and said, "Next time you have a sweet deal like this, remember us, your brothers. We won’t short you a single cent of what you’re owed!"
Cameron clinked glasses with him, his tone casual. "Don’t worry. My boss has plenty of files like this. Once we’re done harvesting the ’leeks’ in this area, we’ll move on to the next patch."
There are always more leeks.
You harvest one crop, and another one grows right back.
As for these partners, if they perform well, there’s no problem working together again in the future.
After all, experienced partners are more reliable than new ones.
"Of course, of course. Besides that, we won’t forget your fee for all the trouble, brother." The six men, including Theodore Hughes, chimed in one after another, each raising a glass to toast Cameron.
Except for Roger Rowan, who was drooling while staring at the food in front of him, the other seven men seemed to be having a grand old time.
Passersby just assumed it was a gathering of friends and didn’t pay them any mind after a quick glance.
After the pleasantries were over, Theodore Hughes finally turned his attention to Roger Rowan beside him.
Worried that he might have remembered what they had just said, Theodore Hughes asked cautiously, "Roger, do you remember what we were just talking about?"
Roger looked up, a little confused, and stared at Theodore Hughes. "Talking about what? I want to eat."
Seeing his clueless, innocent expression, Theodore Hughes was overjoyed. ’The idiot didn’t hear a thing,’ he thought. ’All he can see is the food!’
’I don’t have to worry about him ratting on us when he gets back!’
"It’s nothing, it’s nothing! If you want to eat, then eat! Eat as much as you want!" Theodore Hughes said, eagerly piling all sorts of food onto Roger Rowan’s plate.
Roger didn’t think twice, eating whatever Theodore Hughes put on his plate.
The other men ate and watched, occasionally adding some food to Roger’s plate or pouring him a drink.
Throughout the entire process, Roger was so focused on eating he barely looked up.
Halfway through the meal, Theodore Hughes placed the document he had received earlier next to Roger, his voice gentle. "Roger, I have a piece of paper here. How about you sign your name on it for me?
"After you sign, I’ll buy you some other tasty treats."
Roger looked up at Theodore Hughes, a little bewildered. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and said, "Tasty treats?"
"That’s right. Just write your name here, and I’ll buy you tasty treats after we finish eating." Theodore Hughes nodded eagerly, handing him a pen and pointing to the signature area.
Roger didn’t understand why he had to sign something in the middle of a perfectly good meal, but thinking of the man’s promise, he still scrawled his name on it.
Immediately after, Theodore Hughes used the same method to get Roger to press his fingerprint on the document.
Once everything was settled, Cameron took the contract and glanced at it before nodding at Theodore Hughes. "No problems. A third of the money will be in your account tonight.
"But once you get the money, you’d better lie low for a while. Don’t spend it around here."
Everyone in this neighborhood knows everyone else’s business.
You were just as poor as everyone else before, and then suddenly you’re rich, spending money like water. People are bound to get suspicious.
Then, just three months later, a family mysteriously sells their house and ends up with a massive debt.
That’s basically telling everyone around that the unfortunate family’s situation has something to do with you.
So, getting out of town to lie low is the smartest move.
Theodore Hughes waved his hand dismissively, his tone nonchalant. "Don’t worry, I get it. I’ll pack my bags tonight. Just give me a heads-up when the next person is ready to make their move, and I’ll rush back."
Once he was sure everyone understood what to do next, Cameron finally relaxed and started to enjoy his dinner.
Everyone had a smile on their face, and the atmosphere was light, as if they could all see a bright future ahead.
But tonight’s mark, Roger Rowan, was oblivious to the undercurrents, still happily devouring the food in front of him, even feeling grateful to Theodore Hughes for taking him out to eat.
After eating and drinking their fill, and having successfully tricked Roger Rowan into signing the contract, Theodore Hughes and the others didn’t want to waste any more time on him.
After a brief discussion, they decided that Theodore Hughes would take him home first to keep up appearances, and then they would continue their night out.
Seeing this, Zoe Sawyer knew the time for this review was almost up. She memorized their table’s location, the faces of the other five men, and the name of the restaurant.
Sure enough, the review ended after Theodore Hughes paid the bill.
"How did it go? Find anything this time?" Heath Hale asked eagerly as soon as he saw Zoe Sawyer close the door.
The police chief beside him also looked on with concern.
A case like this had occurred in his jurisdiction, and his failure to discover it sooner was already a dereliction of duty.
Now, the only way to make amends was to catch all the participants and bring justice to the victim.
That was why the chief was so concerned about what Zoe Sawyer had just seen inside the door.
"Roger Rowan isn’t the only victim. Based on what I just saw, there are five more culprits who haven’t been caught!"
