My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 51: To Rescue the Abducted Children
Chapter 51: Chapter 51: To Rescue the Abducted Children
Zoe Sawyer had a puzzled look on her face, but she didn’t slow down, quickly following Heath Hale to another office.
Sean Hughes was worried, so he followed them.
Inside the office, a middle-aged woman paced back and forth, her eyes darting to the door while she nervously patted something in her pocket.
Elder Crowe, who was sitting opposite her, noticed these reflexive movements and slowly ran his fingers along the rim of his cup.
Just as the three of them reached the doorway, a middle-aged woman suddenly lunged toward them.
She grabbed Sean Hughes’s arm in a death grip. "Zoe Sawyer? You’re Zoe Sawyer, right?! Go save my child! They said they’ll send our children back if you just go to them!"
Evan Keller stepped forward, separated the woman from Sean Hughes, then stared at her and asked, "Who told you this? Why didn’t you tell us everything when you first filed the report?"
The middle-aged woman struggled for a moment but couldn’t get past Evan Keller. Realizing this wasn’t the place to cause a scene, she gradually stopped.
Elder Crowe tapped his index finger on the table a few times. After drawing everyone’s attention, he said, "Ma’am, we understand you’re worried about your child. We are also actively searching for the biker gang and the children.
But you need to understand that the situation is critical. You have to tell us everything you know so we can piece together the clues and rescue the children as quickly as possible.
Like right now, you clearly have a clue that you’re hiding from us. Are you trying to stall for time? Or do you have some other motive?"
As Elder Crowe spoke, he stared into the woman’s eyes without looking away.
The chief, Evan Keller, and the others didn’t interrupt, allowing the tense atmosphere to fill the office.
After a short while, the woman couldn’t hold his gaze and looked away, flustered. She bit her lower lip and then let go.
"It’s not much of a clue, just a phone number. After that damn human trafficker snatched my child, a woman who looked about my age came over and stuffed a piece of paper into my hand.
When I called it, someone on the other end told me to come to this police station, find a female officer named Zoe Sawyer, and bring her to a designated location. If I didn’t, they’d kill my child first..." The woman’s lips trembled nonstop as she spoke.
After finally managing to get the words out, she couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. They streamed from her eyes, and no matter how she wiped, they wouldn’t stop.
The chief sighed, walked over, and helped her into a chair.
"Don’t worry, we will definitely rescue the children. You have to trust us." The chief offered a few words of comfort, repeatedly assuring her they would rescue them as quickly as possible.
Then he had someone take her to another office to rest.
"Zoe Sawyer," the chief began with a sigh, looking at her standing behind Heath Hale, "I hate to ask this of you, but could you help us rescue the children first?"
If he could avoid it, he wouldn’t want to pressure Zoe Sawyer like this. After all, he had seen for himself how hard she had been working these past two days.
But lives were at stake, and the children’s safety was paramount.
If anything else happened to the children, the entire department’s public trust would plummet.
At that moment, everyone in the office had their attention fixed on Zoe Sawyer.
"I’m fine. I got a few hours of sleep just now, so I’m feeling pretty energetic." Zoe Sawyer patted her chest to show she was ready.
The chief let out a sigh of relief at her answer and quickly said, "This just happened. With so many children, it’s hard for them to move. The culprits can’t have gone far.
If you use your ability to go there now, we can catch them by surprise and rescue the children as fast as possible."
"I’ll go gather the officers from my team and Sean Hughes’s." Evan Keller didn’t waste any time and hurried out.
A rescue mission required them to be fully armed. If something went wrong, they could respond immediately.
Heath Hale wasn’t idle either; he quickly pulled up the files on the kidnapped children.
"See if you can control it. Open the door outside their hideout, where they’re keeping the kids. That’ll make it easier to clear any threats and avoid getting surrounded." Before Evan Keller returned with his team, Heath Hale pulled Zoe Sawyer aside to give her a few quick instructions.
Drawing on their experience from the previous missions, the group was ready in no time.
Zoe Sawyer repeated the procedure, silently chanting one of the children’s names in her mind. When the time was right, she pulled the door open.
This time, following Heath Hale’s instructions, she opened the door to a location five hundred meters from the hideout.
The group skillfully checked the surroundings. Once they confirmed no one had seen them, they moved out in an organized and disciplined fashion.
Just as Zoe Sawyer was about to follow, Sean Hughes stopped her. "You wait here for us. If there’s any danger, we’ll have an immediate way to retreat."
Seeing the disapproving looks from the others, Zoe Sawyer had no choice but to stay put.
Heath Hale kept busy, piloting a remote-controlled car to scout the area and watch for anyone trying to sneak up on them.
The area was very remote. There were hardly any residents around, and large tracts of farmland lay neglected, with only a few things planted sporadically. In the middle of the fields stood a single, one-story house.
Following the direction Zoe Sawyer indicated, Evan Keller led his men and snuck over.
As they neared the yard of the house, they heard waves of crying and wailing from inside, interspersed with a few childish curses.
"I want my mommy! Let me go back!"
"Bad guys! You’re all bad guys!"
Immediately after, Evan Keller and the others heard a sharp sound like a whip cracking through the air.
"Shut up! If you don’t shut up, this whip won’t be hitting the cage—it’ll be hitting you! Once you’re cut open and bleeding, I’ll toss you to the dogs!
Lao San, bring out those Tibetan Mastiffs from the backyard! They love kids with soft, tender skin like this!" a vicious male voice rang out.
An officer on Evan Keller’s team looked around, gave Evan a signal, and then climbed a large nearby tree.
Soon, he had a full view of the entire yard.
The yard wasn’t very big. In the far corner was a large iron cage, and inside it were all the children who had just been abducted.
The children were huddled together, their faces filled with terror. Outside the cage, several large, muscular Tibetan Mastiffs were baring their teeth at them.
The officer was certain he could see shreds of bloody meat on the dogs’ teeth.
A man stood with his back to the yard gate, a whip in his hand.
After making sure he hadn’t missed anything, the officer climbed down from the tree. The unavoidable noise he made caught the attention of the Tibetan Mastiffs.
They all started barking furiously in the direction of the gate.
"What’s going on? Lao San, take the dogs and go check it out!"
