My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 390: Dearest Aunt, I’ve Come to Repay Your Kindness
Chapter 390: Chapter 390: Dearest Aunt, I’ve Come to Repay Your Kindness
As he spoke, Evan Crowe’s eyes held a hint of probing mockery.
Zoe Sawyer stuck to her role, forcing herself to stay calm as she swallowed. "Someone died. Isn’t it normal to call the police? Why would you say I have a problem with your actions?"
Just as Evan was about to say more, Clark Crowe, who was standing nearby, stopped him. "We’ve already run a background check. Don’t go too far."
Clark’s message was clear. They had investigated Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale before coming over and found nothing suspicious. He was warning Evan Crowe to watch himself.
"Alright, alright. You’re the groom today, so I’ll give you this one."
"But if I hear them spouting any more nonsense, whether or not they’ll be able to leave will be another story." Evan Crowe shrugged and drew his thumb across his throat while looking at Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale, his threat perfectly clear.
Once he was done, he motioned for his parents to leave with him.
The ceremony couldn’t be held today anyway, so there was no point in them sticking around.
Aunt Crowe shot Mrs. Crowe a vicious glare. She looked like she was about to say something, but when she caught sight of Zoe and the others standing nearby, she resentfully shut her mouth, stomped her foot in frustration, and left.
"How lovely, Wendy Dawson. See? The Crowe family you’re marrying into is a real piece of work. You should really think about your future."
"Or perhaps you’d like to know what really happened to you last night?" Mrs. Crowe’s smile was unnervingly radiant; she didn’t look at all like a woman whose husband and son had just died.
Clark Crowe saw Evan’s gesture but pretended not to, averting his gaze. ’One warning was enough. Saying more might piss Evan off and interfere with my plans. That wouldn’t be good.’
After hearing what Mrs. Crowe said, Clark fixed her with a deathly stare, his tone threatening. "Aunt, you need to be very clear about what can and cannot be said."
"You know, I haven’t seen Aaron’s uncle yet this year. How about I invite him out for dinner sometime?"
Hearing Clark’s words, Mrs. Crowe let out a cold snort. She didn’t say anything else, simply turning and returning to her room.
’I have other plans for tonight; I can’t afford to waste my time here.’
Once she was out of sight, Clark turned to Wendy Dawson. He reached out, intending to pull her from Zoe Sawyer’s arms.
"Zoe, I want to stay with you. They... I’m scared." But Wendy’s nerves were already shot from the recent events. Seeing Clark’s outstretched hand, she instinctively shrank deeper into Zoe’s arms, her voice a terrified whisper.
"I’ll protect you. Don’t worry," Zoe whispered, hugging Wendy’s shoulders.
Seeing his hand come back empty and his wife nestled in someone else’s arms, Clark ground his foot in frustration.
’No, I can’t drag this out any longer. I have to end this quickly. Once I’ve dealt with all these people, I’ll have all the time in the world to comfort Wendy.’
’We’ll go back to the sweet life we had before.’
"Wendy, wait for me! I’ll take care of everything as fast as I can!" Clark paced anxiously for a moment, then gave Wendy one last, deep look before striding up the stairs.
Zoe and Heath quickly escorted her back to their room.
The moment they were inside, Wendy frantically grabbed Zoe’s sleeve. "I want to go home, Zoe. I don’t want to stay here anymore. Please, take me home."
’Two people had died in less than a day, and one of the killers was right there in front of her.’
’But Clark and the others had no intention of calling the police! They were just trading threats.’
Wendy had a terrible feeling that it wouldn’t stop at just two deaths. There were bound to be more "accidents."
If she weren’t in a foreign place where she didn’t know anyone or speak the language, Wendy would have already made a run for it.
She was incredibly thankful she had told Zoe beforehand. If she were here all by herself, Wendy couldn’t even imagine what state she would be in.
Zoe sighed inwardly at the sight of her friend’s terrified expression and the dark circles under her eyes. She pulled Wendy into her arms, patting her shoulder gently. "Don’t worry," she soothed. "We’re here. We’ll protect you."
"You didn’t sleep well last night, did you? Why don’t you get some rest here? We’ll watch over you."
Wendy was still anxious, but then Zoe sat down on the edge of the bed and took her hand.
Feeling the sense of security from her friend, Wendy slowly closed her eyes. The exhaustion from her sleepless night surged, and her eyelids grew heavy.
Soon, Wendy’s breathing became deep and even.
"You should get some rest, too," Heath said, his fingers already typing on his phone.
’Go to the bathroom. Let’s communicate by phone to avoid being overheard.’
They had already swept the room and confirmed it was free of any listening or surveillance devices, but they couldn’t be so sure about Wendy herself.
’The way Clark was acting, who knew? He might have planted a bug on Wendy.’
’Just in case, it was better to be cautious.’
Zoe immediately understood what Heath was doing. She carefully withdrew her hand and said, "I’ll stay here with Wendy. You go get some sleep on the sofa."
Then she quickly typed a reply on her phone and showed it to him.
"Never mind. I’ll just go over and play on my phone. Yell if you need anything," Heath said with a shake of his head.
The two of them used their phones to briefly discuss their plan, then fell silent.
Elsewhere, Clark was listening to the feed coming from Wendy’s location. When he confirmed that he couldn’t hear Zoe saying anything to turn his wife against him, his tight grip on his dagger relaxed slightly.
’Those two are still useful. I can’t just kill them. Otherwise, who’s going to help me comfort Wendy over the next few days?’
’The priority right now is to return the Crowe family to its purest state.’
’My so-called ’family’ has been completely corrupted by money. For a peaceful future, it’s best to just send them all to meet their maker.’
As Clark thought this, he slowly rose from his chair, his gaze shifting toward Aunt Crowe’s room.
’In that case, I might as well start with my dear aunt, the one who’s always holding that so-called ’life debt’ over my head.’
’I already took care of one yesterday, anyway. What’s one more?’
But before that, there was one more thing he had to do.
Clark pulled a thick iron chain out from under his bed, stroking it with a tremor of excitement.
’This was originally for imprisoning Wendy in the room, to stop her from interfering with my plans.’
’Now it’ll be perfect for the three of them.’
’Once I’ve dealt with everyone else, then I’ll let Wendy out.’
Clark wasn’t just one for thinking; his execution was swift.
Less than five minutes after retrieving the chain, he was at the door to Zoe and Heath’s room, wrapping it securely around the handles and locking it tight.
Once he was certain they couldn’t get out, Clark pulled out his dagger and headed upstairs with a light spring in his step.
"My dearest aunt, I’ve come to repay your kindness..."
