Chapter 383: Chapter 383: Something Will Happen Tonight

However, the situation was still unclear, so Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale could only bide their time and wait to see how things developed.

Because they had told Clark Crowe they were a couple, the Crowe family had arranged a single room for them.

After entering the room, Heath Hale checked it from top to bottom. Only after confirming there were no issues did he feel safe enough to speak.

"There’s no signal." Zoe Sawyer took out her phone. It had the local SIM card they’d prepared in advance, but it still showed no service.

Anyone else might have panicked a little, but Zoe had her ’door,’ so she wasn’t too concerned.

The two quickly reported their safety and progress to Evan Keller and the others. Once they confirmed that the police department didn’t need them for anything, they closed the door.

Before closing the door, however, Zoe and Heath had asked Officer Lee to help them look into the manor’s background.

"What’s our next move?" Zoe asked, looking at Heath, who was sitting in a chair.

Heath pointed toward the hallway outside. "We’ll watch first. This group won’t stay quiet for long. Something’s bound to happen soon.

Let’s rest for now and conserve our energy. That way, if something unexpected really does happen later, we’ll be able to react in time."

Zoe thought about it and agreed. She went along with Heath’s suggestion, leaning back to close her eyes and rest for a bit.

But it felt like she had barely dozed off when a series of urgent knocks sounded at the door.

Zoe and Heath opened their eyes in unison, their gazes fixed on the door.

"Wendy?" Zoe called out tentatively. Here, besides Wendy Dawson, there shouldn’t be anyone else who would come looking for her.

Hearing Zoe’s voice, the knocking paused for a moment. Then, Wendy Dawson’s frantic voice rang out from outside, "Zoe, it’s me! Help me!"

Hearing those two words, Zoe and Heath couldn’t sit still. They shot to their feet and strode over.

Heath yanked the door open to find Wendy Dawson standing at their doorway wrapped in a bathrobe, a panicked expression on her face.

When the door opened, a flash of relief crossed Wendy’s face. Ignoring Heath standing in front of her, she pushed him aside, rushed forward, and threw herself into Zoe’s arms, bursting into tears.

Zoe was just about to speak when she saw Heath quickly and discreetly make a hand signal indicating someone was nearby. The words on the tip of her tongue changed. "What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well? Or did you and Clark have a fight?

A bride isn’t supposed to cry, you know. It’s bad for your luck, isn’t it?"

As she spoke, she used Wendy’s body as cover to poke her in the waist, giving her a subtle warning.

Wendy had been about to say something else, but after hearing Zoe’s words and feeling the poke at her waist, she immediately understood.

’Clark is following me!

He’s watching me!’

Wendy gasped. However, she didn’t drop the ball. Instead, she said, "It’s Clark’s aunt! She looks down on me!

I was taking a shower in my room just now, and she suddenly barged in! She started saying all this weird stuff about some purification ritual and some secret, and even said it was my honor.

The rest of the Crowes were just watching from the doorway, and Clark’s aunt was about to rip my clothes off! Zoe, please take me home! They don’t treat me like a human being at all!"

Wendy’s voice was very soft when she mentioned the purification ritual, so only Zoe, who was holding her, heard it clearly.

To anyone else, it would just look like Wendy felt she had suffered a great insult and was so upset she could barely speak, now seeking out her friend to cry to.

Zoe’s heart sank. ’So this purification ritual is the real reason Clark brought Wendy here!’

"I just overheard them. They’re planning to drug you guys tonight. I think it’s so they can take me to this purification ritual.

You guys need to be careful. And if you can... please come save me." Looking utterly heartbroken, Wendy buried her face in Zoe’s neck and rapidly whispered everything she had overheard.

Zoe was only here because she had asked for help, so Wendy felt it was her duty to share information with them.

"I understand. Don’t worry, we won’t let anything happen to you." Out of the corner of her eye, Zoe saw two people walking quickly toward them. She patted Wendy’s shoulder reassuringly as she comforted her.

Sure enough, just as Zoe finished speaking, Aunt Crowe and First Uncle Crowe arrived at the doorway.

Aunt Crowe looked at Wendy being comforted in Zoe’s arms, a stiff smile playing on her lips. "Wendy, dear, your aunt was in the wrong just now. But this is a family tradition. Clark’s mother, your First Aunt-in-law, they all went through it.

Don’t worry, it’s not dangerous at all. Hurry back with us and get ready. We can’t miss the auspicious time."

Zoe noticed that as she spoke, Aunt Crowe’s eyes scanned Wendy from head to toe, finally landing on the hand with her wedding ring. An almost imperceptible flash of jealousy crossed her eyes.

’Jealousy?

What is she jealous of?’

The question spun through Zoe’s mind, but she didn’t let it show on her face.

Clark also squeezed through between the two elders at just the right moment. He took Wendy from Zoe’s arms and comforted her in a soft voice, "My aunt and uncle didn’t mean it. Don’t take it to heart.

The ceremony is tomorrow. Don’t cry. How can you be the most beautiful bride with swollen eyes?"

Clark’s voice was gentle, and his eyes were filled with love.

Anyone who saw this scene would have a hard time saying he didn’t love Wendy Dawson.

But Zoe still felt that something was off. With so little information, however, she couldn’t figure it out for the time being.

Wendy also understood that she wasn’t in her home country anymore. If she made too much of a scene and something "accidentally" happened to her, there would be truly no one to help her.

Even with two police officers secretly watching over her, she still had to be careful.

Having figured this out, Wendy wiped her tears and gave Clark a coquettish glare, acting as if she hadn’t discovered anything.

After coaxing her for a few more moments and making sure everything was fine, Clark put his arm around Wendy, nodded to Zoe and Heath, and went upstairs to their room.

"Hmph, that little hussy. You’re in for it tonight!" Aunt Crowe muttered under her breath, her expression dark as she stared at Clark and Wendy’s retreating backs.

First Uncle Crowe, standing beside her, was much more cautious. He tapped his sister on the shoulder, reminding her with a look that two strangers were nearby and that she should tone it down.

Aunt Crowe pulled her gaze back and turned to stare at Zoe and Heath. Then, with a contemptuous glance at the pair, she left.

’Tch, just a couple of paupers. Nothing to worry about.’

Only after they had all left did Zoe close the door, pull Heath back to the sofa, and say,

"Something’s going to happen tonight!"
