My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 322: Paul Logan
Chapter 322: Chapter 322: Paul Logan
"Those three look like the suspects from the case we just took over. Come see what’s going on," Sean Hughes said, pointing at Iris Logan and the two others who were being led into separate interrogation rooms.
He also handed the case file to Evan Keller. ’Since you’re interrogating them anyway, might as well ask them about this too!’
’So there’s that, too?’
Evan Keller raised an eyebrow in surprise, but he still took the file from Sean Hughes.
The grave-robbing case wasn’t complex and the file was thin, so Evan Keller finished reading through the few pages quickly.
"I never thought they’d be connected to this," Evan Keller marveled, though he was also a little confused.
’They’re dealers themselves, so why would they risk robbing a grave?’
"We were just about to head out and arrest them, but then we saw them right outside the office," Sean Hughes said with a shrug. "I don’t get it either."
’But since they’re already here, might as well let Evan Keller handle everything. No point in involving two different people.’
Evan Keller didn’t say much. He just waved the file in his hand to show he understood and then led his team inside.
The target they chose this time was Paul Logan, the young man who had made the delivery to Hannah Thompson.
"Paul Logan, you know why we brought you in, don’t you?" Evan Keller walked to the table and tossed the file onto it. He then stared intently at the man, who sat in the interrogation chair with his head bowed.
Paul Logan looked up, glanced at Evan Keller, and then immediately lowered his head again.
His posture screamed non-cooperation.
But Evan Keller noticed that while Paul Logan was putting on a defiant front, his legs were trembling.
’All bark and no bite. His psychological defenses are weak. He’ll be easy to break.’
Evan Keller made his assessment in a single glance.
"I... I don’t know." Paul Logan’s voice trembled, but he forced himself to raise his head and look Evan Keller straight in the eye.
The statement would have been more convincing if his legs weren’t shaking uncontrollably.
"Drug trafficking. Knowingly harboring criminals and participating in their activities. Robbing a grave and burning a corpse.
Take a guess. With all three of those combined, how long of a sentence do you think you’ll get? Maybe you won’t have to worry about your debts anymore. After all, when they tally up all your crimes, the most severe punishment... is the death penalty." Evan Keller didn’t beat around the bush, staring at Paul Logan as he listed off his crimes one by one.
"Especially that first one. If the amount is confirmed to be over the legal limit, that’s a death sentence right there."
Paul Logan’s pupils dilated, his eyes wide with terror.
’How could this cop know I robbed a grave?’
’I checked the area when I did it! There were no witnesses and no cameras!’
The expression on Paul Logan’s face was so obvious that everyone could see his guilty conscience.
"What? Surprised we know? The police have more methods than you can possibly imagine." Evan Keller scoffed, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed and fixing his gaze on Paul Logan. "I’m asking you now to give you a chance.
You don’t have to talk. But when I go interrogate the other two, their story becomes the official record.
Who knows? You might just end up being the fall guy for everything."
The color drained from Paul Logan’s already grim face as Evan Keller spoke, until he finally lowered his head in defeat.
Evan Keller wasn’t in a rush. He simply sat in his chair, watching Paul Logan.
’He’ll talk,’ Evan thought. ’No one wants to be the fall guy.’
Evan Keller was confident of this.
Sure enough, a few minutes later, Paul Logan began to speak. "I was just a factory worker. I didn’t make much, but it was enough to get by.
Then last year, someone got me to gamble. I got hooked, lost all my money, and even ended up deep in debt to loan sharks."
Paul Logan’s voice was quiet, but the interrogation room was silent. Everyone waited for him to continue.
As Paul Logan spoke, the story of an ordinary young man being dragged into the abyss after a single lapse in judgment unfolded before them.
At first, Paul Logan knew it was just something to dabble in, not to get deeply involved.
But in the beginning, perhaps it was beginner’s luck, every bet he placed brought in a return.
Gradually, Paul Logan became addicted to the thrill of making easy money and could no longer stomach his factory job.
To have more time to gamble, Paul Logan quit his job and holed up in his rented apartment, constantly placing bets on his phone.
As time went on, his "winning nine out of ten times" slowly turned into "losing nine out of ten times."
All the money he had won before went back in, but it was nowhere near enough.
Paul Logan started taking out loans. He borrowed from every lending app he could find, and went back to the loan sharks, always thinking he could win it all back with the next bet.
But things didn’t go as planned, and he was cleaned out once again.
By the time he came to his senses, his payments on the lending apps were overdue, and the interest on the loans from the sharks had compounded into a figure he could never hope to repay in his lifetime.
Staring at the numbers, his heart filled with despair, Paul Logan decided to end it all. But just then, he ran into Iris Logan, a girl from his village.
Iris Logan learned of Paul’s predicament and assured him, patting her chest, that she had a way for him to pay off all his debts.
But the work was dangerous, she said, and asked if he had the nerve to do it.
’If I’m brave enough to kill myself,’ he thought, ’what’s there to be afraid of?’
Paul Logan accepted the offer without a second thought. It was only after working for some time that he discovered what he was actually delivering.
He considered going to the police, but the fee Iris Logan paid him for a single run was more than he could make in a year at the factory.
In the end, Paul Logan succumbed to the lure of the money offered by Iris Logan and her boyfriend, becoming the third member of their little group.
Iris Logan was in charge of finding and recruiting customers. Her boyfriend handled the sales and collected the money. And Paul Logan was just the delivery boy.
Everything was going smoothly, and Paul Logan was happy that he was close to paying off his debts.
He never expected that right when he was feeling pleased with himself, their whole three-person crew would get busted by the police.
After listening to Paul Logan’s confession, Evan Keller tapped his fingers on the table. "So, why rob a grave and burn the body? According to our information, the person buried there was from your village, correct?"
At this question, Paul Logan’s face went deathly pale. He took a long moment to compose himself before speaking again. "If you found out about that, then you must also know that we run a weight-loss service on the side, right?"
Evan Keller nodded. He had seen that mentioned in the file Sean Hughes gave him.
’But what does that have to do with this?’
Just thinking about what he had to say next made Paul Logan gag. He then continued.
"The pills sold by the weight-loss service... part of the ingredients... came from what we burned."
