Chapter 304: Chapter 304: Someone is Surveilling from Across the Police Station

Zoe Sawyer waved her hand, signaling for Captain Taylor not to make a big deal out of it.

His team had already made thorough preparations. Even without her, it would have just taken a bit more effort to successfully capture the suspects in the end.

As for saving Cap Wright, she had only given a warning. His own quick reflexes were what truly allowed him to dodge the danger.

It wasn’t that Zoe Sawyer was some kind of saint; she just felt that since she was drawing a salary for this, giving a warning was part of her job.

She didn’t want to see a colleague die in the line of duty. Besides, after this support mission was over and the case was closed, she would be getting a hefty bonus.

Although that was what Zoe Sawyer thought, Captain Taylor and his team saw it differently.

Seeing Zoe Sawyer’s reluctance to take credit, the smile in Captain Taylor’s eyes grew more pronounced. "Alright, I won’t forget this. I will be sure to detail the contributions you all made to this operation in my report."

After saying this, Captain Taylor paused, then added, "We’ll take it from here and handle all the wrap-up work. If you’re not in a hurry, feel free to look around. The scenery in our city is quite nice."

Zoe Sawyer didn’t refuse Captain Taylor’s kind offer, merely saying they would see what the others wanted to do.

Thinking about what she’d seen when they opened the door, Zoe Sawyer couldn’t suppress her curiosity. "Captain Taylor, what was on that USB drive Sean Vance had? Is that something you can talk about?"

"There’s no reason I can’t. The staff from the research institute tested it on a new, offline computer. As soon as they plugged the drive in, a hidden virus program automatically installed itself. It then attacked the computer’s native software and started deleting files."

"The criminal group’s goal was probably to use this virus to cause some trouble for the institute and divert their attention," Captain Taylor said, shaking his head as he explained the latest developments to Zoe Sawyer and the others.

This wasn’t classified information, so there was no reason it couldn’t be shared.

Zoe Sawyer nodded thoughtfully. ’So they didn’t just want to steal classified data, they also wanted to use this to attack the institute’s network and all its files!’

’If we hadn’t discovered it in time, the losses would have been catastrophic!’

They chatted for a few more moments before Captain Taylor, busy with work, hurried away.

After Captain Taylor left, Zoe Sawyer looked at Beau, who was sitting beside her, lost in the world of his drawing. She couldn’t help but praise him. "Beau, you were a huge help today! If you hadn’t noticed something was wrong when you did, we might have let the other two suspects get away."

When he first started watching the surveillance footage, Beau’s attention was focused on Sean Vance and Gavin Keller, so he hadn’t noticed the anomaly in the far corner.

This time, he had spotted a woman with suspicious movements hiding in the northwest corner of the feed. By combining that with the footage he’d reviewed earlier, Beau was able to make the connection instantly.

Otherwise, their initial plan would have definitely spooked the targets and let the real big fish get away.

The rest of the team gathered around, showering him with praise from all sides, telling him how amazing he was.

Beau rubbed his face, a little embarrassed, but upon hearing their praise, he proudly puffed out his chest, put his hands on his hips, and struck a pose as if to say, ’That’s right, I’m amazing.’

Soon, Evan Keller, Cap Wright, and the others returned, escorting the four suspects.

After all the handover procedures were completed, Zoe Sawyer’s group didn’t linger. They got back into the car Captain Taylor had arranged and returned to the provincial bureau.

As the car turned into an alley, Heath Hale’s and Monkey’s sharp eyes noticed that in a house beside the alley, the curtain of one room’s window was pulled back slightly. An eye was staring intently at their vehicle.

To avoid alerting the observer, the two of them instinctively looked away, pretending they hadn’t seen anything.

Heath Hale and Monkey felt they could still distinguish the feeling of casual curiosity from that of targeted surveillance.

Zoe Sawyer sensed it too. Her expression unchanging, she feigned a casual glance to the side and also noticed the eye behind the window.

Zoe Sawyer slightly raised her hand and traced two words on the back of Heath Hale’s hand: ’Someone’s there.’

Instead, Heath Hale reached out and squeezed Zoe Sawyer’s hand, signaling her not to panic and not to give them away.

Understanding the message Heath Hale was conveying, Zoe Sawyer took a deep breath and pretended she hadn’t noticed anything.

Only after the car had driven into the police station’s compound did the person who had been spying on them from behind the window finally lower the curtain, acting as if nothing had happened.

The man dropped the curtain and took out his phone.

The phone’s light was starkly visible in the dim room. The man’s fingers flew across the screen as he typed out a line of text, reporting what he had seen to the person on the other end.

After receiving a reply telling him to keep watching, the man put his phone away and flopped onto the bed behind him.

’No rush,’ he thought. ’I’ve been watching them for days and haven’t seen anything unusual anyway.’

Zoe Sawyer’s group returned to their office and first went to report the mission’s status to the Bureau Chief.

After they finished, Heath Hale spoke up again. "Chief, someone is watching us from across the street. Are you aware of this?"

Vivian Dunn looked at Heath Hale in surprise. ’Someone’s watching us?’

"You couldn’t see their position from where you were sitting, so it’s normal that you didn’t notice. The person watching was very discreet. If Monkey and I hadn’t undergone special training, it wouldn’t have been so easy to spot them," Heath Hale explained, seeing Vivian Dunn’s surprised expression.

Vivian Dunn nodded in sudden understanding.

"We noticed them the day they moved in. They’re not just at the front; there are eyes on the back gate too," the Bureau Chief nodded, filling Zoe Sawyer’s team in on what had been happening.

Because of Zoe Sawyer’s presence at the bureau, the police had always maintained tight control over the surrounding area.

When new faces appeared in the residential area, the Bureau Chief and his staff became extremely vigilant.

Eventually, they figured out their intentions—they were specifically staking out the police station, though it was unclear who had sent them.

"You all need to be careful coming and going during this time. Don’t use the ’door’ unless you absolutely have to. Let’s let them think they’re getting away with it for a while longer and see if we can catch the person pulling the strings."

"Especially you, Zoe Sawyer. Don’t go out unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve already notified your parents and told them to be careful as well," the Bureau Chief reiterated after explaining the situation.

There was a good chance this group was targeting Zoe; they absolutely could not let their guard down.

Zoe Sawyer and the others all nodded, showing they understood.

After explaining everything, the Bureau Chief waved his hand at the group, signaling for them to go back and get some rest.

Back in their office, Vivian Dunn’s tone was worried. "Are they targeting Zoe?"

Evan Keller sat at his desk, arms crossed, his expression serious. "Whether they are or not, everyone needs to be on high alert for the time being."

"But don’t tip them off!"
