My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 296: Specifically Requesting Zoe Sawyer and Beau for Support
Chapter 296: Chapter 296: Specifically Requesting Zoe Sawyer and Beau for Support
Sure enough, things went just as Evan Keller had predicted.
With Lynn Shawcross’s testimony, interrogating Gabriel Zelda became much easier.
At first, he was stubborn and refused to admit anything. But as Evan Keller revealed more details and presented a growing mountain of evidence, the nerve Gabriel Zelda had kept so taut finally snapped. He lowered his head, admitted to his actions, and confessed to everything.
And with that, the case was considered closed.
"So, this whole thing started because Gabriel Zelda couldn’t let go? Even after getting engaged to Lynn Shawcross and moving in with her, he was still muttering another woman’s name in his sleep?"
"Lynn Shawcross got jealous, paid a private investigator to dig up everything on Yvonne Wayne, and then orchestrated this whole mess? For Yvonne Wayne, this was a bolt from the blue!" Zoe Sawyer’s voice was laced with anger as she listened to Evan Keller’s explanation.
She was just trying to work hard and earn money for her sick child and boyfriend’s treatments, and then this had to happen.
Now she was injured herself and would certainly need time to recover.
For Yvonne Wayne, this was the worst possible news.
No work meant no income, and if she couldn’t keep up with the hospital bills, it would be a fatal blow for her child.
"Don’t worry," Heath Hale said reassuringly, sitting beside Zoe Sawyer. "The Shawcross and Zelda families are loaded. To minimize the damage to their business reputations, they’ll definitely pay a fortune to get Yvonne Wayne’s forgiveness. The settlement from both families is substantial, and it will be paid in a lump sum. Lynn Shawcross’s parents also promised to cover the medical expenses for Yvonne’s family of three until they’ve all completely recovered."
"And to get a letter of forgiveness from Yvonne, Old Man Thorne has promised to let her live in her current apartment rent-free for twenty years."
For Yvonne Wayne, this compensation was a lifeline.
"By the way, what about the victim’s parents?" Zoe Sawyer asked, remembering that part of the case.
The deceased had thought he was terminally ill with not much time left. That, combined with the money from Lynn Shawcross, was enough for him to agree to play along with their charade.
But then Lynn Shawcross and Gabriel Zelda got into an argument and accidentally revealed their true intentions.
To stop the man from exposing them, the pair decided to go all the way and murdered him for real.
"They’re a mess, but the settlement from the Shawcross and Zelda families should be similar to what Yvonne is getting," Sean Hughes said with a shrug, coming over to sit across from Zoe Sawyer.
Yvonne Wayne and the man who was killed were the most innocent parties in this case.
One had no clue why these people were targeting her, and the other just thought it was all an act.
"Alright, the case is closed, and that’s what matters. Let’s finish the cleanup and get the reports written," Evan Keller said, standing up to stretch. "I’m treating everyone to barbecue after work tonight." The words were barely out of his mouth when the phone on his desk suddenly rang.
Evan Keller had a strange sense of foreboding. He reached for the phone and answered. Sure enough, the Chief’s stern voice came through the receiver. "There’s a secret mission requesting support from Zoe Sawyer and Beau. Evan, I want you to take a few people and go with them."
"Remember, you must ensure their safety, and you all need to watch your own backs, too. Understand?" ℴ
"Understood. What’s the mission?" Evan Keller’s expression grew grim. The others, who had just been laughing and talking, fell silent and turned to look at him.
The Chief replied, "You’ll find out when you arrive. Someone will be at the station to pick you up in an hour. Be ready."
"Got it!" Evan Keller confirmed before hanging up.
When he looked up again, he saw that the entire office was staring at him.
Sean Hughes asked, "You look so grim. Is it a new case?"
"Yeah. A secret mission. They specifically requested support from Zoe Sawyer and Beau," Evan Keller said, rubbing his temples. "Besides those two, Heath Hale and I are going. We need to pick three more people to go with us."
’Barry Quinn and Monkey are Zoe’s bodyguards, so they have to come. Heath Hale has more experience with this kind of thing than I do, and we have great synergy, so he needs to be there too.’
’That means I just need to choose three more people.’
The moment he spoke, the entire office erupted. With only a few spots available, everyone eagerly volunteered.
In the end, they had to draw lots to decide who would go.
Hayden Shaw, Vivian Dunn, and a male officer named Joey.
The group quickly gathered their gear, boarded the special vehicle sent to pick them up, and left the station.
The rest of the team stayed behind, ready to provide backup in case Zoe Sawyer’s group needed support.
「Meanwhile, at the boss’s hideout...」
After learning that another mission had failed, the boss, her face an icy mask, slammed the object in her hand onto the floor.
"You’re all a bunch of worthless trash! Why did we fail again this time?!" The boss’s voice had lost all its earlier calm. Her eyes blazed with fury as she stared daggers at the man before her.
"According to our intel, Mr. Lynch was ill and committed suicide. To prevent his company’s stock price from plummeting, he had his younger brother dismember his body, place the parts in Florinwell, and use quicklime to dissolve them."
"The cops sensed something was off and made a house call under some pretext. They just happened to run into our operative arriving at the same time. He saw the cops, thought his cover was blown, and made a run for it. That made them suspicious, and they nabbed him." The man kept his head bowed, carefully relaying his findings to the boss.
The boss almost laughed in fury. "So you’re telling me it was all just a coincidence?"
"That our man was just unlucky, ran into the cops, and got himself caught?"
As she spoke, she swept everything from the nearby table onto the floor.
The man lowered his head guiltily. It was all the intel he had.
’Digging any deeper would have been too risky; those cops could have traced me.’
’I’m not an idiot. I’m not about to leave a trail for them to follow. Better to just fudge the report with a plausible excuse.’
’Besides, the boss wouldn’t actually kill me for an answer like this.’
Sure enough, things went just as he’d expected. After her outburst, the boss leaned back in her chair, panting as she struggled to regain her composure.
Looking at the timid man in front of her only made the boss more furious.
’Why am I surrounded by idiots!’
’Useless!’
’They all talk such a big game, but the second they cross paths with those cops, it’s like they lose their damn minds! They just line up to feed them kills, one after another!’
’I’ve lost almost all the good people I spent years training!’
Thinking of Evan Keller and his team, who had thwarted her operations time and again, the boss narrowed her eyes and sat up straight.
She then said to the man.
"You. Use every resource you have and put those cops under constant surveillance. Understand?"
"Don’t miss a single detail. Or you’re dead, too!"
