Chapter 294: Chapter 294: Interrogating Lynn Shawcross

Evan Keller stood up, then looked at Yvonne Wayne and said, "The police have a grasp of the situation now. I’ll arrange for someone to take you for a check-up to see if there are any internal injuries.

Then we’ll bring you back to the station. As for your boyfriend and child, we’ll send people over to see them as well."

Hearing Evan Keller’s plan, Yvonne Wayne let out a long sigh of relief and nodded at him gratefully.

Her biggest worry right now was her family in the hospital.

After he finished speaking, Evan Keller followed Officer Lee into the hallway. "Any new discoveries regarding the deceased?"

Officer Lee handed the file in his hand to Evan Keller and said, "According to our investigation, the deceased, Melody Miller, had a check-up at a private hospital three months ago. She was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer with no hope of recovery.

The autopsy results show that while the deceased did have cancer, it was in its early stages. With proper treatment, it was completely curable."

’So, the killer misled the deceased, making her think there was no hope of a cure, which made her willing to go all out and cooperate with their plan?’

"Check all the bank accounts under Melody Miller’s and her parents’ names. See if there have been any large deposits." Evan Keller quickly thought of another angle and promptly gave the order.

No sooner had he spoken than Officer Lee handed over another file. "Already checked. There’s a card under Melody Miller’s mother’s name that received several large transfers a month ago. Although the source account was heavily disguised, we still traced it.

The owner of the account is a distant relative of Lynn Shawcross. We called them to get more information. The person said they lent the account to Lynn Shawcross two years ago and knows absolutely nothing about what the account was used for afterward."

Now all the clues pointed to Lynn Shawcross.

"What about that private hospital? Have you found out anything?" Evan Keller continued to ask.

Officer Lee nodded. "We have. It’s owned by Lynn Shawcross’s uncle. Uncle Shawcross really dotes on his niece and basically agrees to any request she makes."

After discovering Melody Miller’s medical records at that hospital, Heath Hale had immediately sent people to investigate.

The officers sent over should have arrived by now.

"Alright, I get it. Liam, take a photo of Lynn Shawcross over to Leo for identification. See if she was the tenant who rented his family’s apartment before." Evan Keller assigned Officer Lee a new task while flipping through the documents in his hand. "Go now. I’ll wait here for news."

"Yes, sir!"

Officer Lee didn’t waste any time. He took the photo of Lynn Shawcross and walked briskly toward Leo.

In less than ten minutes, Officer Lee returned. He nodded at Evan Keller with a grave expression. "It’s her! I showed Lynn Shawcross’s photo to Leo. He said she’s the former tenant, and also the one who climbed onto Yvonne Wayne’s balcony the other day."

Leo said he remembered her very clearly.

Because from the moment she rented the apartment to when she moved out, Lynn Shawcross looked down her nose at everyone, with an expression that said ’you’re all a bunch of hicks, so stay the hell away from me.’

Plus, she rented the apartment but never lived in it. She’d occasionally bring one or two people over, and then they’d leave a short while later.

After her lease was up, she paid extra money for him to store those freezers.

So Leo had a very strong impression of this Lynn Shawcross; she was the type he’d recognize in an instant.

"Okay, I get it. Let’s go interrogate this Lynn Shawcross now." After getting enough evidence, Evan Keller had Hayden Shaw bring her in.

Once they were sitting face-to-face, Evan Keller got a much clearer sense of what Leo meant by Lynn Shawcross’s ’looking down her nose at people’ expression.

Lynn Shawcross reached out, smoothed her hair, and adjusted her clothes. Only after confirming that everything was in place did she turn her gaze to Evan Keller, who was sitting across from her.

"Hurry up. I have a party to get to tonight. Ask whatever you need to, and make it quick." Before Evan Keller could speak, Lynn Shawcross spoke first, the entitled tone in her voice making him laugh in exasperation.

’This is the first time I’ve met someone so brazenly defiant, even when they know they’ve done wrong!’

Seeing Lynn Shawcross act like this, Evan Keller, contrary to expectation, was no longer in a hurry. He copied her, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair. "Make it quick? Fine. Then let me ask you, why did you climb onto Yvonne Wayne’s balcony and stage a fake death with Melody Miller?

Also, why did you have your uncle forge Melody Miller’s medical report? And why did you transfer several large sums of money into her mother’s account?"

’Have these cops already figured it out to this extent?’ Lynn Shawcross’s heart skipped a beat.

’And how does this cop across from me know I was the one who climbed the balcony? I checked beforehand. There are no other cameras around here, besides my own phone!’

’He must be bluffing!’

’That’s right! That has to be it!’

’They don’t have any evidence, but they suspect me. This must be their only way to trick me into confessing!’

All the possibilities flashed through Lynn Shawcross’s mind. Finally, she spoke calmly, "Climbed a balcony? I don’t know what you’re talking about. You have no proof. For all I know, you’re just trying to pin this on me.

As for Melody Miller, a doctor under my uncle’s employ made a mistake with the diagnostic report. To protect the hospital’s reputation, we chose to settle it privately.

Those transfers were the compensation we paid her."

Her explanation was actually quite plausible. If Evan Keller’s team hadn’t uncovered all that information, he might have actually believed her.

"You want evidence, is that it? You probably don’t know this, but the landlord’s son is a voyeur. He installed a pinhole camera in Yvonne Wayne’s living room." Evan Keller stared into Lynn Shawcross’s eyes, watching her face suddenly turn pale, and said, word by word, "He witnessed the entire process: you climbing in, putting on your disguise, placing the phone, and the two of you working together.

Do I need to play the video for you?"

Lynn Shawcross’s face turned ugly, and her heart pounded. ’Is what this cop is saying true or false!’

’Could there really be a pinhole camera?’

’If it’s true, then everything I did was for nothing!’

’No, I can’t admit it.’

"I don’t know what you’re talking about." Lynn Shawcross bit her lower lip and continued to deny it. "Maybe it was just someone who looks a lot like me?"

"Wouldn’t that be a little too much of a coincidence? It just so happens that you rented an apartment here before, it just so happens that you left the freezers you bought here, and it just so happens that the freezers you left became the place where Melody Miller’s body was hidden." Evan Keller hammered her with one "just so happens" after another, making Lynn Shawcross shift restlessly in her seat.

Of course, she knew how far-fetched her own words sounded, but right now, she was gambling.

Seeing Lynn Shawcross’s stubbornly defiant expression, Evan Keller slammed his hand on the table.

"Are you taking me for a fool, or are you taking this entire police department for fools?!"
