Chapter 292: Chapter 292: 3 People Arrested

Evan Keller shot to his feet, telling Leo to stay put.

Then he rushed over.

Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale followed close behind.

When they arrived, Hayden Shaw was having his men hold down a man and a woman who were struggling violently. Their faces were pressed against the tile floor, and the cold sensation only made them more agitated.

"How dare you! Let me go! Let me go right now!"

"Do you know who my father is?! Hurry up and let me go!"

The woman being held down struggled frantically, spitting out one threat after another.

When she saw that Hayden Shaw and his team were ignoring her threats, humiliation turned to fury. An endless stream of profanities poured from her mouth.

Hayden Shaw and the others frowned as they listened to the incessant cursing, but the force of their grip didn’t lessen.

The man, also pinned to the floor, wasn’t so lucky. During the arrest, he not only resisted but also grabbed a fruit knife and stabbed one of the team members in the arm.

To prevent him from lashing out and hurting anyone else, Hayden Shaw had dislocated his arm and stuffed something in his mouth to keep him from any acts of self-harm.

But even so, the man’s expression remained vicious. He kept glancing over at Yvonne Wayne with a look of regret.

’If I’d known,’ he thought, ’I wouldn’t have held back. I would’ve had my fun!’

Yvonne Wayne, meanwhile, had been carefully seated in a nearby chair. Two female officers were gently treating her exposed wounds.

A long gash, scraped by a rock, ran down her arm. The flesh was torn open and dripping with blood; it looked excruciating.

"How are her injuries? Is anything serious?" Evan Keller asked, looking at Hayden Shaw who was standing nearby.

Hayden Shaw knew what Evan was asking. He shook his head and said, "They look like superficial wounds for now, but we saw her get kicked in the chest. We’ll need to get her to a hospital for a proper check-up to know for sure."

Evan Keller pursed his lips. As much as he wanted to solve the case quickly, he couldn’t ignore her physical condition. After a moment’s thought, he was just about to tell Hayden Shaw to take her for an examination.

Before he could speak, Yvonne Wayne’s voice cut him off. "I can manage!"

Yvonne Wayne stared at Evan Keller with a resolute expression, stating word by word, "I’m really okay. I can manage!"

"All right." Evan Keller sighed. "Help her over. Be careful not to make her injuries any worse." He then had the two female officers who had just treated Yvonne’s wounds help her to the interrogation room.

As for the man and woman on the floor, they were to be held separately to prevent them from colluding on their stories.

On the way to the interrogation room, Zoe Sawyer and the others quickly briefed Evan Keller on the relationship between the three individuals to help him with the upcoming questioning.

"Name?"

"Yvonne Wayne."

"Do you know why you were brought here?"

"I do. Someone died in my rented apartment. If I’m not mistaken, that makes me the prime suspect right now."

Yvonne Wayne answered the second question with an exceptionally calm voice, seemingly unsurprised at being a suspect.

Evan Keller looked up at Yvonne Wayne, who was sitting across from him, and asked, "You already knew?"

"I knew. From the first day I was captured, they kept repeating it in my ear." Yvonne Wayne’s expression turned pained, clearly recalling her ordeal over the past few days.

Evan Keller jotted down some key information in his notebook, then continued, "We looked at your past internet search history. You’ve never searched for anything about pet-sitting. Why the sudden decision to hire someone for in-home pet care this time?"

After identifying her as a person of interest, they had immediately pulled Yvonne Wayne’s bank card transaction records and found that she lived a very frugal life.

Every cent she earned, aside from what was needed for rent and her own living expenses, was transferred to a specific account.

Even if the amounts weren’t large, would a woman living so frugally really spend money on something like this?

Yvonne Wayne was silent for a long moment before finally speaking. "Actually, I hadn’t planned on hiring anyone at first. Mimi is lazy and easy to care for; I just needed to leave out enough food and water for her."

"The only reason I hired someone was because I won an in-home pet-sitting voucher in a pet group chat. The group admin paid for the service out of pocket and gave it to us as a perk."

"It was non-transferable, and it would have been a waste not to use it, so I redeemed it."

But she never expected things would turn out like this.

It wasn’t just Evan Keller; Zoe Sawyer and the others, who were observing from outside, all frowned. This case was clearly premeditated.

What kind of grudge, what kind of hatred, would drive these people to spend years plotting such vicious revenge against Yvonne Wayne?

Evan Keller took out a photo ID of the deceased and pushed it in front of Yvonne Wayne. "Do you recognize this person? When we investigated, she was lingering around your apartment building."

"Our subsequent investigation confirmed she’s connected to this case."

Evan Keller was being shrewd. He didn’t tell Yvonne Wayne that the person in the photo was the victim. He needed to find out exactly how much she knew.

Looking at the photo that had been pushed toward her, along with the attached information, Yvonne Wayne frowned. She stared at the face for a good while before shaking her head in confusion. "I don’t recall. I’ve never seen this person before."

Evan Keller stared intently at Yvonne Wayne. Seeing no sign of guilt in her eyes, he sat up a little straighter and said, "She is the deceased. The one who accepted your in-home pet-sitting request."

"Are you sure you don’t know her?"

"I’m sure. She wasn’t a classmate of mine, and she certainly wasn’t a colleague. I have no memory of this person at all." Yvonne Wayne’s voice was firm. She truly had never seen this person before.

Evan Keller collected the photo and documents and moved on to another question. "You aren’t on good terms with those two from earlier. Why did you suddenly end up with them?"

"Weren’t you the least bit wary when you saw them?"

This was what puzzled Evan Keller the most.

Would you really let your guard down completely when meeting two people you had a bad history with—classmates who might have even bullied you back in school?

Yvonne Wayne’s expression was pained. After hesitating for a long time under the watchful eyes of Evan Keller and the others, she finally revealed the real reason. "...Because they said they had a way for me to earn a lot of money in a short amount of time."

"My boyfriend and my child are both seriously ill and lying in the hospital right now. The daily expenses are enormous. I’ve tried every way I can think of to make money, but it’s still not enough to cover the costs."

"Now someone was telling me they had a way for me to earn enough for the medical bills. Even if it was a lie, I had to try."

"I’m just so desperate for money."
